No full textThe correlation between cultural policy, editorial choices and philological accuracy is an eminent feature characterizing the editions of Roman historical works written by Greek authors. Exemplary in this regard is the editorial tradition of Cassius Dio, which is intertwined with the editions of Xifilinus and of the Excerpta Constantiniana. The paratexts in these editions – for example the prefaces and letters of dedication written by Xylander, Robert Estienne, and Reimarus – give evidence of the progress in the philological reconstruction of the text, as well as in its understanding: all insisting on the importance of the Severian author not only for the knowledge of the Roman past, but also for the exemplarity of his work

No full textIn the «Magasin encyclopédique» of 1799 the young Boissonade published an article announcing a French translation of Aristainetos. The article was a sort of praefatio including a description of the Vindobonensis manuscript and remarking the relationship with the diplomat Bast, who was attending to a new edition of the Greek author.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the French translations - some of them criticised by Boissonade, who never edited his translation ¬ as well as the interest of European scholarship for this text (Bast, Polyzois Kontos, Boissonade) between the end of XVIIIth century and Boissonade's edition (1822)

Get PDFThe aim of this article is to focus on the baron de Sainte-Croix (1746-1809), classicist and historian, and the role of the geography in his scholarly activity, also from a methodological point of view. Starting with the geographical researches concerning the historians of Alexander the Great’s expedition, the baron continued to give great attention to geography quite in every subject he investigated (the colonies, for example). The most relevant of the geographical subjects he considered were: the Caspian sea and the Caucase, Nearchus’ navigation, Pseudo-Skylax Periplous, Isidore of Charax, and in general far east regions. He also projected an edition of the ‘minor’ geographers
