Italy without Urban ‘Sprinkling’. A Uchronia for a Country that Needs a Retrofit of Its Urban and Landscape Planning
The research presented in the work is linked to important production of data over 10 years of activity that allowed us to trace the configuration of Italian urban settlements in the 1950s. Starting from this information, the paper puts forward a uchronian reconstruction of the physiognomy of the national territory asking if—instead of the weak urban development policies implemented for over half a century—a more purposeful method of planning and designing settlements had been chosen in the Sixties to favor their aggregation and protect the country’s huge landscape heritage. From the model used, important indications emerge for control and management of retrofit (de-sprinkling) policies of which the need has been felt in recent years, as suggested by repeated messages from European bodies, the scientific community, associations and some politicians. The uchronic scenario is constructed starting from the settlement configuration of the 1950s, developing a model of maximum aggregation for the urbanized parts that were intervened in between this period and 2000, simulating a geography that maintains the quantities of soil transformed over the last 50 years. It emerges from the processing of the data that the Italian territory would have retained its low settlement density areas almost intact at the same level as in the 50s, that is to say 73% of the entire peninsular territory. It would also have preserved a large part of its free peninsular and insular coastline at about 60–70%, against the present day 45%
GALNT2 effect on HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides levels in humans: Evidence of pleiotropy?
A wide range of studies both in humans and animal models point GALNT2 as a shaper of serum HDL-C and TG levels. Available data in humans indicate that, while under conditions of extreme GALNT2 loss-of-function HDL-C is the main target, a fine-tuning of GALNT2 changes is mostly associated with TG levels. Understanding whether different degrees of GALNT2 change do modulate different serum lipid fractions and, if so, addressing the mechanisms underlying such pleiotropic effects has the potential not only to improve our understanding of HDL-C and TG metabolism, but also to make GALNT2 becoming a target for treating atherogenic dyslipidemia and related clinical events
The Tratturo Magno: structural analysis for the identification of enhancement areas.
Today, the ancient routes of transhumance (Tratturi) represent an inestimable historical and cultural heritage. This fact is underlined by its inclusion in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO (2019). Moreover, from the first decades of the last century, the strong migration from the Italian internal areas has caused a slow and inexorable decline of transhumance with the Tratturi’s abandonment. Consequently, Tratturi have been deeply transformed. This paper traces the evolution of the territorial transformation that erodes the historical and cultural identity of the Tratturo Magno, with particular attention to the residual patches on which recovery and enhancement interventions can be proposed
Il Tratturo Magno L’Aquila Foggia. Stato dell’arte, criticità e potenzialità The Tratturo Magno L’Aquila Foggia. State of the art, criticalities and potentiality
During the last years, interest in the theme of the “Tratturo” has gradually grown, fueling different types of initiatives: beyond tourist and cultural events, aimed at knowledge of history and at the enhancement of local resources, we assisted at the diffusion of studies coming mainly from public offices and universities, which have analyzed the issue from a scientific, technical and infrastructural point of view, as well as socio-cultural. Almost all the researches have analyzed the cognitive aspects and the historical and cultural evolution of the phenomenon of transhumance, in order to deepen the preliminary phase of knowledge and reconstruct the track layout, lost over the years. On the other hand, the growing interest in global sustainability has given rise to important ideas for re-projecting the route as a modern infrastructure. In this article we present the main studies with original extracts, objectives, results and criticalities in order to identify not yet explored themes
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Fragile Territories Around Cities: Analysis on Small Municipalities Within Functional Urban Areas
Although many disadvantaged areas are remote and isolated, the others are close to dense urban areas. Then, these peri-urban areas are both peripheral and fragile and, often, they are fringes from urban areas, where the well-known urban-rural mix occur.
In recent years, the most fragile urban areas have experienced growing attention. Through the years policymakers have tried to face territorial disadvantages with the help of funds.
Law 158/2017 is one example. The Law proposes twelve criteria to identify and then select small municipalities to support. In 2020 a research proposed to convert Law’s criteria into indicators. Combinations of indicators can identify different conditions of fragility. These combinations are useful starting point for further studies on small municipalities.
The present work uses data from the mentioned research for focusing on peri-urban areas. The case study is composed of small municipalities within three Functional Urban Areas (FUA) in Central Italy: L’Aquila, Perugia and Terni. Then, the paper points out the relationship between indicators of fragility and peculiar features of these areas
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
