    Rene Martinez (Class of 1969) was interviewed by Carson Dudick in the Clements Department of History Conference Room at Southern Methodist University on July 7, 2018. The interview was recorded by Carson Dudick. Martinez describes growing up in the Little Mexico neighborhood of Dallas, where he focused on school, sports, and work in restaurants at an early age. He discusses his time at SMU, including the many professors who mentored him during and after college; his focus on Latin American affairs, history and Spanish; his friendship with Jerry LeVias and participation in many intramural sports; and his socialization with other Latin American students. He describes Martin Luther King's speech on campus; taking his friends to his parents' house and to Mexican parties; study abroad in Peru; receiving the Gambrell Award, and development of the Hispanic Alumni Association. He believes SMU, particularly the School of Education, should do more to increase Latiné enrollment, particularly Mexican Americans. He talks about his extensive community and civil rights involvement, including DISD school desegregation, bilingual education, the Mexican American Youth Organization, LULAC in the late 1970s, Raza Unida, and the protest marches for the Santos Rodriguez shooting in 1973

    This study of the Negro in the novels of Rene Maran, Frances most prominent contemporary Negro author, is one of several being made at Atlanta University on the Negro in French literature. This attempt to-show how a Negro, the only one ever to receive the Prix Goncourt, portrays his African brothers, is the first American study of Rene Maran's novels. It is hoped that it will be a modest contribution to an almost unexplored field in French literature and that other students of France and her culture will be inspired to make a more extensive study of Rene Maran and his works. The first chapter is devoted to the life of Rene Maran and a discussion of his style and most important works. The second chapter presents the physical characteristics of the Negro as portrayed by Rene' Maran. Emphasis is placed on physical appearance, tribal marks, dress, disease and odors which seem to be especially characteristic of the Negro. The third chapter is devoted to the social characteristics of the Negro with emphasis on home life, food, religion, feasts, and governments. The last chapter will present a summary of the findings of this study. The appendix includes short synopses of each of the novels with Negro characters, and a latter from Monsieur Maran to the writer. aIt is to be regretted that such a small amount of material has been written on Rene Maran. Because of his modesty he has written even less about himself. Biographical material consists principally of Leon Bocquet's "Preface" to le Petit Roi de Chimerie, a fairy story by Rene Maran; le Coeur serre, an autobiography written as a novel; several articles which have appeared in periodicals and the forementioned letter from Monsieur Maran. First editions of all novels, with exception of Le Livre de la brousse, were used. As the latter was unavailable, the second edition (1937) was used. Rene Maran's most important novels on Africa, Batouala, Djouma, Chien de brousse, Le Journal sans date end le Livre de la brousse have been studied. The novelettes Bokorro and Bassarragba have also been used as references but the longer novels have constituted our major interest. Le Petit Roi de Chimerie , though it contains no Negro characters, was quoted because of one excellent example of Rene Maran's style. Less stress has been placed on Le Journal sans date because only one of its characters is a Negro. The writer sincerely appreciates the kindness and help of Rene Maran, whose letter was a source of constant encouragement

    Hardware acceleration of frequent itemsets mining on data streams

    In recent times, processing of data streams is gaining the attention of the scientific community due to its practical applications, e.g. network traffic analysis and surveillance, sensor networks control, and financial transactions mining, among others. Data streams are unbounded and infinite flows of data arriving at high rates and; therefore, traditional Data Mining approaches (such as Data Classification, Clustering, and Frequent Itemsets Mining among others) cannot be used straightforwardly. Frequent Itemsets Mining is a Data Mining technique focused on obtaining hidden patterns in data, and it has been used to extract useful knowledge from various data sources, recently including data streams. Finding alternatives to improve the processing time in the discovery of frequent itemsets on data streams is an active research topic. One option to improve the discovery of frequent itemsets is to develop single-pass parallel algorithms that can be implemented in hardware architectures (taking advantage of the inherent parallelism of such devices). Two methods for Frequent Itemsets Mining on data streams are proposed in this dissertation. The first method is based on systolic trees, and the other relies on hash functions and the lexicographic order of items received in transactions of data streams. Both methods fulfill the Continuity, Expiration and Infinity constraints of data streams. The general problem of finding frequent itemsets on data streams can be divided into four subproblems: 1. Data streams are composed of long transactions in a large alphabet. 2. Data streams are composed of long transactions in a small alphabet. 3. Data streams are composed of short transactions in a small alphabet. 4. Data streams are composed of short transactions in a large alphabet. The methods reported in this dissertation are oriented to solve the second and fourth subproblems, and by solving these two subproblems, the third subproblem is indirectly also solved. The first subproblem was not faced because it has been attacked from the software perspective. The method based on systolic tree faces the second subproblem by implementing a hardware architecture based on a tree-like data structure where transactions flow from the top to the bottom and from the left to the right concurrently without interruptions. This method outperforms the processing time of the algorithms reported in the state-of-the-art using software and hardware development platforms and can process the inco

    Arquitectura hardware-software para acelerar el entrenamiento de SVM

    In this work we describe Support Vector Machines (SVM) and their theoretical foundation. Also, we describe the most cited algorithms in the literature that implement SVM explaining their characteristics and particularities. Since training SVM has quadratic complexity concerning training data size, we propose a hardware-software architecture to speed up SVM’s training phase, using a general purpose processor with enhanced functions using a coprocessor. The algorithm is partitioned so that the general-purpose processor will execute iterative and control sections while the coprocessor will execute parallel ones. Experiments demonstrate that architecture can speed up SVM´s training phase 178.7 times compared to the best known algorithm implemented in software.En este trabajo se detallan las Máquinas de Soporte Vectorial y las bases teóricas sobre las que se sustentan. Se hace una descripción de los principales algoritmos que las implementan y que han mostrado mejores resultados según la bibliografía analizada, explicando sus características y particularidades. Teniendo en cuenta que el entrenamiento de una Máquina de Soporte Vectorial es un problema de complejidad cuadrática respecto a las dimensiones de los datos de entrenamiento, es que se propone el diseño e implementación de una arquitectura hardware-software para acelerar el entrenamiento de SVM mediante procesadores de propósito general cuyas funcionalidades puedan ser expandidas con el uso de coprocesadores acoplados. En el procesador central se ejecutarán las funciones de control y secuenciales mientras que en el coprocesador se ejecutarán las funciones paralelizables.
