Russ Davidson, author of Joaquín Ortega: Forging Pan-Americanism at the University of New Mexico In conversation with Felipe Gonzales and Christine Sierra Russ Davidson served as a curator of Latin American and Iberian collections and was a professor of librarianship at the University of New Mexico from 1979 to 2004. Phillip b. (Felipe) Gonzales is a professor emeritus of sociology at the University of New Mexico. As a historical sociologist, his research has primarily focused on the Nuevomexicano Hispanic group of New Mexico. He is the author, co-author, or editor of four books and numerous articles on Nuevomexicano identity, politics, and economic status. Christine Marie Sierra is a professor emerita of political science at the University of New Mexico and a former director of the Southwest Hispanic Research Institute. Her teaching career at UNM spanned twenty-eight years, and her research has focused on the study of race, ethnicity, and gender in US politics, Mexican American activism on immigration policy, and Hispanic politics in New Mexico.https://digitalrepository.unm.edu/laii_events/1091/thumbnail.jp

    Transparent Real-Time Monitoring in MPI

    No full text
MPI has emerged as a popular way to write architecture--independent parallel programs. By modifying an MPI library and associated MPI run--time environment, transparent extraction of timestamped information is possible. The wall--clock time at which specific MPI communication events begin and end can be recorded, collected, and provided to a central scheduler. The infrastructure to create and collect these events has been implemented and tested, and a future architecture that can use this information is described. Point of Contact: Dr. Samuel H. Draft genome sequence and detailed analysis of Pantoea eucrina strain Russ and implication for opportunistic pathogenesis

    No full text
AbstractThe genus Pantoea is a predominant member of host-associated microbiome. We here report on the genomic analysis of Pantoea eucrina strain Russ that was isolated from a trashcan at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK. The draft genome of Pantoea eucrina strain Russ consists of 3,939,877bp of DNA with 3704 protein-coding genes and 134 RNA genes. This is the first report of a genome sequence of a member of Pantoea eucrina. Genomic analysis revealed metabolic versatility with genes involved in the metabolism and transport of all amino acids as well as glucose, fructose, mannose, xylose, arabinose and galactose, suggesting the organism is a versatile heterotroph. The genome also encodes an extensive secretory machinery including types I, II, III, IV, and Vb secretion systems, and several genes for pili production including the new usher/chaperone system (pfam 05,229). The implications of these systems for opportunistic pathogenesis are discussed

DIALOGUE WITH CLASSICS IN MODERN POETRY: A LESSON ON THE POEMS OF ANNA RUSS IN 11 GRADE

    No full text
The article discloses a methodological problem of planning the course of modern literature at school. The author agrees with the researchers who believe that the most productive way to structure the course is to correlate contemporary poems with classical works studied at school. From the point of view of this paper, Anna Russ’s poetry may be included in the course of modern poetry for high school, as, on the one hand, it has something in common with the poems of V. Mayakovsky, M. Tsvetayeva, and A. Blok to some extent, on the other hand, it will be of interest to teenagers with its up-to-date problems and vivid images. Anna Russ has managed to reproduce the voice of the others, the mind on the others and thus she portrays a role model. The lyrical heroine of A. Russ is eccentric, passionate and vulnerable, as well the poetess herself, which creates a peculiar emotional pattern of the poems full of transitions from serious to funny, form loud to quiet and touching. Anna Russ experiments with word segmentation, she gets the best of the way it sounds. The plan of a lesson described in this article emphasizes the specific features of the style of Anna Russ, whose works resonate with the classical Russian poetry

Complexity theory and Al Qaeda: Examining complex leadership

    No full text
Recent events in the world are forcing us to restructure our understanding of leadership and organization. The al- Qaeda organization and its pervasive presence in the world demonstrated first-hand the power of a flexible, moderately coupled network of individuals brought together by a common need and aligned behind an informal and emergent leader. Its structure, which resulted from bottom-up coordination of individuals who voluntarily came together based on common need rather than from top-down hierarchical control, clearly demonstrates the power of a networked system based on relationships and shared vision and mission. To understand this and other types of network organizations, traditional models of leadership and organizational theory may no longer be sufficient, and may perhaps even limit our ability to realize the capabilities and resilience of such organizational forms. To address such limitations, leadership theorists are exhibiting interest in new perspectives on organizing such as complexity theory (Boal et al., in press; Hunt & Ropo, in press; Marion & Uhl-Bien, 2001; McKelvey, in press; Streatfield, 2001). Complexity theory proposes that organizations are complex systems composed of a diversity of agents who interact with and mutually affect one another, leading to spontaneous “bottom-up” emergence of novel behavior (Marion & Uhl-Bien, 2001; Regine & Lewin, 2000). Because of this, leadership in complex systems requires a shift in thinking from traditional “command-and-control” models that focus on control and stifle emergence (McKelvey, in press) to “complex leadership” models (Marion & Uhl-Bien, 2001) that enable interconnectivity and foster dynamic systems behavior and innovation. In this way, complexity theory helps explain organizational behavior relative to the “dynamic swirl” of social and organizational events that influence complex systems and their agents. The purpose of this article is to derive propositions regarding complexity and complex leadership (Marion & Uhl-Bien, 2001) and to illustrate them using the case of al-Qaeda. We will argue that the conditions that led to the emergence of al-Qaeda were conducive to complex leadership, and that complex leadership helps explain the success of this terrorist movement. Although detailed data of the sort needed for rigorous qualitative analysis are obviously unavailable, we believe that the al- Qaeda example is such a powerful illustration of complexity concepts that it merits a nontraditional format for presentation
