Die Photographie zeichnet hübsche oder weniger hübsche Bildchen.“ Mit dieser für Adolf Loos typisch polemischen Ausdrucksweise charakterisiert er unumwunden seine Einstellung gegenüber der Architekturfotografie - diese sei nicht nur nichtssagend, sondern auch täuschend, wirkungslos und erziehe den Menschen gar falsch. Wenn auch überspitzt formuliert, ist diese Kritik bezeichnend für die Diskussion um jene fotografische Transformation, welche eine dreidimensionale Architektur in ein zweidimensionales Bild überträgt. Mit der Erörterung dieser transformatorischen Prozesse wird diese Arbeit begonnen - denn seiner ablehnenden Haltung gegenüber der Fotografie zum Trotz, ließ Loos seine Bauten für eine von seinem Schüler Heinrich Kulka 1931 herausgegebene und von ihm selbst autorisierte Monografie über sein Oeuvre fotografisch dokumentieren.
Der Wiener Architekturfotograf Martin Gerlach jun. erhielt den Auftrag, für die Monografie sämtliche Bauten des Architekten zu fotografieren. Vorliegende Arbeit wird sich jenen Bildern, welche die 1928 errichtete Villa Moller zum Gegenstand haben, widmen.
Das Bild eines Gebäudes ist nicht der Bau selbst – dies hat auch Adolf Loos erkannt: „Ich bin gegen das Photographieren von Interieurs. Es kommt dabei etwas ganz anderes heraus.“ verkündete Loos 1924. Eine „objektive Sicht“ auf Dinge oder Architektur ist nur insofern vorhanden, als der Fotograf ein abzulichtendes Objekt durch sein Objektiv auf die Platte der Kamera überträgt. „Die Bilder können erst einem Blick Autorität verleihen, der von ihnen Bestätigung sucht“ schreibt auch Hans Belting.
Vor diesem Hintergrund wird in dieser Arbeit, sowohl der Blick des Architekten als auch des Fotografen selbst auf die Architektur sowie das komplexe Beziehungsgeflecht zwischen diesen beiden analysiert. Trotz seiner kritischen Haltung gegenüber der Fotografie begleitete
Loos Gerlach jun. bei seinen Aufnahmen und ließ seine Bauten oft auf sehr widersprüchliche
Art und Weise ablichten. So sind zum Beispiel die Außenaufnahmen der Villa Moller ohne
der Bildtradition des von Loos so vehement abgelehnten „Feindes“ Bauhaus nicht denkbar.
Die fotografische Umsetzung des Raumplanes war sicher eine der am schwierigsten zu lösenden Aufgaben. Um dieses komplexe Architekturprinzip bildnerisch umsetzen zu können bediente sich der Fotograf eines stringenten fotografischen Konzeptes das auch zeitgenössische Strömungen wie etwa das „Neue Sehen“ reflektiert. Mit diesen Bildern emanzipierte sich Gerlach am stärksten von den traditionellen Vorstellungen des Architekten.
