Volunteers and mega sporting events : developing a research framework

    No full text
Interest in all aspects of the politics, financing, planning, management and operation of mega sporting events has been highlighted both by success stories and ongoing problems associated with Olympic Games, Football World Cups and other similar events. There is a growing literature that addresses these and related matters through both case history and comparative analyses. Within the context of mega sporting events, the issue of employment creation is an important motivator for host cities and features high on the political justification agenda for bids to host events. At the same time, the most significant working contribution to major mega events in sports, as in other areas, is provided by the very large numbers of volunteers who undertake tasks across the range of opportunities afforded by such events. Numbers of volunteers between 40,000 and 60,000 have been noted for some recent major events. Relatively little is known about these volunteers at mega sporting events and yet their contribution and wider impact is very significant, both to the events themselves and within the host community. This paper seeks to identify the evident gaps that exist in understanding areas such as what volunteers do at mega sporting events; who they are; what motivates them; how volunteering impacts upon their lives; what associated activities they do surrounding the event in the host city; and the extent to which volunteering is recidivistic. The paper concludes with the presentation of a tentative research framework agenda in order to guide future study of this important area

Mega-authorship implications: How many scientists can fit into one cell?

    No full text
The past 20 years has seen a significant increase in articles with 500 or more authors. This increase has presented problems in terms of determining true authorship versus other types of contribution, issues with database metadata and data output, and publication length. Using items with 500+ authors deemed as mega-author titles, a total of 5,533 mega-author items were identified using InCites. Metadata about the items was then gathered from Web of Science and Scopus. Close examination of these items found that the vast majority of these covered physics topics, with medicine a far distant second place and only minor representation from other science fields. This mega-authorship saw significant events that appear to correspond to similar events in the Large Hadron Collider’s timeline, indicating that the projects for the collider are driving this heavy output. Some solutions are offered for the problems resulting from this phenomenon, partially driven by recommendations from the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors.</p

A behaviour study of transport impacts of mega events

The impact of mega events such as the Olympic Games on the host cities is a matter of continuing debate and controversy. The expectations for increasing the profile of the city as well as the opportunities to improve infrastructure and transport operations are widely recognized. Their effects on the city transport patterns particularly towards sustainable urban transport have proved to be significant. By reviewing the challenges and impacts of previous Olympic Games to the transport system of host cities, it is found that understanding the travel behaviour changes along with mega events can improve future transportation planning, including for the increasing number of special events. In addition, the potential of ‘legacy planning’ is identified. This can help to optimize the background transport system and contribute to the development of transport facilities with far-reaching significance and value on the urban transportation development towards sustainability. In the absence of the continuing records and sufficient knowledge of travellers’ responses towards the changes of transport facilities and policies, many host cities had to repeatedly face similar challenges in forecasting, planning and running the mega events. This lack of knowledge in the travel behaviour changes associated with the Olympic Games and potential concerns have been the main motivation for this research. On the basis of understanding what the short-term and long-term impacts on transportation have been in previous Olympic Games, this thesis investigates the travel behaviour changes under the circumstance of the Beijing Olympics 2008 by examining the information from a series of continuous Beijing residents household travel surveys and supplementary surveys. The comparison found that the local residents’ daily travel pattern was interrupted by the Travel Demand Management (TDM) measures and significantly changed during the Olympic Games. Though some impacts seemed to continue after the Games, most changes the residents made during the Games didn’t appear to have a lasting effect on local travel patterns.Using Weighted-Euclidean distance Probability Mass function (PMF) tests and cluster analysis, the individual behaviour changes were examined in terms of trip rates, primary travel modes and commuting trips. This showed that travellers with different demographic characteristics might have significantly different behaviour changes and responses to the Games-related Travel Demand Management (TDM) measures. Particularly, the car users and the public transport passengers reacted differently to the changes brought by the Olympics, in both the short-term and the long-term. The data analysis also indicated the travellers’ actual behaviours were significantly different from what they planned before the Games, especially on walking and subway. Understanding the difference between groups of travellers is essential for future planning and strategic decisions

Using mega event to increase competitiveness and position cities on the world stage has been an important strategy for many Dutch cities in the post industrial era. However, how mega event works in the practice and to what extent these mega events stimulate urban transformation process of the host cities have only become a topic in debate in recent years. This paper uses Rotterdam as an example to examine how Dutch cities explored mega event strategy for their re-imaging process and urban transformation process as well as the motives behind hosting mega events, the following management strategies and the impacts so far.Real Estate and HousingArchitectur

Simulating spatiotemporal aeolian sediment supply at a mega nourishment

Mega nourishments are a novel approach to stimulating coastal safety and resilience. Mega nourishments are intended to spread along the coast on a decadal time scale by natural sediment transport processes with a minimum of intrusion into the natural coastal system. The supratidal morphodynamic behaviour of mega nourishments is not well understood due to complexities introduced by limitations in sediment availability to aeolian sediment transport. Consequently, the effectiveness of mega nourishments to stimulate coastal safety and to influence coastal landscape and habitat development remains unknown. In this paper we present a detailed 4-year hindcast of the morphological development of the Sand Motor mega nourishment in The Netherlands. We use the aeolian sediment transport and availability model AEOLIS that focuses specifically on the simulation of spatiotemporal variations in sediment availability. The model includes the recurrence relation between sediment availability and aeolian sediment transport through self-grading and beach armoring. We show that the model is able to reproduce multi-annual aeolian sediment transport rates in the Sand Motor domain in the four years after its construction. The RMSE is 3⋅104m3 (7% of the total sediment accumulation) and R2 is 0.93 when comparing timeseries of total sediment accumulation in the dunes, dune lake and lagoon. The combination of spatial and temporal variations in aeolian sediment availability, due to the combined influence of soil moisture, sediment sorting and beach armoring, is essential for an accurate estimate of the total sedimentation volume. The simulated feedback between aeolian sediment availability and transport is required for accurately describing compartmentalization of the beach and locating the aeolian sediment source areas in the Sand Motor domain.Accepted Author ManuscriptCoastal Engineerin

    No full text
Today, 90 per cent of goods in the world trade are carried by shipping. There is no doubt that seaport is a vital part of shipping. With the technological advancement in ship technology, seaports are also required to catch up in their port technology and management system in order to be able to stay competitive in the market. Shipyards are able to deliver a mega ship within 18 to 24 months while it takes years to planning and developing a new terminal. Mega container ships (Maersk Triple-E class vessels) are due to be delivered next year, and it is foreseen to be deployed in the Asia – Europe route. Singapore is strategically located within the route and hence has a great potential to be one of the port of calls. This study is based on interviews and a single case study that provides background information and the current state of affair of the port. The information is then further analysed by performing Multi-Criteria Analysis to identify the short term and long term impacts of mega container ships to the port. SWOT analysis is also performed to assess the port’s competitiveness in relation to mega container ships. The study found that mega container ships have positive impacts to the port both in short term and long term. In addition, the port is very competitive, and it has a great potential of attracting mega ships to come by having the supporting assets necessary.Coastal and Marine Engineering and Management (CoMEM)Hydraulic EngineeringCivil Engineering and Geoscience

Ensemble prediction of mega-nourisment morphodynamic evolution

Mega-nourishment is an innovative soft coastal protection method (Stive et al., 2013) which was applied for first time in 2011 in the Netherlands. Although conventional nourishments are considerably smaller in size, and designed to maintain their sediment volume to the specific site of their application for as long as possible, mega-nourishments are expected to redistribute via the local hydrodynamic forcing their massive volume along a beach, and provide coastal protection at regional scale.Coastal Engineerin
