Complete criticism of Joseph d’Ortigues
So far the collection contains three of six phases of the project: all essays and reviews written by Joseph d'Ortigue between 1829 and 1832 in L'Avenir (1830-31), Le Correspondant (1829-31), Le Courrier de l'Europe (1831-2), L'Écho de Vaucluse (1828-9) and Le Mémorial catholique (1827-1829), Journal de Paris and Le ménestrel. Extracts from some of the articles in L’Avenir were reprinted in Le Balcon de l'Opera (Paris: Renduel, 1833). Phases 4 - 6 will follow. D’Ortigue’s writings were collected by Sylvia L’Écuyer (Université de Montréal). The edition was prepared by Rachel Moore (Royal Holloway, University of London), Laura Hamer (Open University) and Aurélie Branger (Paris), under the direction of Sarah Hibberd (University of Nottingham), Clair Rowden (Cardiff University) and Mark Everist (University of Southampton), and supported by a SAS Initiatives grant
A conversation with Jack Hibberd
Jack Hibberd was a leading figure in the “New Wave of Australian theater during the 1960s, and is the author of several plays, including Three Old Friends (1967), Dimboola (1969), and A Stretch of the Imagination (1972), as well as adaptations of Gogol, Brecht, and de Maupassant. He has also written three novels, Memoirs of an Old Bastard (1989), The Life of Riley (1990), and Perdita (1992). A physician, Hibberd works in his medical practice and continues to write
Measurement of strains experienced by viscerofugal nerve cell bodies during mechanosensitive firing using Digital Image Correlation
Mechanosensory neurons detect physical events in the local environments of the tissues that they innervate. Studies of mechanosensitivity of neurons or nerve endings in the gut have related their firing to strain, wall tension or pressure. Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is a technique from materials engineering that can be adapted to measure the local physical environments of afferent neurons at high resolution. Flat sheet preparations of guinea pig distal colon were set up with arrays of tissue markers, in vitro. Firing of single viscerofugal neurons was identified in extracellular colonic nerve recordings. The locations of viscerofugal nerve cell bodies were inferred by mapping firing responses to focal application of the nicotinic receptor agonist, DMPP. Mechanosensory firing was recorded during load-evoked uni-axial or bi-axial distensions. Distension caused movement of surface markers which was captured using video imaging. DIC tracked the markers, interpolating the mechanical state of the gut at the location of the viscerofugal nerve cell body. This technique revealed heterogeneous load-evoked strain within preparations. Local strains at viscerofugal nerve cell bodies were usually smaller than global strain measurements and correlated more closely with mechanosensitive firing. Both circumferential and longitudinal strain activated viscerofugal neurons. Simultaneous loading in circumferential and longitudinal axes, caused the highest levels of viscerofugal neuron firing. Multiaxial strains, reflecting tissue shearing and changing area, linearly correlated with mechanosensory firing of viscerofugal neurons. Viscerofugal neurons were mechanically sensitive to both local circumferential and local longitudinal gut strain, and appear to lack directionality in their stretch sensitivity
Evolution, phylogeny and classification of Suctorea (Ciliophora)
The monograph is concerned with suctorian ciliates. Using the materials collected
and generalizing all literary data available, the author has proposed original hypotheses
of suctorians’ origin and the main regularities of the evolution of the taxa. A new scheme
of phylogeny of Suctorea has also been elaborated. Based on this research a new system
of the class Suctorea, including 4 subclasses, 15 orders, 2 suborders, 41 families and
124 genera, has been proposed
Courage
(Color) This postcard displays an image of seven Allied flags (United Kingdom, France, Russia, Belgium, Serbia, Italy, and Japan) with an accompanying poem to encourage the soldiers and folks back home to "Just Keep On!" The back indicates that the text author produces the poems herself out of a hotel, and proceeds go to the "Comforts for the Wounded at the Army Nursing Homes, Folkestone." This card is uninscribed and unposted. This collection previously belonged to Dominic Hibberd, an English biographer most noted for the biographies of Wilfred Owen and Harold Monro, World War I poets. He collected these postcards for research purposes
Cheer Up!
(Color) Four poem stanzas written as doses I-IV, in accordance with the poem's subtitle, "A Dose of Optimism." The red, white, and blue medicine bottle reads "Optimism The Does to be Taken as Required" and a British Flag is pinned into the cork stopper. A message on the back informs potential buyers of the card to obtain them directly from the author, Jule Critten at her residence. A study of the melodramatic use of Mahler's First and Second Symphonies in the ballet 'Dracula' by Mark Godden and its screen re-working as 'Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary' by Guy Maddi
This group of researchers has individually worked on research in a number of different fields. In this book, they have decided to put together a guide to audience research for the Italian-speaking market. Their point of departure is their view that although there are books that look at research methodologies and at research on the audience, most of these do not ask the question: How does one undertake research on the audience? In addition, there are few publications that consider research on the audiences for different media, they believe. Here they try to address the lack they perceive.
The book is divided into four parts, each of which considers research. Professor Michele Sorice, has written the second. He considers both the theoretical background of research and how these theories can be put into practice. Sorice does not write that these are definitive means, but that consideration of them may assist the researcher to construct his or her own research methodologies and practices. The author reflects on those questions that present themselves to the researcher, for example: when, for instance, is it better to undertake an in-depth interview rather than a structured questionnaire? If the decision is taken to use questionnaires, how does one administer such research tools? If one decides to use focus groups-who should be invited to take part and how should one run it
