Finding Resilient and Energy-saving Control Strategies in Smart Homes
AbstractEvolutionary computing has demonstrated its effectiveness in supporting the development of robust and intelligent systems: when used in combination with formal and quantitative models, it becomes a primary tool in critical systems. Among the modern critical infrastructures, smart energy grids are getting a growing interest from many communities (academic, industrial and political) fostering the development of a robust energy distribution infrastructure. Energy grids are also an example of critical cyber physical social systems since their equilibrium can be perturbed not only by cyber and physical attacks but also by economical and social crises as well as changes in the consumption profiles. The paper illustrates a practical framework supporting the run-time evolution of the control logic inside the Smart Meter: the centre of modern Smart Homes. By combining the modeling and analysis capabilities of Fluid Stochastic Petri Nets and the flexibility of Genetic Programming, this approach can be used to adapt the control logic of the Smart Meters to the changes of the structure and functionalities of the Smart Home as well as of the operational environment. While the main objective of the evolution is to guarantee the energetic sustainability of the Smart Home, the fulfilment of the user's requirements about the energetic need of the home allows to preserve the identity of the Smart Meter during its evolution
Low-Power Wide-Area Networks in Intelligent Transportation: Review and Opportunities for Smart-Railways
The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art in LPWAN, with a focus on intelligent transportation. IoT and LPWAN technologies appear as very promising for cost-effective remote surveillance, monitoring and control over large geographical areas, by collecting data for several sensing applications (e.g., predictive condition-based maintenance, security early warning and situation awareness, etc.) even in situations where power supply is limited (e.g., solar panels) or absent (e.g., installation on-board freight cars).

Italian semiologist Gianfranco Marrone has just published a new book on the semiotics of gastronomy. The book, in Italian, is part of the ‘Campo Aperto’ series edited by Stefano Bartezzaghi for the publisher Bompiani. Rather than choosing a predictable title such as ‘Semiotics of Gastronomy’, the author has opted for a title defined in the pages of the book as ‘referential’.Le nouvel ouvrage du sémiologue italien Gianfranco Marrone sur la sémiotique de la gastronomie vient d’être publié. Le livre, en italien, fait partie de la série « Campo Aperto » dirigée par Stefano Bartezzaghi pour l’éditeur Bompiani. Plutôt que de choisir un titre prévisible tel que « Sémiotique de la gastronomie », l’auteur a opté pour un titre défini dans les pages du livre comme « référentiel »
Towards a novel conceptualization of Cyber Resilience
The article revises the different views and conceptualizations for cyber resilience and proposes a novel holistic definition able to accommodate in a unique coherent vision the existing multiple facets. The resulting integrated concept has been formalisied defining a new comprehensive domain-based ontology for Cyber Resilience to be used as a knowledge base for an effective data driven multi-criteria decision making for resilience
