Na rozdrożach współczesnej demokracji w kontekście partycypacji obywatelskiej młodzieży

    No full text
Considerations included in the article by Robert Pyka concern tensions between a national country losing influence and still developing logic of the government of the globalised world. The crux of the matter is notions such as Pierr Rosanvalon’s “counter‑democracy”. The author asks about a contemporary sense of representative democracy, pointing to the contracting role of the country in the light of growing expectations of the citizens. Showing dangers coming from a global market, the sense of being lost in an abruptly changing reality, as well as alienation and the lack of understanding of actions of selected government representatives threaten with the arrival of post‑democracy in which the citizens stop treating a democratic system seriously and, in consequence, leave it. Critical considerations are confirmed by the author who quotes the studies pointing to the fall of election frequency among teenagers and a small engagement of the members of party organizations. An increase in a neutral or a negative attitude to institutionalized forms of representative democracy is accompanied by simultaneous searching for direct and more effective forms of political participation. In the end of the article Pyka admits that “democratic movements” are right believing that they will motivate the citizens to efficient actions shaping a new and better democracy in the 21st century

Twin-Peaks - What the Knowledge-Based Approach Can Say about the Dynamics of the World Income Distribution

    No full text
One of the most recently observed stylised facts in the field of economic growth is the persistent bimodal shape of the world income distribution.. Of course, some theoretical explanations for this new stylised fact already have been provided by neoclassical growth theory within a maximising framework. Although innovation and technology are recognised as being the driving forces behind growth processes, these models maintain the restrictive assumption of a rational acting representative agent. In this paper we draw on a synergetic approach of evolutionary economics. In the model, the countries' productivity development is depicted as a sequence of relative technological levels and the movement from one level to the next higher one is governed by stochastic transition rates. The motivation for these transition rates is based on the knowledge-based approach of evolutionary economics, thereby taking into account depleting technological opportunities, the effects of technological infrastructure and permanent technological obsolescence due to an ubiquitous scientific progress. With this model we are able to show how a persistent bimodal distribution - the twin peaks - endogenously emerges via self-organisation. This simulated distribution matches well with the kernel density plot, calculated for GDP per worker data relative to the GDP per worker in the USA over the period 1960-90 for a sample of 104 countries. Both the empirical and theoretical results show an evolution of the density function toward bimodality with a decreasing number of countries with low relative productivity levels and an increasing number of countries with high relative productivity levels, indicating a prevalent catching-up during the period of investigation. However, the separation of both groups of countries is getting more significant over time and therefore further catching-up is expected to become increasingly difficult in the future.

Infection with hepatitis C virus as a cause of nervous system disorders Krystian Ślusarz, Patrycja Łanowy, Weronika Pyka, Bartosz Bijak, Miłosz Bichalski, Jakub Dzindzio, Jerzy Jaroszewicz* Department of Infectious Diseases and Hepatology, Medical University of Silesia, Bytom, Poland * E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT: Hepatitis C is a disease caused by hepatitis C virus (HCV), which prevalence may reach over 5% in some countries. Untreated infection may lead to death due to cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma. Almost 80% of infected patients occurs as asymptomatic. Symptoms of hepatitis C may include jaundice, nausea, vomiting, fever or muscle and joint pains. Even half of the patients experience nervous system disorders, due to the affinity of some types of HCV to nerve cells. It is also estimated that up to 30% of patients with chronic hepatitis C will develop cirrhosis within 25-30 years. Currently, the vast majority of infected patients can be cured thanks to the introduction of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs). Key words: hepatitis C virus, HCV, neurocognitive disorders, nervous system disorder

