    Richardson, Barbauld, and the construction of an early modern fan club

    MPhilMuch has been written about the life and long works of the eighteenth century epistolary novelist, Samuel Richardson, but the prospect of his position as the first celebrity novelist – responsible for courting his own fame as well as initiating his own fan club – has largely been ignored. The body of manuscripts housed at the National Art Library in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London provides the modern scholar with evidence of the skeletal beginnings of an early fan club. This thesis aims to show how these manuscripts were turned into a saleable commodity by the publisher and entrepreneur Richard Phillips, while under the guiding hand of another, slightly later, literary celebrity, Anna Laetitia Barbauld. In order to restore Richardson’s reputation amongst a new nineteenth century audience, Barbauld was required to construct her own idea of him as an eighteenth century celebrity author, and in doing so the insecurities of a self-professed, apparently diffident man, are revealed. Barbauld’s capacious, but heavily edited selection of letters is analyzed in this thesis, providing ample evidence that Richardson’s correspondents were more than just eager letter writers. By using Barbauld’s biography of Richardson this thesis aims to show how she manipulates the genre of life writing in her construction of him. This thesis offers an alternative reading of how the Richardson manuscripts are viewed, redefining them as not simply a collection of letters, but as a collective entity, deliberately selected and archived as evidence of an early modern fan club, and its celebrity managing director

    Musikstädte as real and imaginary soundscapes: urban musical images as literary motifs in twentieth-century German modernism

    PhDThis study examines German literary images of musical life as part of the wider sound identity of the modern German city at the turn of the twentieth century. Focussing on a forty-year period from 1890 to 1930, synonymous with the emergence of the modern German metropolis as an aesthetic object, the project assesses, compares and contrasts how musical life in the Musikstädte was perceived and portrayed by writers in an increasingly noisy urban environment. How does urban musical life influence and condition city writings? What are the differences and similarities between the writings on various musical cities? Can an urban textual sound identity be derived from these differences and similarities? The approach employed to answer these questions is a new, cross-disciplinary one to urban sound in literature, moving beyond reading the key sounds of the urban soundscape using urban musicology, sensorial anthropology and cultural poetics towards a literary contextualisation of the urban aural experience. The literary motifs of the symphony, the gramophone and urban noise are put under the spotlight through the analysis of a wide range of modernist works by authors who have a special relationship with music. At the centre of this analysis are the Kaffeehausliteratur authors Hermann Bahr, Alfred Polgar and Peter Altenberg, the then Munich-based author Thomas Mann and the lesser known René Schickele. The analysis of these particular works is framed in the music-geographical context of the Musikstadt and literary underpinnings of this topos, ranging from Ingeborg Bachmann to Hans Mayer and, once again, Thomas Mann. In analysing these texts, the methodological approach devised by Strohm, who identifies the blending of a range of urban sounds as a definition of urban space and identity, is applied. His ideas combine historical literary analysis, musical history and urban sociology.     This publication includes the introductory article and the translation of the source text, namely, “The Life of Swift” from The Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets (1781) by Samuel Johnson (1709–1784), a great eighteenth-century English literary critic and biographer. The author points at the paradox-like case of Samuel Johnson’s reception in Russia, with his magnum opus hasing been left untranslated into Russian. The article draws numerous examples of the unacknowledged borrowings from Johnson’s Lives made by the nineteenth-and twentieth-century Russian critics and scholars. The article highlights various aspects of Johnson’s versatile activities as a biographer and critic, an essay master and a compiler of the dictionary, a playwright and a poet, an editor and a publisher of commentaries and notes, a writer of pamphlet and letter writing, and last but not least, a good Christian who had left a collection of prayers and meditations. The article provides a detailed description of the source text in question, and defines its status among Johnson’s works and in English letters at large. The author of the article claims Johnson to be the true founder of the literary-cum-biographical-cum-critical essay eighteenth-century in England. She mentions the forthcoming publication of the first full-text translation of The Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets into Russian in the book series “Literaturnye pamyatniki,” and gives as a sample the translation of “The Life of Swift,” accompanied by notes

    Índices de conforto térmico em modelos reduzidos de galpões avícolas com diferentes materiais de cobertura

    Objetivou-se com a realização deste estudo avaliar o efeito de diferentes materiais de cobertura sobre os índices de conforto térmico (índice de temperatura de globo negro e umidade – ITGU e carga térmica radiante – CTR) em modelos reduzidos de galpões avícolas. O experimento foi conduzido na Fazenda Água Limpa (área experimental pertencente à Universidade de Brasília – UnB) durante o mês de maio de 2014. Os dados foram medidos entre 10 e 16 horas, para o intervalo de uma hora. No estudo, foram utilizados modelos reduzidos de galpões avícolas em escala de 1:10 com diferentes inclinações de telhado e materiais de cobertura. Os tratamentos utilizados foram: cobertura cerâmica com inclinação de 30º (CE30); cobertura de fibrocimento com inclinação de 15º (FC15); cobertura de PVC com inclinação de 15º (PVC15). Quanto à instrumentação, externamente às instalações, por meio de uma estação meteorológica foram dispostos equipamentos para coleta de dados de temperatura do bulbo seco (Tbs), temperatura do globo negro (Tgn), umidade relativa do ar (UR) e velocidade do vento (vv). Internamente aos modelos reduzidos, foram dispostos também equipamentos para a coleta destes mesmos dados. A partir dessas variáveis foram calculados os índices ambientais de conforto térmico ITGU e CTR. Os resultados permitiram concluir que: para o período compreendido entre 13 e 14 horas, não houve diferença estatística significativa entre os tratamentos, tanto para ITGU quanto para CTR. Para o período estudado, de acordo com os dados obtidos de ITGU e CTR, os três materiais de cobertura podem ser usados em instalações avícolas. Os valores encontrados para temperatura de bulbo seco (Tbs) e Temperatura de globo negro (Tgn) para os diferentes tratamentos possibilitam inferir que a telha cerâmica proporcionou um ambiente com melhores condições de conforto térmico. Recomenda-se a avaliação acerca da viabilidade econômica de cada material de cobertura para a escolha de um deles, além de testes em condições mais extremas de temperatura. ____________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThe objective of this study to evaluate the effect of different mulches materials on the thermal comfort indices (Black Globe Humidity Index- BGHI and Thermal Heat Load - THL). The experiment was conducted in the Fazenda Água Limpa (experimental area belonging to University of Brasilia - UnB) during May 2014. Data were measured between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. hours, for the one-hour interval. In the study, scale models of poultry sheds were used in 1:10 scale with different slopes of roof and roofing materials. The treatments were: ceramic roof with a slope of 30º (CE30); fiber cement roofs with a slope of 15º (FC15); PVC cover with an inclination of 15º (PVC15). Regarding instrumentation, outside to the facilities, via weather station equipment for data collection of dry bulb Temperature (Tbs), black globe Temperature (Tgn), Relative Humidity (UR) and wind speed (vv) were disposed. Inside the small scale models were also disposed equipment for the collection of these same data. From these variables the environmental thermal comfort indices were calculated BGHI and THL. The results showed that: for the period between 13 and 14 hours, there was no statistically significant difference between treatments for both BGHI and THL. For the study period, according to data obtained from BGHI and THL, the three mulches can be used in poultry houses. The values found for the Tbs and Tgn for the different treatments allow to infere that ceramic tile provided an environment with better thermal comfort. It is recommended to review about the economic viability of each roofing material for choosing one of them, in addition to tests in more extreme temperature conditions
