Dancing Madly
In Beth Mead’s stories, as in our own, human relationships are conditional, negotiable, and so knotty we can’t tell whether we are fooling ourselves or being fooled. The characters in Dancing Madly are learning to limit their hopes and expectations. This lesson terrorizes some and hardens or saddens others. Still others emerge as from a chrysalis. —Catherine Rankovic, author of Meet Me: Writers in St. Loui
New uncertainties of Serbia in Kosmet: The post-DOS period
"The new Kosmet dossier" makes the framework of this paper. The chronicle of events showed that nothing significant changed in Kosmet. There remained uncertainties, emigration continued (of the Serbs and other non-Albanians) and the obstruction of the "return" project, all under the auspices of the heads of the civil administration and UNMIK. The second part of the paper is mostly thematic and prognostic. The author first analyzed numerous standpoints expressed in the public debate lasting several months about the future of Kosmet. He developed his predictions on the basis of a "situation-al framework", "satelitization" and the apperance of the new "post-industrial vassalage". These phenomena, that is developmental trends on the waves of globalization and de-sovereignization, are at the periphery of the world, Europe and the Balkans. There lies the knot for "the lasting solution of the Kosovo crisis".</jats:p
Variational calculation of the vibronic spectrum in the X2Пu electronic state of C6-
A variational approach for ab initio handling of the Renner?Teller effect in six-atomic molecules with linear equilibrium geometry is elaborated. A very simple model Hamiltonian suitable for the description of small-amplitude bending vibrations in ? electronic states of arbitrary spin multiplicity was employed. The computer program developed within the framework of the present study was tested on the example of the X 2?u state of C6 ?. The results are compared with those generated in corresponding perturbative calculations.</jats:p
E-EDUCATION IN ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT
This paper discusses the major features of e-learning systems used by higher education institutions. A short historical overview provides the necessary perspectives and introduces the subjects of distance learning and e-learning. Major system features are further analyzed and concepts of content personalization and system standardization are given as technical constructs. Elements of further possibilities are displayed at the conclusion of this paper.
The impact of the functional characteristics of a credit bureau on the level of indebtedness per capita: Evidence from East European countries
The institution of the credit bureau is one of the most important elements in controlling the indebtedness levels of a population. All credit bureaus have specific functional characteristics which are able to influence the development of indebtedness. This research aims to identify the most important characteristics of a credit bureau, to quantify those characteristics and to identify causal relationships between the characteristics of the credit bureau and trends in indebtedness per capita levels. The paper introduces the Credit Bureau Functional Index which presents a quantified value of the functional characteristics of the Credit Bureau. The paper establishes a correlation between this index and indebtedness per capita and finds the formula governing this relationship to be linear. The paper concludes that indebtedness levels can be targeted through a mix of characteristics of a credit bureau. Research on this theme is absent in academic literature to date.credit bureau, credit information, personal indebtedness, coverage ratio, functional characteristic
Critical Success Factors in IT Project Management. Case study on IT Banking Front-end IT System Project in Serbia
The success of project management in organizations depends on the context, that is, on type of organization, type of projects they implement, the environment and the conditions for the realization of projects. What matters to the textual issues of project success is due to a number of factors - type of project, importance for organization, resources, and the like. Insufficient number of organizations successfully managed to implement project manager procedures, while others met with a large number of problems, the resistance of employees first of all, ignorance, lack of resources, bad time management and other issues. Organizations must have an incremental approach to the development and implementation of their project management methodologies, especially when it comes to implementing information technology project, that involve a great deal of human-work, innovation and usually cost a lot, development takes a long time, they are based on the knowledge of new technologies, and their success depends on the people who develop them, and those who will use those IT products and services. This is a great challenge for management in terms of use of information technology, budget and planning, involvement of the project team and establishment of support from the environment. Many IT projects are not implemented successfully because of poor application of project management procedures, lack of stakeholder support, absence of project sponsor etc.

The effects of methanol extract of Galium verum L on cardiac redox state in hypertensive rats
The aim of this study was to assess the effects of methanol extract of G. verum on redox status of isolated heart of spontaneously hypertensive rats after ischemia. Twenty-four Wistar albino rats were divided into three groups: untreated control rats and rats that received 125 and 250 mg/kg G. verum extract for 4 weeks per os. Index of lipid peroxidation (measured as TBARS) and parameters of antioxidative defence system such as level of reduced glutathione (GSH) and activities of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were spectrophotometrically determined in heart homogenate. The index of lipid peroxidation in heart tissue was lower in both treated groups compared to the control group. On the other hand, the activity of SOD was significantly higher after consumption of both doses, while the activity of CAT was significantly higher only after treatment with a higher dose of extract. Based on our results we might conclude that 4-week treatment with methanol extracts of G. verum has the potential to modulate myocardial redox signaling after ischemia, thus significantly alleviating cardiac oxidative stress and exerting dose-dependent antioxidant properties. Future studies are certainly necessary to fully clarify the role of this plant species in myocardial I-R injury
Expression dynamics of hsa-miR-18a-5p and hsa-miR-135b-5p are associated with pathological tumor stage and lymph node status in locally advanced rectal cancer patients undergoing neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy
Locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) is characterized by tumor invasion into surrounding tissues and frequent lymph node involvement, often requiring neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) followed by surgical resection. LARC presents a significant therapeutic challenge because it is typically diagnosed at an advanced stage and shows variable responses to standard nCRT, highlighting the need for predictive biomarkers. microRNAs are considered valuable biomarker candidates due to their biological characteristics. We investigated the expression dynamics of hsa-miR-18a-5p and hsa-miR-135b-5p and their predictive potential for response to nCRT. We demonstrate a significant post-nCRT decrease in tumor expression of hsa-miR-18a-5p. High pre-treatment hsa-miR-18a-5p expression was significantly associated with lower post-treatment pathological stage and absence of lymph node metastasis, indicating potential predictive value. The expression of hsa-miR-135b-5p after therapy was associated with advanced disease stage and positive lymph node status, indicating it may be linked to more aggressive disease after the treatment. Despite these associations with tumor characteristics, neither miRNA showed a significant association with therapy response. Our findings suggest that while hsa-miR-18a-5p and hsa-miR-135b-5p are not predictive of nCRT response, their expression patterns before and after therapy may reflect underlying tumor biology and hold potential for LARC patient stratification.M220.833330