Emotion specific modulation of automatic amygdala responses by 5-HTTLPR genotype

    No full text
A functional polymorphism in the serotonin transporter gene (5-HTTLPR) has been reported to modulate amygdala responsiveness to negative environmental cues. However, it remains unclear whether 5-HTTLPR modulates amygdala responses specifically to negative stimuli or rather to emotionally salient stimuli in general. In 44 healthy subjects, amygdala responses to subliminally presented happy and sad facial expressions were assessed by means of fMRI at 3 Tesla. All subjects were genotyped for 5-HTTLPR and the recently discovered 5-HTT rs25531. We observed a robust emotion by genotype group interaction in the right amygdala. Risk allele carriers (S or L(G)) showed similar amygdala responses to happy faces compared to homozygous L(A)L(A) carriers but increased amygdala responses to sad faces. The right amygdala was the only anatomical region across the whole brain demonstrating this interaction at a reasonable threshold. It appears that whereas 5-HTT gene variation modulates automatic amygdala responsiveness to sad faces, no such association was found for happy faces. We conclude that 5-HTTLPR genotype predominantly impacts the central processing predominantly of negative environmental cues but not of emotionally salient stimuli in general.Udo Dannlowski, Carsten Konrad, Harald Kugel, Pienie Zwitserlood, Katharina Domschke, Sonja Schöning, Patricia Ohrmann, Jochen Bauer, Martin Pyka, Christa Hohoff, Weiqi Zhang, Bernhard T. Francuskie metropolie jako przykład "władzy nieukończonej" : wstęp do analizy kształtowania się metropolitalnych tożsamości politycznych we Francji

    No full text
The author makes an attempt at explaining the process of shaping of political identity of metropolitan areas that are regarded as a sign of “new territorialities”, emerging due to globalization as well as metropolization of modern states. Also, the author emphasizes that following by democratic institutions (and thus political identity and subjectivity) the reforms of territorial structure sanctioning new areas of shaping social reality plays an important role in proper functioning of the democratic country. Modern France, as well as territorial reforms undertaken in 2010—2014, constitutes the area of analyses and inquiries. Using a constructivist concept of political identity, the author advances a thesis that citizens’ political identity is the aftermath of the emergence of political market — a space for debate, competition and rivalry, whose settlement comes with the political power. The emergence of autonomic public space in metropolitan areas must therefore be the result of the political power being located on this level. Since the “power of the metropolis” in France still remains incomplete, the metropolitan identity is at an early state of development. Nonetheless, the reform effected in 2014 by the MAPTAM act, as well as the transformation of the Metropolis of Lyon into a fully-fledged unit of territorial government prove that the empowerment of major urban and metropolitan areas has already become a constant vector of transformations within the French system of territorial organization, which will be accompanied with new territorial political identities in the future

Turystyka biznesowa jako narzędzie zmiany wizerunku i zrównoważonej metropolizacji miast poprzemysłowych na przykładzie Katowic

    No full text
Postindustrial agglomerations struggling with image deficits and environmental problems are looking for new development paths to take. One of these paths can bring about the development of business tourism, including the industry of the organisation of meetings and events. The unique and attractive character of the place can favour taking such a direction. The business tourism sector can therefore become an instrument contributing to the sustainable metropolisation of the city by building up its position in the global network of flows. The development of the meetings and events sector allows, therefore, for a change of image, for a re-evaluation of endogenous resources, including those relating to the industrial past, and for tapping into the unlimited resources of the global network. Increased attention in this network may lead to an influx of more events, and of investors as well. Replacing heavy industry with an enlarged service sector and modern industry based on flexible and innovative small and medium-sized enterprises fosters sustainable development. The meetings and events industry can become a tool for sustainable development and the promotion of its ideas, related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The trajectory outlined above seems very promising. However, to some extent, it is just a hypothesis. The author undertakes to test it on the example of Katowice, a former industrial city which has decided to follow the route outlined above to become a city that hosts many events, including the COP24 summit in 2018. In the article, the author presents empirical research studies whose authors tried to determine whether the path the city has chosen has a real impact on its image and development. The author also deals with the question of the sustainability of such a development path and the conditions for its self-support in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis
