This interview was conducted as part of the Winthrop History Project, an initiative led by Winthrop President Emeritus Dr. Anthony DiGiorgio and Rebecca Masters. The project aimed to document Winthrop’s transformation over Dr. DiGiorgio’s 24-year tenure, tracing the institution’s evolution from Winthrop College to Winthrop University. Designed to supplement Dr. Ross Webb’s The Torch is Passed, which chronicles Winthrop’s history up to Dr. DiGiorgio’s presidency, this project sought to provide a comprehensive account of this significant period.
A key component of the initiative was a series of recorded interviews with members of the extended Winthrop community who played a role in shaping the university’s progress. These firsthand narratives preserve the voices, experiences, and perspectives of those who contributed to Winthrop’s growth and development.
This particular interview features Mark Christopher “Chris” Rhodes, a Rock Hill native who attended Winthrop from 1986 to 1991. Adaptive control of functionally uncertain systems
In this thesis we develop performance bounds for adaptive control designs applicable to functionally uncertain systems in either the affine, strict feedback and output feedback normal forms. L2, weighted L2, L∞ and weighted L∞ models of uncertainty are introduced. These allow us to specify the uncertainty in the system independently of the model structure chosen for the adaptive controller. A modified LQR cost functional, incorporating both control effort and state terms, is introduced and its interpretation is discussed. The main results bound this cost functional in terms of the uncertainty models for a class of Lyapunov based adaptive controllers. One class of results shows that a finite dimensional model suffices for stabilization given a sufficiently large adaptation gain. A second class of results considers global uncertainties. It is shown that unless the adaptation rate is faster than the uncertainty growth, instability may occur. An unbounded adaptive rate structure is described which allows global results to be given, using a special class of physically realisable global models, under the assumption that the uncertainty growth is known, but not the uncertainty level. An example is given of a standard spline network based controller whose performance degrades as the resolution of the model increases. We then give a sufficient condition on the model for the performance to be asymptotically bounded independent of the size of the model. Under further L∞ assumptions on the uncertainty model, we construct a control schema which has the required performance scalability. It is argued that average case performance costs are more natural than worst case costs for the adaptive designs, and it is shown how the average case performance costs can be estimated from the worst case bounds. The open problem of a structurally adaptive scheme which is stable in the absence of smoothness information is also solved.</p
MicroRNA Expression Profiling of Hypoxic Cardiomyocytes Treated with Oxygenated Perfluorocarbon Nanobubbles Invitro.
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are non-coding RNAs responsible for post-transcriptional gene expression regulation through interaction with messenger RNAs (mRNAs). The dataset is the miRNA expression profile of the in-vitro study performed to evaluate oxygenated perfluorocarbon nanobubbles' ability to protect the cardiomyocytes from hypoxia-related cardiomyocytic injury. The results were compared with cardiomyocytes in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) under normoxia conditions and also after hypoxia (5% O2) treatment. The dataset describes miRNA profiling of cardiomyocytes when treated with and without perfluorocarbon nanobubbles. The data represents the list of miRNA assay and the fold changes. The cardiomyocytes were subjected to severe hypoxia with and without perfluorocarbon nanobubbles for 3.5 hours, and the miRNA expression profiling was performed. This is to mimic acute myocardial infarction milieu, invitro. The miRNA data is especially useful for researchers working on novel biomarkers in acute myocardial infarction or in heart failure/ cardiovascular diseases. The function of the perfluorocarbon nanobubbles could be further enhanced by vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) or RGD conjugations.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.
