Stories from the Lapidarium: legio IIII Flavia Felix in Dalmatia
The author discusses the fragment of a single-section funerary stele kept in the Lapidarium of the Archaeological Museum Zadar. Although it does not contain any special features – even its inscription is not fully preserved – a detail of the inscription reveals an interesting fact that can be seen as solid evidence that legio IIII Flavia Felix was actually a reconstituted legio IIII Macedonica that had occupied the vacated encampment on the River Krka. The known facts about the founding of IIII Flavia Felix Legion and its deployment in Dalmatia are also discussed. An overview of the inscriptions containing the legion’s members from Dalmatian soil is also provided
Do-It-Yourself Opinion-Poll Sampling Experiments
This article, created by Flavia R. Jolliffee of Brunel University, describes a sampling experiments based on opinion-poll type data as an alternative to coin-tossing experiments for social science students. Jolliffe includes interesting data sets within this basic lesson plan. It seems that the author is attempting to provide a more riveting experience for students, at least in comparison to a coin-tossing example. The author provides references for those looking for further information on this topic
Transposable elements and their KRAB/KAP1 controllers broadly regulate transcription in adult human cells
KAP1 is a universal corepressor for the large family of KRAB-ZFP proteins that coordinates epigenetic silencing of endogenous retroelements (EREs) during early embryonic development. This process is essential not just to prevent replication of EREs, but also to control their regulatory influence on host genes. Although in differentiated cells the control of EREs is believed to be mainly DNA methylation-dependent, emerging evidence suggests that KAP1-dependent, histone-based repression might remain a key regulator of ERE expression and its influence on cellular gene networks. Using a combination of transcriptional and histone modification profiling, we have investigated the impact of KAP1 epigenetic regulation on the transcriptional dynamics of human CD4+ T cells. We found that KAP1 binding on subsets of EREs is maintained in differentiated CD4+ T cells, where its locus-specific recruitment is dynamically modulated along with the T cell activation status. KAP1 depletion by RNA interference leads to a global decrease in repressive histone modifications that is accompanied by broad transcriptional alterations. Indeed, not only a large fraction of EREs become derepressed, but their deregulation correlates with illegittimate activation of nearby genes. Correspondingly, loss of KAP1 unleashes the intrinsic regulatory activities that some EREs are endowed with, suggesting a functional link between control of mobile genetic elements and protection of lineage-specific transcriptional networks. These findings establish the KRAB/KAP1 system as an important safeguard of CD4+ T cells transcriptional identity and suggest a critical role in maintaining epigenetic silencing of ERE-based regulatory sequences in adult tissues. Furthermore, our study shed light onto a previously unappreciated contribution of retrotransposon-derived sequences to the complexity of the human T cell transcriptome. A better knowledge of the physiological transcriptional activity of these mobile genetic elements, as well as their control mechanisms throughout development, would greatly help the debate on their pathologic implications.LV
Giovanni Boccaccio is quoted several times in Castiglione’s "Cortegiano", but all these mentions are inserted in two specific contexts: on the one hand, the debate on literary language, developed in the letter of dedication to don Michel De Silva and in the first book; on the other hand, the definition of the joke in book II. Starting from these premises, this essay analyses the meanings of Boccaccio’s presence in the "Cortegiano". It shows that Castiglione’s treatise provides two different and concurrent representations of the author of the "Decameron": a positive one, connected to the ‘questione della lingua’, that offers Boccaccio as a promoter of the usage (‘uso’); a critical one, deriving from the theory of the ‘facezia’, that makes Boccaccio a challenging and challenged model
This paper is based on observations made during the teaching experience of the author within the SSIS Lazio, ‘Foreign Languages’ programme. It concerns the contribution that the study of phonetics and phonology may provide in the training of future secondary school teachers
Despite its architectural appeal, no monographic study has been devoted to the monastery of San Pietro in Montorio. By comparing documented sources with present-day surveys of the building, direct observation data and probes conducted with modern technologies, the author retraces the configuration of both monastery and church the time they were restored by Amedeo Menez de Silva (1472-1482) and examines its further development to date, focusing in particular on the construction of the two cloisters
Pedagogia dei saperi.Problemi, luoghi e pratiche per l'educazione
The book takes into account the construction and modification of knowledge over the time in relation to human action and education sciences, focusing on formation and personal growth.
The author calls attention to the characteristics of the contemporary knowledge society that can be found in the widespread economic globalization accelerated by new network technologies, in a brisk renewal of knowledge and practices, in the set of beliefs, convictions, opinions with which we live and organize our behavior . The knowledge thus defined is today more important than ever, to the point that modern society is often described just as the knowledge society
In the context of Conde de Villamediana’s satirical poetry based on political themes, this article aims to illustrate what are the textual “signs” of the reality that allow the author to historicize his satirical attacks. In particular, the paper analyses two different authorial strategies: the first one relates to the adoption, by Villamediana, of the “déci-ma” poetical meter, as a privileged channel for achieving his satirical attacks. The second, however, corresponds to the different strategies of self-representation of the histori-cal “yo” into the space of the poetical transfiguration
