A pattern-based architectural style for self-organizing software systems

    No full text
In this chapter, Jose Luis Fernandez-Marquez et al. propose an approach to engineering self-organizing software systems toward self-adaptation and resilience from an architectural point of view. They argue that the adaptation of complete systems is different from the adaptation of single components within the systems and propose an architectural approach based on patterns. Besides adaptation, the authors also claim to achieve resilience by leveraging the capabilities of self-organizing systems, which are able to modify themselves in order to continue providing their functionality even in the face of unexpected situations

Review Of The General In His Labyrinth By G. G. Marquez, Translated By E. Grossman

    No full text
When this novel by Colombia\u27s Nobel laureate first appeared in Spanish in 1989 it caused a heated controversy among the author\u27s Latin American compatriots. In general, Latin Americans tended to be infuriated by the worldly and extremely realistic treatment of Simon Bolivar, their Great Liberator and hero in the campaign against the Spanish in the last century\u27s wars for independence. The novel recounts General Bolivar\u27s final journey down the Magdalena River as he prepares to leave a continent that has rejected his dream of unification. In narrating the general\u27s journey down the river and into eventual exile, Garcia Marquez masterfully weaves memory with scenes from the present, juxtaposing the general\u27s own existential labyrinth with that awaiting the continent he had hoped to unify. This text, like many of its predecessors, is an extraordinary study of the solitude of power, of the deterioration of body and spirit, of loss and disillusion, and of the inevitability of death. In it Garcia Marquez has created one of his most intriguing literary characters. The translation by Edith Grossman, who also did Love in the Time of Cholera (CH, Sep\u2788), is superb. Recommended for all libraries

Determination of effective temperatures of hydrogenated and deuterated alcohols using the VESUVIO spectrometer

    No full text
We studied the effective temperatures of hydrogen and deuterium in normal 1-propanol, 2-propanol and n-butanol and fully deuterated 2-propanol and n-butanol at the VESUVIO spectrometer (ISIS Pulsed Neutron and Muon Source, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK). We found that the effective temperature of H (D) is about 3.9 (2.9) times higher than room temperature, where the experiments were performed. The results from the present analysis were compared to the results from the standard data treatment available in the MANTID software for DINS data, and to results from Molecular Dynamics simulations. We find that the final results obtained following these independent routes agree within few points per cent. We also provide a detailed discussion on how to handle experimental backgrounds, the need to analyze groups of detectors to increase the signal-to-background ratio, and we suggest a range of scattering angles for which the analysis is more robust.Fil: Dawidowski, Javier. Self-management of self-organising mobile computing applications : a separation of concerns approach

    No full text
Although the research area of self-organising systems is well established, their construction is often ad hoc. Consequently, such software is difficult reuse across applications that require similar functionality of have similar goals. The development of self-organising applications and, a fortiori, self-organising mobile applications is therefore limited to developers who are experts in specific self-organising mechanisms. As a first step towards addressing this, this paper discusses the notion of self-organising mechanisms provided as services for building higher level functionality in a modular way. This eases reuse and thus provides separation of concerns. Additionally, because of the dynamic and heterogeneous nature of mobile networks, services need to adapt themselves in order to ensure both functional and non-functional requirements. This paper discusses whether the self-management of self-organising mobile applications can be achieved in a modular fashion, via the self-management of low level self-organising services it employs, rather than considering the management of the complex system as a whole. We empirically investigate two non-functional aspects: resource optimisation and accuracy
