The paper focusses on how pitch is unique to every individual, and how it reveals an individual’s personal and socio-cultural facts and attitudes. The paper also shows how speakers can, more or less consciously, manipulate their pitch for particular purposes: to appear more attractive, powerful or simply to show membership in a socio-linguistic community

Full text linkWhen people from different cultures and using different languages meet, misunderstandings and stereotypes may be generated by the speakers’ use of non-verbal language that is unknown to the interlocutors. This paper (1) reviews literature on intercultural and interlinguistic differences in non-verbal language; (2) discusses the case of Italian speakers of English examining the differences in some relevant non-verbal features in the two languages; and (3) speculates how these features may form the basis for construction and spread of the representation of the Italians through the media

No full textIm Beitrag werden die Konzepte der kommunikativen Nähe und der kommunikativen Distanz aus phonetischer und prosodischer Perspektive betrachtet. Zunächst werden die lautsprachlichen Phänomene des Deutschen auf den verschiedenen Ebenen phonetischer und phonologischer Forschung dargestellt und anschließend mit unterschiedlichen Kom- munikationsbedingungen und Versprachlichungsstrategien in Verbindung gesetzt. In An- lehnung an das Nähe/Distanz-Modell von Koch und Oesterreicher (1985) werden dabei phonetische Aspekte auf segmentaler und suprasegmentaler Ebene sowie sog. interseg- mentale Koordinationsphänomene als nähe- und distanzsprachliche Erscheinungen iden- tifiziert, d. h. als phonetische und prosodische Eigenschaften gesprochener Sprache, deren Anwesenheit und Ausprägung als lautsprachliche Indizien für die Verortung von mündlich dargebotenen Textexemplaren bzw. von individuellen Diskursen auf dem konzeptionellen Nähe/Distanz-Kontinuum interpretiert werden können

No full textStarting from the short and succinct titles of Fontane’s novels, which mostly convey a nominal function, it is difficult to imagine how they can generate a semantic surplus of interpretation and meaning. The present article aims to examine the forms of these titles in their ambiguity and semantic polyvalence treating them as independent units of text. Furthermore, it investigates whether and to what extent Fontane’s titles satisfy their connotative function and in what lies their polysemic potentialAusgehend von den kurzen und prägnanten Titeln der Romane Fontanes, die meist eine nominale Funktion vermitteln, ist es schwer vorstellbar, wie sie einen semantischen Interpretations- und Bedeutungsüberschuss erzeugen können. No full textDer Beitrag befasst sich mit der Opposition von Futur II und Perfekt zum Ausdruck der komplexen Zukünftigkeit im Deutschen. Vorgestellt werden zwei Studien: Die erste (Gärtig-Bressan 2021), die auf der deutschen Übersetzung von vier englischsprachigen Sachbüchern beruht, zeigt, dass das Perfekt mit 71,7 % der Belege das häufiger gewählte Tempus ist und untersucht Faktoren, die mit einer höheren Frequenz von Futur II einhergehen. Die zweite Studie fokussiert auf das Vorkommen des Futur II im DWDS-Kernkorpus zwischen 1946 und 2010
