Why do European citizens support populism?:A comparative study of demand-side and supply-side explanations.
European democracies have witnessed the progressive affirmation of populist parties in the last two decades. This thesis draws from the suggestions of the theoretical literature on populism to study why Europeancitizens support populist parties. In doing so, the aim of this thesis is twofold: on the one hand, it applies the ideational approach to populism to investigate support for populism from a comparative perspective; on the other hand, it seeks to understand how demandside and supply-side factors contribute to explaining the cross-country andtemporalheterogeneityintheirelectoralperformances. Thisthesis focuses on two demand-side factors (i.e., social marginalisation and sociotropic concerns about economy) and two factors of the supplyside (i.e., liberal institutional arrangements and party competition). Theresults show that, first, populist parties attract significant support fromcitizens perceiving socially marginalised, especially in wealthy and globalised contexts; whereas sociotropic concerns about economy do not lead to higher support for populism. Second, liberal institutional arrangements increase the anti-institutional appeal of populist parties; whereas party competition on a core element of the far-right populist ideology (nativism) does not affect support for far-right populism to a great extent. This thesis shows that an approach that integrates both demandandsupplyside perspectives is beneficial to understand the reasons underlying support for populism
Application of the Lean A3 instrument to the management pathway of elderly patients with femur fracture: The case study of a Puglia hospital
Despite numerous articles reporting the application of Lean in the health sector, the methodologies to implementing the paradigm in hospitals are described in few articles. Most of the research focuses more on the results of the Lean approach than on the approach itself. Embarking on continuous improvement by navigating without compass and without guidelines can be frustrating and in the best case could lead to silver bullet solution, spending resources without generating the “culture of change” or increasing the ability to “project management”. The purpose of this paper is to describe the case study of a Puglia hospital in which a Lean project was activated to the clinical pathway of patients over sixty-five with fracture of the femur. The originality is to detail the framework to support Lean implementation and offer a guideline to practitioners. The project was implemented through the Report A3, involving a hospital team work and an external consultant. The results show a reduction in the rate of the patients who cannot undergo surgery in 48 hours and the spreading of continuous improvement culture in the organizatio
World Class Manufacturing in Make-To-Order batch-production SMEs: an exploratory analysis in Northern Italy
The applicability of World Class Manufacturing (WCM) in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) is a hotly debated topic. This paper belongs to this stream of research and presents a statistical survey designed to assess which WCM practices, if any, are implemented by SMEs and their effects on operational performances. Specifically, a comprehensive questionnaire was submitted to a sample of North Italian Make-To-Order batch-production SMEs, in the furniture, precision mechanics and textile-fashion industries. To assure consistency, and to avoid subjective interpretations, practices included in the questionnaire were adequately contextualized and answers were measured with an innovative five points Likert-type scale. Outcomes, relative to the reference domain, demonstrate that SMEs can overcome quality-cost-time tradeoffs, using an integrated set of WCM practices. Results also indicate that belonging to a formal business group is a powerful enabler for a successful implementation of WCM, in SMEs
Factors affecting technology transfer offices’ performance in the Italian food context
In recent years growing attention has been devoted to the commercialization of knowledge and technologies developed by universities and public research institutions. A central role in this particular process is played by the technology transfer offices, which are on the one hand in charge of promoting the transfer of knowledge and technology to external companies, and on the other hand are also responsible for protecting and licensing the intellectual property of the research organization. This paper is focused on a technology transfer office operating in the food context, with the specific objectives of identifying the performance indicators and the main factors affecting its performance and, finally, analysing the relationships among these factors. The academic and managerial implications derived from this analysis are discussed to stimulate both future research and better technology transfer office management
THE ORGANIZATIONAL DESIGN OF TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER OFFICES: DRAWING FROM AN ANALYSIS IN THE “FOOD VALLEY” OF PARMA
In today’s environments, both academics and practitioners recognise the importance of collaborations between university and industry, and thus of technology transfer activities in general. The extant literature highlights that different aspects can affect the outcome of such collaborations, among them the organisational design of technology transfer offices. Based on these premises, the aim of this paper is to map Parma University’s external relations in food science and technology-related disciplines and to uncover the nature of its knowledge exchanges and its collaborations network. This would shed some light about Parma University own entrepreneurial orientation and provide some organisational guidelines for the forthcoming TTO which is, at present, still in its “infancy” stage
Which factors are perceived as obstacles for the growth of Italian academic spin-offs?
During the last decades, academic spin-offs have received increasing attention from both researchers and practitioners, mainly due to their ability to advance industrial application of scientific knowledge. In the past, scholars believed that these organisations were subjected to fast growth after their establishment. Only in the last decade, scholars realise that the fast-growing perspective hypothesised was an oversimplification, as the majority of high-tech academic spin-offs growth slowly or remain small in size for long time. The aim of our study is to investigate the reasons that inhibit the growth of established academic spin-offs, focusing on the Italian context. Through the implementation of the Delphi technique and of the fuzzy logic we derive new and relevant results, for scholars, spin-offs’ managers and policy-makers
