    No full text
First Person is a series of interviews with the first authors of a selection of papers published in Journal of Cell Science, helping early-career researchers promote themselves alongside their papers. Melanie Ridgway is first author on ‘ Analysis of sex-specific lipid metabolism in Plasmodium falciparum points to importance of sphingomyelin for gametocytogenesis’, published in JCS. Melanie conducted the research described in this article while a PhD candidate in Alexander Maier's lab at Biomedical Science and Biochemistry, Research School of Biology, Australian National University, Australia. She is now a postdoc in the lab of David Horn at Wellcome Centre for Anti-Infectives Research, Biological Chemistry and Drug Discovery, University of Dundee, Dundee, UK, investigating the cell biology of unicellular parasites

    Open Hypermedia and Streaming Audio

    No full text
Audio media is one of the most neglected areas in the Hypermedia / Multimedia domain. To play sound files in traditional hypermedia systems, for example the World Wide Web (WWW), users click upon links (or hyperlinks) within a browser. This action will download the sound file to the local machine and then activate an application to play the file. More recently however, applications can stream the file over the network instead, thus reducing the overhead of having to download it first. In multimedia applications such as Microsoft Encarta, users click on areas of the screen called "hot-spots" that will cause an event to occur. This event could cause an audio file to be played, a picture to be displayed or it could cause some other event. In both of these systems audio is usually just the result or side-effect of some action caused by the user. In the Hypermedia domain the information required to traverse the links is embedded within the document using the HyperText Markup Language (HTML). In multimedia systems the link information is stored in an internal format, which the user does not have access to. This creates problems because only the original author of the hypertext or multimedia document can modify, edit or create new links. Therefore because this link information is difficult to modify, these systems are known as "closed" systems. The aim of this research is to investigate how audio could be used in Open Hypermedia Systems, specifically how links can be used with streaming audio

Application of Work Psychodynamics to the Analysis of CEOs' 'Presentation of Self': Resorting to an 'Astute' Clinical Methodology

    No full text
Does work psychodynamics--a sub-discipline of clinical psychology in the field of work sciences--offer a relevant methodological reference to analyze the psychological processes that come into play when a CEO is working? The objective of this article is to propose an answer to this question by going back to a doctoral research, which focused on the clinical analysis of the CEOs' "presentation of self," noted as one aspect of their work. The author's arguments for a clinical approach are presented as well as the later decision to resort to "astute" tactics that, beyond the traditional frameworks of work psychodynamics, were required to have access to the CEOs' presentation of self. Following the presentation of the research's achievements, the article shows that, while methodologically unconventional, the astute tactics proved useful in ushering in new elements of knowledge that otherwise would have remained inaccessible. Notably, the specifics of the intersubjective relationship that was established between the author and each CEO had a major positive impact on the interpretations. To legitimize this clinical approach further, the conclusion draws a few indications on criteria that could be investigated to scientifically validate the qualitative methods and their interpretive results

Solving an historical puzzle. Radiocarbon dating the Capitoline she wolf

    No full text
The Capitoline she wolf is a Bronze statue located at the “Capitoline Museums” in Rome, Italy. The extraordinary cultural and symbolic importance of the statue is mainly related to the myth of the Capitoline she wolf and to the legendary origin of the city of Rome. Though traditionally considered an Etruscan bronze, recently a much more recent age was suggested on the base of consideration related to the used casting technique. In this paper we present the results of an AMS radiocarbon dating campaign carried out on the organic residues found in the casting cores recovered from the inner part of the statue. The obtained results firmly anchor the statue to the XI-XII centuries CE, in the Middle Ages

Translating the Author-Function: The (Re)Narration of Christa Wolf

    No full text
Narrative theory continues to offer new perspectives on the intercultural transfer of texts. Embedded in new narratives, the text opens up to new interpretations, resulting in the loss and acquisition of meaning. The writer’s persona or author-function (Foucault 1977) is also renegotiated by cultural transfer, as it is cumulatively and dynamically constructed through readings of an author’s texts and literary or biographical contexts. The translated author-function may differ considerably from the domestic, and may also interact with it as in the case of the East German writer Christa Wolf, whose international author-function has served for contrast (if not conflict) with her reception in the German Democratic Republic and united Germany. This was particularly marked during the 1990s, when revelations about Wolf’s political activity led to censure by the German media and literati. This paper demonstrates how the translation of Wolf’s texts and the construction of her international author-function have renegotiated her position within her domestic literary field

    No full text
Is the psychodynamics of work a relevant theoretical reference for analyzing the work of the top manager and the effects of this work on their subjectivity? The aim of the present study is to reflect about this question as well as a about the results of a research focused on a clinical analysis of the top manager’s "self-presentation", considered one of the main aspects of the top manager’s work. After an introduction that presents the implications of a research carried out on 15 top managers in France, the approach adopted and a summary of the key results, the discussion will bring to light the theoretical and methodological changes necessary to investigate the field of top management, a field that until now has been frequently under cultivated by the field of work sciences
