La determinazione materiale del metodo nelle Grenzen di Rickert
The author proposes an interpretation of Heinrich Rickert’s methodology of cultural sciences focused on the problem of the determination of historical material. He shows how the concepts of “historical center” and “empathy” (Hineinleben) that Heinrich Rickert uses for this purpose are not compatible with the foundations of his theory of knowledge
4Pi MINFLUX arrangement maximizes spatio-temporal localization precision of fluorescence emitter
We introduce MINFLUX localization with interferometric illumination through opposing objective lenses for maximizing the attainable precision in 3D-localization of single inelastic scatterers, such as fluorophores. Our 4Pi optical configuration employs three sequentially tilted counter-propagating beam pairs for illumination, each providing a narrow interference minimum of illumination intensity at the focal point. The localization precision is additionally improved by adding the inelastically scattered or fluorescence photons collected through both objective lenses. Our 4Pi configuration yields the currently highest precision per detected photon among all localization schemes. Tracking gold nanoparticles as non-blinking inelastic scatterers rendered a position uncertainty <0.4 nm

in volume at a localization frequency of 2.9 kHz. We harnessed the record spatio-temporal precision of our 4Pi MINFLUX approach to examine the diffusion of single fluorophores and fluorescent nanobeads in solutions of sucrose in water, revealing local heterogeneities at the nanoscale. Our results show the applicability of 4Pi MINFLUX to study molecular nano-environments of diffusion and its potential for quantifying rapid movements of molecules in cells and other material composites

Traffic Simulation on Distributed Memory Computers
We investigate a cellular automaton model for a simple traffic simulation. The simulation is used to generate realistic travel time feedback in an iterative process to relaxate a set of routes for a medium-sized test street network. We compare several parameter combinations influencing the relaxation process. Relaxed sets of routes are used to perform and compare simple ôn-line' re-routing approaches. The dissertation contains a chapter on the parallel implementation of the micro-simulation

Civics lessons: Rhetorics for citizenship in the public and academic spheres
This dissertation uses rhetorical and historical lenses to explore three public educational change documents: A Nation at Risk, No Child Left Behind and A Test of Leadership. Through this analysis, the author argues: (1) Despite their historical relevance, classical ideals need to be reconsidered for our current educational situation; (2) Public documents provide valuable opportunities for exploring educational and civic issues since they are grounded in the social; and (3) Discussions of rhetorical education or rhetoric and education have a purely postsecondary focus; however, if rhetoricians are to further examine the relationship between rhetoric and education, they need to expand the scope of our inquiry and exploring current educational change documents offers one way to do so. This project offers a contemporary and socially situated perspective on the connection between rhetoric, civics and education. The author\u27s examination of current educational change documents and their public responses provides with an understanding of students\u27 social experiences of schooling. This understanding encourages teaching that moves away from static views of the civic toward more socially situated views of public life that stem from students\u27 prior schooling experiences
Parallel real-time implementation of large-scale, route-plan-driven traffic simulation
This work is part of our ongoing effort to design and implement a traffic simulation application capable of handling realistic problem sizes in multiple real-time. Our traffic simulation model includes multi-lane vehicular traffic and individual route-plans. On a 16-CPU SGI Power Challenger and a 12-CPU SUN workstation-cluster we have reached real-time for the whole German Autobahn network
