RoMEO Studies 4: An analysis of Journal publishers' Copyright Agreements
No full textThis article is the fourth in a series of six emanating from the UK JISC-funded RoMEO Project (Rights Metadata for Open archiving). It describes an analysis of 80 scholarly journal publishers’ copyright agreements with a particular view to their effect on author self-archiving. 90% of agreements asked for copyright transfer and 69% asked for it prior to refereeing the paper. 75% asked authors to warrant that their work had not been previously published although only two explicitly stated that they viewed self-archiving as prior publication. 28.5% of agreements provided authors with no usage rights over their own paper. Although 42.5% allowed self-archiving in some format, there was no consensus on the conditions under which self-archiving could take place. BMPs Regulate the Oft Development via miRNAs
No full textCongenital heart diseases (CHD) are the leading cause of infant mortality and morbidity. Defects of the outflow tract (OFT) make up a large percentage of human CHD. In my study, I focused on the role of Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) on heart development. I investigated Bmp signaling in OFT development using conditional knocking out Bmps, including Bmp2, -4 and -7. Deletion of Bmp4/7 in second heart field (SHF) results in persistent truncus arteriosus (PTA), which is caused by endothelial to mesenchyme transition (EMT) defect. I found that Vegfa (vascular endothelial growth factor a) is a downstream target of Bmp and miR-17-92. Repression of Vegfa in OFT is important for the proper onset of EMT at E10.5. Further exploration on Bmp2/4/7 mutation indicates that loss of Bmp signal disrupt the smooth muscle differentiation and maintenance. Similar with observations on Marfan syndrome mouse model, Bmp2/4/7 triple CKO embryos exhibited significant upregulation of Tgf-�� signal activity. Alternation of SMC feature is likely due to the persistence of Isl-1 expression. Haploinsufficiency of Bmp4 triggered early onset of aorta aneurysm in Fbn-1^(C1039G/+) mice. These data indicate that Bmps not only play an important role in embryonic cardiogenesis, but also are critical for the cell fate differentiation and maintenance in adulthood

No full textEuropa und der Vordere Orient stehen immer wieder miteinander in Interaktion. Eine besondere Rolle in der Begegnung zwischen dem Orient und Europa nahm dabei stets das orientalische Christentum ein. Waren die Christen in der islamischen Welt einerseits mancherlei Repressionen ausgesetzt, waren sie andererseits auch nicht einfach die fünfte Kolonne Europas und des christlichen Westens. In verschiedenen Formen der Interaktion – über Literatur, Reisen oder den Kontakt zu westlichen Missionen – kam den orientalischen Christen vielmehr eine Mittlerstellung zu, und oft wurden durch sie europäische Impulse im Orient wirksam. Die Beiträge des von Martin Tamcke herausgegebenen Sammelbands untersuchen aus verschiedenen Perspektiven unterschiedliche Facetten des orientalischen Christentums und seiner Interaktion mit Europa von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart. Enthalten sind Studien zu Rezeptionsprozessen und Innenperspektive des orientalischen Christentums, zur Missionsgeschichte, zur Interaktion zwischen orientalischen Christen und Europa und zur Koexistenz zwischen Christen und Muslimen. Für jeden Beleg werden Herkunft, Typisierung, Aufschriften auf den Herbaretiketten sowie Bemerkungen anderer Autoren wiedergegeben. Der gültige Name der jeweiligen Sippe wird, sofern er zweifelsfrei bekannt ist, aufgeführt. Vierzig Belege gehören zu Typusaufsammlungen, darunter befinden sich 9 Holotypen, 2 Isotypen, 2 Lectotypen, 2 Isolectotypen, 6 Syntypen und 19 weitere Typen. A checklist of type specimens belonging to the Brassicaceae deposited in the herbarium of the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg (HAL) is presented. The binominals are arranged alphabetically. Beside the names listed commentaries dealing with type locality, typifications, previous annotations, and synonymy are added. As far as they could be ascertained, currently adopted names are furnished at the end of each paragraph. Forty entries concern type material. Nine of the specimens cited are holotypes, two collections are isotypes, two collection are lectotypes, two are isolectotypes, and six are recognized as syntypes. Dundee Discussion Papers in Economics 163:Measuring access to health services: general dental services in Scotland
No full textObjective Recently the issue of access to health services has been brought into sharp focus by clear evidence of rationing patients queuing for NHS registration in the NHS General Dental Services. Conventional estimates suggest that about 50% of adults are registered per annum. This paper demonstrates that these conventional measures of access and utilisation can generate potentially misleading inferences. Design By analysing individual-level claims data from over 35,000 patients over 6 years we are able to: identify the underlying patterns of utilisation that generate the aggregate 50% registration rate; provide more detailed estimates of utilisation and access; and suggest possible determinants of the patterns of utilisation we observe. Setting Primary Care Results In contrast to conventional estimates of access we nd that access to GDS in Scotland is over 80% over 6 years. Moreover, we find that the population is comprised of a relatively large group of patients (30% of the population) who access GDP services at least once a year and a substantial group (19% of the adult population) who access services only once in 6 years. The groups who access services at intermediate frequencies are less numerous. Conclusions Assessing the e¤ectiveness of the public provision of health care services requires accurate information regarding access to those services.
