    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Teor foliar de silício em Brassica napus e Brassica juncea fertilizadas com silicato de cálcio

    Canola is the third most produced oilseed in the world and is an excellent option for the second crop in central Brazil. The insertion of canola in the crop rotation makes it possible to break the phytopathogen cycle of the most used crops for grain production, such as corn and soybean. Silicon is a beneficial element for the development of various plant species, and increases plant resistance against biotic and abiotic stresses. This study evaluated the uptake of silicon in the species Brassica napus and Brassica juncea. The experiment was done in randomized block design, as a 2x3 factorial with two species (B. napus and B. juncea) and three fertilization doses (0 kg ha-1 of Si, 2000 kg ha-1 of Si and equivalent dose in calcium carbonate), and eight replicates per treatment. The Si content in the leaves (%) was evaluated. Data were submitted to analysis of variance by the test F and the averages compared by the Tukey test at 5% probability. Silicon fertilization provided greater levels of Si in the leaves of the species used in the study, with the greatest content in B. juncea compared to B. napus. The contents of Si in the leaves were similar to those found in dicotyledonous plants of other families.Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso (Graduação)A canola é terceira espécie oleaginosa mais produzida no mundo e é uma excelente opção para a segunda safra na região central do Brasil. A inserção da canola na rotação de culturas possibilita a quebra do ciclo dos fitopatógenos das culturas mais utilizadas para a produção de grãos, como milho e soja. O silício é um elemento benéfico para o desenvolvimento de várias espécies vegetais, e aumenta a resistência das plantas contra estresses bióticos e abióticos. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a absorção de silício nas espécies Brassica napus e Brassica juncea. O delineamento utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 2x3, com duas espécies (B. napus e B. juncea) e três adubações (0 kg ha-1 de Si, 2000 kg ha-1 de Si e dose equivalente em carbonato de cálcio), e oito repetições por tratamento. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância pelo teste F e as médias comparadas pelo teste de Tukey à 5% de probabilidade. Foi avaliado o teor de Si nas folhas (%). A adubação de silício proporcionou maiores teores de Si na folha das espécies utilizadas no estudo, com maior teor na espécie B. juncea comparado à B. napus. Os teores de Si na folha foram semelhantes aos encontrados em plantas dicotiledôneas de outras famílias

    Management of dicamba: good practices in tank cleanout and injury evaluation by vegetation index

    The use of dicamba-resistant soybean cultivars will raise concerns about the movement of this herbicide to sensitive crop areas by means of particle drift, vapor drift and the use of sprayer that contains herbicide residue. Because it is a hormonal herbicide, low concentrations are sufficient to cause injury, and this will require greater precision in identifying and predicting damage to plants. The objectives of this work were: (i) to evaluate the dicamba residue during the cleaning process of sprayers with tanks of different materials (fiberglass and polyethylene), and the effects of this residue on non-dicamba resistant soybean; and (ii) to evaluate the damage caused by simulated dicamba drift in soybean culture visually and using the Triangular Greenness Index (TGI) response in images obtained by remotely-piloted aircraft (RPA). The work was divided into two stages. The first consisted of the analysis of the dicamba residue and the spraying of the water collected in the four rinses during the decontamination of the soybean sprayers in the V3 stage. The residue analysis was performed in DIC, with three replications and a 2 x 4 factorial scheme (tank material and number of rinses), using High Efficiency Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The assessment of the risk of injury by the residue was performed in DBC, with four repetitions and a 2 x 4 + 1 (tank material, number of rinses and a control without application) factorial scheme. The fiberglass sprayer retained more residue only on the first rinse. The dicamba was effectively removed with three rinses, regardless of the material of the tank. Injury and reduced yield were observed by applying the first and second rinses. In the second part, six doses of the herbicide (0; 0.28; 0.56; 5.6; 28 and 112 g a.e. dicamba ha-1) were applied to soybean at stage V3 in DBC with four replications. For the application of the TGI, spectral data acquired with an RGB sensor embedded in a RPA was used. The assessment of injuries caused by dicamba can be performed using the TGI vegetation index, with the ability to assess large areas in a less subjective way than visual assessment.CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível SuperiorDissertação (Mestrado)O uso de cultivares de soja resistente ao dicamba gera preocupações sobre o movimento deste herbicida para áreas de culturas sensíveis por meio da deriva de partícula, deriva de vapor e com o uso de pulverizadores que contenham resíduo do herbicida. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram: (i) avaliar o resíduo de dicamba durante o processo de descontaminação de pulverizadores com tanques de diferentes materiais (fibra de vidro e polietileno) e os efeitos desse resíduo na soja não resistente ao dicamba; e (ii) avaliar a injúria causada pela deriva simulada do dicamba na cultura da soja visualmente e utilizando a resposta do índice de vegetação Triangular Greenness Index (TGI) em imagens obtidas por aeronave remotamente pilotada (RPA). O trabalho foi dividido em duas etapas. A primeira consistiu na análise do resíduo de dicamba e na pulverização da água coletada nos quatro enxágues durante a descontaminação dos pulverizadores em soja no estádio V3. A análise do resíduo foi realizada em DIC, com três repetições e esquema fatorial 2 x 4 (material do tanque e número de enxágues), utilizando Cromatografia Líquida de Alta Eficiência (CLAE). A avaliação do risco de injúria pelo resíduo foi realizada em DBC com quatros repetições e esquema fatorial 2 x 4 +1 (material do tanque, número de enxágues e testemunha sem aplicação). O pulverizador com tanque em fibra de vidro reteve mais resíduos apenas no primeiro enxágue. O dicamba foi removido efetivamente com três enxágues, independentemente do material do tanque. Injúria e redução de produtividade foram observadas pela aplicação do primeiro e segundo enxágues. Na segunda parte realizou-se a aplicação de seis doses do herbicida (0; 0,28; 0,56; 5,6; 28 e 112 g e.a. dicamba ha-1) em soja no estádio V3 em DBC com quatro repetições. Para a aplicação do TGI, utilizaram-se dados espectrais adquiridos com sensor RGB embarcado em RPA. A avaliação da injúria por dicamba pode ser realizada pelo índice de vegetação TGI com a capacidade de avaliar grandes áreas de forma menos subjetiva que a avaliação visual.2023-02-0

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