Obwohl diese Fotos am überzeugendsten den Raumplan repräsentieren sind sie entweder gar nicht oder nur in veränderter Form in der Monografie abgedruckt worden – mit einem zwiespältigen Resultat

LooS: co-producing youth mental healthcare
No full textThe increasing waiting times in youth mental health care pose a significant challenge, driven by a shortage of specialists and external factors that complicate diagnosis and prolong treatment. Shoshin, a multidisciplinary strategic design and innovation agency, has developed a solution known as the Fit Op Weg Poli (FOWP) to address this issue for adult care at GGZ Delfland. This thesis aims to engage youth healthcare providers in the development of a youth FOWP.To tackle the design challenge, the double diamond method is applied, involving extensive research and collaborative sessions. This process led to the development of LooS, a co-production framework tailored for young individuals aged between twelve and twenty-seven years old. Co-production for LooS leads to improved service delivery and increased efficiency, aiming to transform youth mental health care.LooS incorporates several crucial elements to support youth mental health. An easily accessible well-being gym is provided, empowering young individuals to enhance their resilience and overall well-being. A walk-in centre offers a safe and non-judgmental space for peer interaction and support. The intake process involves a comprehensive assessment, and each young person is assigned a dedicated buddy who provides support throughout their recovery journey. Welcome packages are provided to manage expectations and offer essential resources, including e-health tools and information about the recovery process.Recovery is facilitated through group sessions with a recovery coach, accompanied by the use of e-health tools for progress monitoring and exercises for continued growth. LooS aims to transition 20-30% of clients to a stage where therapy is no longer required, while those who still need therapy will receive specialised group therapy, after recovery.In the case of a crisis, the program can be scaled up swiftly to provide immediate support. After a crisis, diagnosis-specific therapy will always be provided, and the recovery coach ensures continued aftercare. The aftercare is structured in layers, offering self-testing and a safety net for a smooth transition. Once individuals no longer require aftercare, they bid farewell to their buddy and continue working on their mental resilience in the well-being gym.LooS is designed to be adaptable for implementation in multiple centres/locations across The Netherlands, allowing for widespread access to youth mental health care. To support open discussions with healthcare providers, a visual aid called the “Praatplaat” and a brochure have been created. These tools highlight the impact of LooS on the care pathway and waiting times to enable engagement among healthcare providers to co-produce their own LooS centres. A comprehensive blueprint has been developed, providing a clear and structured guide for the co-development process of Shosin with healthcare providers.In conclusion, LooS is a new approach to youth mental health care, focusing on proactive work on mental resilience, accessible support services, and collaborative engagement. By implementing LooS, the aim is to transform the youth mental health care system, reduce waiting times, and provide holistic care for youth. Measurability of Loos' rejection of the ornament - Using box-counting as a method for analysing facades
No full textAs evidence from recent years has demonstrated, box-counting provides an objective fractal analytical method to evaluate the visual complexity of architecture. This paper for the first time explores the potential of box-counting with regard to the work of the Viennese architect Adolf Loos (1870-1933). Loos is seen as the pioneer of modern architecture, as someone who anticipated the International Style. This impression derives from his resentments towards the ornament, expressed especially in his texts. However, Loos did not reject ornamentation in general. Thus, the group of smooth plastered facades provides a narrowed view on his overall architectural concept. A more differentiated view on Loos' oeuvre is not new; however, the author further develops the possibilities of describing facades geometrically by using an implementation of the fractal analytical method, especially created for facades. This paper not only focuses on the possibility of grouping facades with similar characteristic values, but considers other aspects of Loos' design such as space as well

No full textTato diplomová práce pojednává o postavení a funkci ornamentu v názorech i dílech architekta Adolfa Loose. Tento cíl je rozveden v kontextu sbírek Loosových statí Ins Leere gesprochen a Trotzdem, na základě jejichž rozboru je formulována Loosova strategie myšlení. Zvláštní pozornost je věnována eseji Ornament und Vebrechen jako ideovému základu pro Loosovu polemiku o ornamentu. Téma ornamentu je zohledněno také v rámci širšího kulturněhistorického kontextu, především vývoje Hnutí uměleckých řemesel na území Rakousko-Uherska, Německa, Velké Británie a Spojených států v období od druhé poloviny 19. století do konce třicátých let 20. století. V kontextu spolku Secese jsou Loosovy názory komparovány s tvorbou Otty Wagnera a Josefa Hoffmanna. Práce nadto obsahuje chronologicky seřazené bibliografické údaje zahrnující život i dílo Adolfa Loose, autorskou úvahu nad možností existence ornamentu v jeho dílech a bohatou fotografickou přílohu.ObhájenoThis diploma thesis is focused on the role and function of ornament in the opinions and in the works of the architect Adolf Loos. This objective is elaborated in the context of Ins Leehre gesprochen (Spoken into the Void) and Trotzdem, on the base of the analysis of this essays is formulated Loos´s Strategy of Sorting. Special attention is paid to the essay Ornament und Verbrechen (Ornament and Crime) as the ideological basis for Loos´s polemic about the ornament. Theme ornament is also reflected in the broader cultural and historical context, especially in the development of Arts and Crafts Movement in the territory of Austria-Hungary, Germany, Great Britain and the United States during the second half of the 19th century to thirties of 20th century. In the context of the Art Nouveau are Loos´s opinions compared with the works of Otto Wagner and Josef Hoffmann.
