Harry S Blaine Interview
No full textHarry S. Blaine was born in Senceca County, Ohio, on June 27, 1880. He was a retired assistant superintendent of mails for the Toledo Post Office, clock and watch collector, and an author of numerous historical papers on the history and residents of the Toledo area. He gave a family history and the reasons they came to Toledo as well as a description of Toledo in 1891. He spoke of his varied careers in Toledo, including driving a wagon for a tinner in the Old West End, and jobs at the Madison and Boody House Hotels. Mr. Blaine died in Toledo at the age of 87 on May 12, 1968

Get PDFTämän opinnäytetyön ensisijaisena tavoitteena oli tallentaa keittiömestari Harry Lilienkampfin ammatillista elämäntyötä.
Tutkimusmateriaaliksi videoitiin hänen omaa kerrontaansa työskentelystä ja vaikuttajana toimimisesta hotelli- ja ravintola-alalla 1960-luvulta aina vuoteen 2012 saakka. Käytettävissä oli myös laaja kokoelma arvokasta ruokalista-, valokuva- ja kirjallista materiaalia samalta ajalta.
Tutkimustuloksena julkaistiin DVD, josta hänen tarinaansa voi seurata hänen itsensä kertomana. Kirjallisessa työssä kuvaillaan tutkimusprosessin vaiheita sekä asemoidaan Harry Lilienkampfin kertomaa kokemustietoa hotelli- ja ravintola-alan yleiseen kehitykseen eri vuosikymmenten aikana.
Tutkimusmenetelmänä oli empiirinen tutkimusmenetelmä, jonka lähestymistapa oli kvalitatiivinen. Prosessin aikana käytettiin intensiivisen tapaustutkimuksen keinoja. Materiaalin käsittelyn ja tutkimustulosten loppuunsaattamisessa käytettiin narratiivista tutkimusmetodia.The primary objective of this thesis was to capture some of the professional life`s work of the chef Harry Lilienkampf.
The research material consisted of Harry Lilienkampf`s videotaped narrative about his work and influence on the hotel and restaurant industry from 1960 until 2012.
There was also a large collection of valuable material available from the same period: menus, photographs and written materials.
The research results were published on a DVD in which his story can be followed, as told by himself. In addition, in this written work, there is a description of the stages of the research process. The experience and information from Harry Lilienkampf ´s stories are also put to the context of the overall development of the hotel and restaurant industry in different decades.
The research method was empirical and the method of approach was qualitative. During the process, intensive case study methods were used. Narrative research methods were used in material handling and in completing the research results.DVD-levy:

The margin and the mainstream : positioning Harry Partch's theories within the broader discourse of musical aesthetics
No full textBibliography: leaves 102-106.The dissertation examines the broader musical value of microtonal composer Harry Partch's musical theories by locating his critique of abstract music within mainstream compositional theory and aesthetics. This contextualisation aims to deconstruct Partch's iconoclastic image so as to understand his contribution within a wider realm of critical discourse. The work of composers that follow in Partch's footsteps becomes important in this context, especially that of his one-time student Ben Johnston whose own microtonal aesthetic is firmly rooted in European aesthetics from Debussy to Schoenberg. By a study of Johnston's utilisation of Partch's theory of just intonation the dissertation attempts to arrive at a more inclusive compositional theory, one which continues to address those aspects of Partch's theories that serve as a valid and constructive critique of traditional musical values. Taking Adorno's view that musical critique must deal with the problem of reification at the level of musical materials, the author proposes a reading of Partch's corporeal philosophy that is applicable beyond the confines of narrative musical drama. By creating a distinction between historical models of organisation and 'second nature' forms of musical presentation, it is suggested that critique does not necessarily prefigure alienation from the mainstream, but can rather be situated within musical discourse in such a way that a new image of the latter's forms results. On a practical level, the dissertation explores the validity of expanded just intonation as a means of achieving this immanent critique, both in the realm of compositional theory and, implicitly, in that of analytical theory, concluding with the description of a tuning system with the capacity to synthesise the range of compositional theories explored
