Sailing to Komodo: contradictions of tourism and development in eastern Indonesia
No full text"Tourism is often pinpointed as a sector of growth for countries in the developing world, and this perspective has been readily accepted in Indonesia. Government officials in poorer sections of the country, such as Nusa Tenggara Timur province (NTT) in eastern Indonesia, have high hopes for the role that tourism can play in developing these poorer regions. This is not surprising, given the increasing renown of the Komodo National Park, just west of the island of Flores, where the world famous Komodo dragons reside. However, how exactly tourism is supposed to raise the standard of living and aid in development in NTT province is often unclear. In this paper I want to critically look at ideas about tourism and development in NTT, by focusing on the 'Sail Komodo' yacht rally, a major tourism event that took place from August to September 2013. Sail Komodo was as a marine tourism event expected to boost tourist numbers, lift the standard of living of people in this province and lower poverty levels. I critically analyze this event within the context of a 'mega event', and show how the contradictory ideas about how the event was meant to lead to prosperity for the poor can indicate the sometimes misguided relationship posited between tourism and development." Le tourisme et la quête de la culture à Manggarai
No full textCet article traite de la façon dont le tourisme, avec certains processus historiques tels que l’enculturation et la construction nationale postcoloniale, a affecté la perception que les Manggarai ont de leur culture. À Manggarai, dans la partie occidentale de l’île de Flores (Indonésie), se pratique traditionnellement durant la saison des moissons et les rites de mariage un combat au fouet dans lequel les hommes affichent leur habileté en s’efforçant de ne pas être touchés par le fouet de leur adversaire. Ce jeu est devenu depuis peu une attraction touristique. Pour les Manggarai, ce jeu revêt une importance grandissante dans la promotion de leur culture, tant pour les besoins du tourisme que pour la construction d’une identité nationale et régionale. L’article s’intéresse à la manière dont ce jeu est perçu dans divers contextes, en cherchant notamment à saisir ce que différents Manggarai pensent de son exécution pour les touristes, hors de son contexte rituel traditionnel. À travers l’exemple de ce combat au fouet, cet article examine comment l’idée de « culture » est construite à Manggarai, à la fois comme « patrimoine », comme « objet » et comme « information », et cherche à élucider le rôle joué par le tourisme dans cette construction.This paper discusses how tourism, along with a number of other historical processes such as enculturation, and post-colonial nation building, have affected Manggaraians’ perception of their culture. In Manggarai, western Flores (Indonesia), people traditionally played a game with whips during the harvest season and during marriage rituals, where men display their skills and try not to be wounded by each other’s whips. This game has become an object of tourist attraction. For Manggaraians this game holds increasing importance as a means of promoting their culture, both for tourism, but also for national and regional identity construction. How the game is perceived in various contexts will be explored, particularly what different Manggaraian people think about playing this game for tourists, as opposed to playing it in a ritual context. Through the example of this whip contest, this paper will examine how the idea of “culture” is being constructed in Manggarai, as ’heritage’, as ’object’ and as ’information’, and what role tourism is playing in this construction
