    Experimental dataset of U-folded falling chain under various openings with high-speed imaging

    A folded chain hanged by its two ends in U-shape at the same level with an opening, distance, between its two tips is known as U-folded chain, as studied in Markou et al. (2023). When one of the tips is fixed and the other one is released, the free tip of the U-folded falling chain accelerates faster than gravity, due to momentum conservation. This counterintuitive fact has long excited mechanicians around the globe. In the current paper we present a group of datasets (tip's coordinate timeseries), comprising three different subsets of this variable-mass dynamical system. A series of experiments of a U-folded falling chain of length 1.51m with total mass 31 gm, have been recorded with a high-speed imaging (2000fps) (Markou et al., 2023). The distance between the tips of the chain (opening) varies throughout the experimental session series: (i) 0.045m, (ii) 0.087m and (iii) 0.128m. Three timeseries of the tip's coordinates (x,y) have been extracted using an edge detector based method, from the recorded high-speed videos

    The Role of Agricultural Subsides in Shaping the Population Growth in Rural Communities in Greece

    This study introduces a different perspective on the depopulation challenge in Greek communities, emphasizing in the influence of agricultural subsidies on population growth rate in rural areas. Census reports exposed a consis- tent decline in the Greek population, accompanied by the abandonment of the agricultural sector and the trend of urbanization. The research adopts a mixed methods approach, employing linear regression models to quantify the relationship between subsidy growth and population growth through Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) estimation. The findings indicate a positive correlation between subsidies and population growth, along with a negative impact as- sociated with the altitude of a community. A classification method is also used, specifically the K-Means algorithm, in order group the communities and investigate the similar behavior. For the first time, this study examines the behavior of island communities from the perspective of agricultural subsidiza- tion, uncovering distinct behaviors compared to mainland regions. Finally, the elasticity of population concerning agricultural subsidies (efficiency index) for each community is computed and compared with the neighbor possessing the longest border length among all neighbors associated with each community. Using this approach, it is found that communities with the most substantial reduction are likely to experience the most significant increase in population growth.7

Through simulation and test implementation on a state-of-the-art programmable ADSL development platform, this thesis pursues a suitable solution for minimizing PAR given the resources of a programmable platform.     Oxidative-Stress-Mediated Epigenetic Dysregulation in Spermatogenesis: Implications for Male Infertility and Offspring Health

    Male reproductive health is governed by an intricate interplay of genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors. Epigenetic mechanisms-encompassing DNA methylation, histone modifications, and non-coding RNA activity-are crucial both for spermatogenesis and sperm maturation. However, oxidative stress, driven by excessive reactive oxygen species, disrupts these processes, leading to impaired sperm function and male infertility. This disruption extends to epigenetic modifications, resulting in abnormal gene expression and chromatin remodeling that compromise genomic integrity and fertilization potential. Importantly, oxidative-stress-induced epigenetic alterations can be inherited, affecting the health and fertility of offspring and future generations. This review investigates how oxidative stress influences epigenetic regulation in male reproduction by modifying DNA methylation, histone modifications, and non-coding RNAs, ultimately compromising spermatogenesis. Additionally, it discusses the transgenerational implications of these epigenetic disruptions and their potential role in hereditary infertility and disease predisposition. Understanding these mechanisms is vital for developing therapeutic strategies that mitigate oxidative damage and restore epigenetic homeostasis in the male germline. By integrating insights from molecular, clinical, and transgenerational research, this work emphasizes the need for targeted interventions to enhance male reproductive health and prevent adverse outcomes in progeny. Furthermore, elucidating the dose-response relationships between oxidative stress and epigenetic changes remains a critical research priority, informing personalized diagnostics and therapeutic interventions. In this context, future studies should adopt standardized markers of oxidative damage, robust clinical trials, and multi-omic approaches to capture the complexity of epigenetic regulation in spermatogenesis.     Torsion as a design driver for structures and architecture

    Twisted forms, with origins dating back to ancient times, have a prominent presence in architectural history, embodying both aesthetic appeal and structural complexity. This thesis bridges architecture and engineering disciplines to examine a beam element assembled from four thin plywood strips under large rotational and translational deformations, resulting in a unique twisted form. The central question guiding our exploration is whether such flexibly twisted members can enhance structural performance, while embracing their aesthetic values. This research touches on many related viewpoints, including the architectural, artistic, engineering, and pedagogical perspectives, as documented by publications, and showcased by several experimental full-scale structures and exhibitions. The geometry of the twisted beam is derived from the intentional deformation of a thin-walled square tube, where each strip of the tube is hinged-joined along its longitudinal edges. The equilibrium geometry of the beam emerges through a delicate interplay between material, its properties, and physical rules within defined boundary conditions, as a case for self-organized form. The resulting geometry has been presented as a novel cantilever beam, utilizing elastic torsion for structures and architecture [Pub. I], and as a structural element compared with standardized profiles [Pub. II]. Given the observed large deformations, it was crucial to ascertain the residual stress state before proceeding with any subsequent architectural application. In this light, the plywood strip has investigated in detail by considering each individual ply. Furthermore, a parametric model has employed that highlights the potential significant effects of minor changes in the strip's geometric parameters on its overall performance, underlining the geometrically nonlinear behaviour of actively twisted and bent plywood [Pub. III]. Full-scale prototypes provide insights into practical challenges and advantages of the chosen methods, processes, and material, demonstrating its lightness in its applications in a kinematic pavilion [Pub. V], its rapid assembly from identical strips, and utilising standard stock material, while minimizing material waste by applying a simple cutting pattern. Built pavilions showcase how the presented lightweight beam element can be applied to ephemeral architectural scale structures [Pub. IV], as well as elevating it from a mere object to an integral part of a holistic, experimental architectural narrative. They highlight the non-tangible aspects of architecture. Through the presentation of concepts such as harnessing unconventional structural materials like plywood, the reduction of material consumption through an exploration of equilibrium geometries, and the emphasis on the significance of assembly logic, we aspire to influence the current mindset, with a view to positively shaping the future of the building sector, society, and the environment

ABSTRACT: The decision of the ECtHR of 31.08.2023, Amvrosios-Athanasios Lenis v. Greece (no. 47833/20), is a further step toward an increasingly dense jurisprudence on “hate speech” and the limits of freedom of expression. The public proclamation of religious doctrines that are in conflict with the values of the contracting States enshrined in the ECHR is protected to a certain extent by the fundamental right of freedom of religion and belief. However, the qualification of a statement as religious does not justify “hate speech.” The AUTHOR shows the tension between freedom of religion, freedom of expression, and protection against discrimination, and analyzes the decision against the backdrop of Article 17 of the ECHR (prohibition of abuse of rights).
