We have studied the statistical property of the water-level of the Fuji lakes. In this paper, the author explained that the changes of the waterlevel had some continuity, that is, the changes were more continuous than the stochastic expectation, and the distribution of water-level between Motosu and Saiko has much correlation, but between Yamanaka and the others there is no correlation

Late Pleistocene changes in terrestrial biomarkers in sediments from the central Arctic Ocean

Biomarkers in Late Pleistocene sediments collected from the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP)-Arctic Coring Expedition (ACEX) Hole M0004C (central Arctic Ocean) were investigated. The major biomarkers are long-chain n-alkanes, n-fatty acids and n-alkan-1-ols, indicating fresh organic matter (OM) derived predominantly from higher plants. The dominance of terrestrial biomarkers is attributed to severe OM degradation caused by slow sedimentation in oxygen-rich benthic water and/or low primary production due to permanent sea-ice coverage. Hopanes, representing thermally altered OM, tend to be abundant in samples with abundant ice rafted debris (IRD). An OM-rich dark grey layer deposited during marine isotope stage (MIS) 6 contains a significant amount of branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (branched GDGTs), suggesting ice erosion of organic-rich continental soil followed by transportation to the central Arctic by drifting ice. The labile–refractory index (i.e., the abundance ratio of long-chain n-alkan-1-ols to the sum of long-chain n-alkanes and long-chain n-alkan-1-ols) decreases above the dark grey layer, indicating that the OM became more refractory. This change suggests that coverage of the source region by OM-rich soil decreased because of extensive glacial erosion during MIS-6

Hmong popular music in Minneapolis and St. Paul: a middle-school music curriculum

    No full text
The capstone included a literature review that focused on teaching multicultural and popular music. The researcher investigated the definition of popular music, the globalization of popular music, and best practices for teaching popular music. This review also investigated theories of multicultural education, the intersection of multicultural education with music education, and models for teaching multicultural music education. This study employed ethnography and backward design to create a middle-school general music curriculum about Hmong popular music. The hip-hop musician Tou Saiko Lee and the rock musician Kace Vang were both interviewed during the ethnography and feature prominently in the curriculum. In addition the author described how ethnography and backward design were employed to generate the curriculum. The unit assessments included activities where students studied the life and music of Tou Lee and Kace Vang. These lessons require students to work in small groups to create and perform arrangements of songs by these musicians

Challenge of Ancient cynics to contemporary world: remedy for the chronic disease of civilization

    No full text
Reikšminiai žodžiai: Antikinės Graikijos kinikų filosofija; Malonumų perteklius; Smagračio principas; Radikalus saikingumas; Ancient Greek cynicism; Surplus of pleasures; Principle of flywheel; Radical temperanceArticle analyses one of the most important and interesting aspects of ancient Greek cynicism. Namely, the diagnosis of the main disease of ancient Greek civilization – the chase of surplus of pleasures – is investigated. The author of the article also explores radical temperance as the only remedy prescribed for that malignant malady together with askesis – the recipe for production of that remedy. The relevance of such a remedy to the modern form of above mentioned malady is as well analyzed. The article comes to conclusion that radical temperance once proposed by cynics is simply an overbitter and overtough tablet for unduly squeamish stomach of contemporary man. Meanwhile, the milder and softer variant of that tablet could contribute to mitigation of eternal malaise of civilization. That is, not radical but considerably milder form of temperance, which could be entitled the sense of proportion in everything; not ultimate constraint on human needs but just a reduction of consummation, could become contemporary means of prophylaxis. Similarly, askesis of ancient Greek cynics deprived of its radical dimension could become one of possible ways to achieve above mentioned sense of proportion

Methyl-2-arylidene hydrazinecarbodithioates: synthesis and biological activity

Methyl-2-arylidene hydrazine-carbodithioate has not been of particular interest to researchers even though its metal complexes are extensively reported on due to their biological activity. This study examined the cytostatic and antiviral activity of twelve methyl-2-arylidene hydrazinecarbodithioates reported by many researchers as intermediates for the synthesis of thiosemicarbazides and the preparation of their metal complexes. Compounds IIc, IIi, and IIl with tridentate ligand features were found to have the lowest IC50 value (6.5 μM, ≈ 1 μM, and 0.8 μM, respectively) against HL60 human promyelocytic leukemia cells. They were also most inhibitory to human embryonic lung (HEL) fibroblast proliferation (5.3 μM, 17 μM, and 2.6 μM). Compound IIc and IIl show antiviral activity against wild-type herpes simplex virus (HSV), varicella zoster virus (VZV), and acyclovirresistant HSV; however, these activities were observed at concentrations at which the compounds also markedly inhibit HL60 and HEL cell proliferation.sponsorship: The author acknowledges the University Grants Commission (UGC) & All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), India, for financial support (JRF) to the first author and the GOA (no. 10/014) of the KU Leuven; Sophisticated Instrumentation Facility (SAIF) of the Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), Lucknow, for enabling the use of the facility for spectral characterisation of compounds.

An abundance of quotes is provided, in which this episode is interpreted in various ways by different researchers - some explain the described mourning for the lord as a direct expression of great sorrow, while the others see apparent comedy, hyperbolisation and satire. The article tries to find out why Donelaitis shows the image of the sorrow of boors (būrai) for the death of the kind-hearted lord for as many as two times, and whether this image is actually comical. It is assumed that the episode was important to the writer - after all, the poet read exactly this part of the story to the friends that once came to visit. The author of the article agrees with the statement that the image of the death of the good Lord is somewhat hyperbolized. However, in her opinion, hyperbole was used not because Donelaitis wanted to emphasize the tendency to cry a lot that Lithuanians are characterized by or to cause a comical effect. In author's opinion, the episode is philosophical. It deals with the eternal question - how much is it necessary to mourn? Should a person's grief be infinite and eternal? Ancient philosophy requires moderation when it comes to sorrow and other life experiences. An unhealthy sorrow is a fault that shakes and distorts the body and soul of a person and causes sickness. Thus, by scolding the boors, Pričkus and Selmas, created by Donelaitis, act like ancient philosophers, and the episode of the death of the kind-hearted lord, like the Delphic wisdom, speaks of the necessity and significance of moderation. Analogy with ancient writers is evident, and it is not surprising, since both Cicero, Seneka and Plutarch were the authors of Donelaitis' era
