From Sensors to Applications: A Proposal to Fill the Gap
In this paper, basing on the results of previous studies, we present an information processing architecture that aims to lessen the distance between sensors and applications in as much humanly unsupervised way as possible. With the impressive growth of today’s computational and miniaturization technologies, it is likely that the distance between sensors and applications could be covered by one single device or system only. Practically, it happens that experts such as system integrators or engineers are often needed to fill in the gap. The proposed computational model uses the notion of ‘holon’, a concept that is well suited for multi-level information processing, from the raw data level up to the knowledge-oriented information level. For test purposes, a data analysis platform called H-GIS that grounds on the current proposal has been employed and a case study has been commented
Towards Intelligent Sensor Evolution: A Holonic-Based System Architecture
Rapid developments of smart sensor technologies envisage a new era where information handling and knowledge sharing will play a crucial role. Traditional sensors were conceived as simple hardware transducers of physical quantities into measurable signals, eventually requiring an analogue/digital conversion to make data available for software applications. IEEE-1451 family of standards has added to mere transduction some architectural prescriptions to mainly address the issue of connection transparency, a desirable property virtually making any sensor a plug-and-play device. Our percept is that next generation smart sensor-based systems will have to face another challenge: the need to endow devices with the ability to process application-level bits of knowledge to best accomplish their informative goals. As a result, unexpected proactive and dialogue-oriented behaviors will have to be taken into account, thus reducing the gap between what we commonly refer to as smart sensors and intelligent agents. In order to support this view, a semantic-driven sensor-based system architecture is introduced and an example proof-of-concept case study is commented
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

The disposition of primidone in elderly patients.
The pharmacokinetics and metabolism of primidone at steady-state were studied in 10 elderly patients aged 70-81 years and eight control subjects aged 18-26 years. 2. Primidone half-lives and clearance values (mean +/- s.d.) were similar in the elderly and in the young (12.1 +/- 4.6 vs 14.7 +/- 3.5 h and 34.8 +/- 9.0 vs 33.2 +/- 7.2 ml h-1 kg-1 respectively. 3. The serum concentrations of the metabolites phenylethylmalonamide (PEMA) and phenobarbitone relative to those of parent drug were higher in the elderly than in the young, the difference being significant (P less than 0.01) in the case of PEMA. 4. The renal clearances of primidone, phenobarbitone and PEMA were moderately decreased in the elderly but this reduction was statistically significant only for PEMA. Elderly patients excreted a reduced proportion of unchanged primidone and an increased proportion of PEMA in urine. 5. Ageing is associated with a greater accumulation of PEMA, which is unlikely to have a major clinical significance
