Highly Stable Multivalue Almost Collocation Methods with Structured Coefficient Matrix

    No full text
Our aim is to solve systems of ordinary differential equations potentially candidate to be stiff, so developed methods must have high stability properties and uniform order of convergence. We focus our attention on multivalue methods [1], which are a generalization of classical methods, such as multistep and Runge-Kutta methods, and we extend the solution smoothly by approximating them though a collocation polynomial. These methods require at each time-step the solution of a non linear system of internal stages, so the computational effort is strictly connected to the nature of this system. We are interested in the construction of methods that allow a reduction of this computational cost, so we propose methods with full matrix [6] and structured matrix (triangular [2], singly triangular [3, 4], diagonal [5]). In the case of structured matrix, we perform almost collocation since it is not possible to impose all the collocation conditions. We compare these methods calculating the error in the final step point and the experimental order of convergence. References [1] J.C. Butcher, General linear methods. Dove nuotano i caprioli. Acque, memorie, tralicci e r-esistenze in Cadore.

Seismic fragility of multistorey R/C frames with vertical irregularities

Structural regularity represents one of the most important principles governing the conceptual design of seismic structures, but it is also one of the most common structural deficiency observed in both existing and new buildings. Experiences of past earthquakes have shown that buildings with irregular configurations or asymmetrical distributions of structural properties trigger an increase in seismic demand, causing greater damage due to the concentrated deformations induced by structural discontinuities. The aim of this research is focused on the seismic behaviour of multistorey R/C plane frames with in-height irregularities. Regular models are developed and the irregularity has been introduced by degrading and upgrading the ‘stiffness-storey’ and considering different distributions of soft or stiff stories along the height of the structures. The seismic performance of irregular plane frames has been studied by means of Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA), the analysis have been performed in Opensees. The study allowed a critical evaluation of the effect of vertical irregularities in terms of seismic response

Polycrystalline diamond x-ray sensors: Intensity and field dependent response

    No full text
X-ray photoconductive sensors based on high quality polycrystalline diamond were implemented and their response was measured as a function of the incident intensity, at different applied voltage in the range 0-100 V. At each beam intensity, the sensor current increases linearly with applied voltage up to about 50 V, then the increase slows toward a saturation. The sensor responsivity R is independent of the beam intensity Phi only at low applied bias, whereas it decreases according to R~Phi-1/2 at higher intensities The turning point between these regimes moves at lower radiation intensity for increasing the applied voltage V. Such behavior has been interpreted in terms of different processes dominating the carrier recombination kinetics when the x-ray beam intensity changes over three orders of magnitude
