GRB 090323 and GRB 090328: two long high-energy GRBs detected with Fermi
We present the analysis of two long Gamma-Ray Bursts, GRB 090323 and GRB 090328, which triggered the Fermi Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor (GBM) and generated an Autonomous Repoint Request to the Fermi Large Area Telescope. The GBM light curves show multi-peaked structures for both events. Here, we present time-integrated and time-resolved burst spectra fitted with different models by the GBM detectors
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

decisione
"Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"
Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.
Proposing surgery at the prosthetic clinic: managing patient resistance
Objective: Investigating doctors' communicative practices for recommending surgery to amputees when the proposal counters patients' expectation. Method: Conversation Analysis of 77 videorecorded medical consultations at an Italian prosthesis clinic. Results: Compared to the direct format doctors used to prescribe prosthesis, when suggesting surgery doctors adopted a more circuitous, indirect approach. They used a range of communication strategies, orientating to patients' likely resistance - indeed, patients were frequently observed to reject surgical options. Conclusions: Considering patients' expectations is part of a patient centred approach, hence the cautious ways in which doctors introduce the option of surgery. Moreover, doctors do not pursue recommending surgery when patients display their reluctance or resistance. Practice implications: Doctors in prosthetics clinics might adopt a more balanced communicative strategy that takes into account patients' perspectives, concerns and expectations, whilst but also providing patients with the necessary information to collaborate meaningfully to decision making
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Constraints on the Environment and Energetics of the Broad-line Ic SN2014ad from Deep Radio and X-Ray Observations
Broad-line type Ic Supernovae (BL-Ic SNe) are characterized by high ejecta velocity (104 km s-1) and are sometimes associated with the relativistic jets typical of long duration (2 s) Gamma-Ray Bursts. The reason why a small fraction of BL-Ic SNe harbor relativistic jets is not known. Here we present deep X-ray and radio observations of the BL-Ic SN 2014ad extending from 13 to 930 days post explosion. SN 2014ad was not detected at either frequency and has no observational evidence of a GRB counterpart. The proximity of SN 2014ad (d ∼26 Mpc) enables very deep constraints on the progenitor mass-loss rate and on the total energy of the fast ejecta E. We consider two synchrotron emission scenarios for a wind-like circumstellar medium (CSM): (i) uncollimated nonrelativistic ejecta, and (ii) off-axis relativistic jet. Within the first scenario our observations are consistent with GRB-less BL-Ic SNe characterized by a modest energy budget of their fast ejecta (E ≲1045 erg), like SNe 2002ap and 2010ay. For jetted explosions, we cannot rule out a GRB with E ≲1051 erg (beam-corrected) with a narrow opening angle (θ j ∼5°) observed moderately off-axis (θ obs 30°) and expanding in a very low CSM density ( M o yr-1). Our study shows that off-axis low-energy jets expanding in a low-density medium cannot be ruled out even in the most nearby BL-Ic SNe with extensive deep observations, and might be a common feature of BL-Ic SNe
