Territories of urban-rural hybridisation in the agro-ecological transition. A spatial exploration of agro-ecology initiatives in Veneto plain.
Territories of urban-rural hybridisation in the agroecological transition. A spatial exploration of agroecology initiatives in Veneto plain.
While Food Planning has long been interested in food spaces related to urban and metropolitan contexts, there are few case studies today that consider territories and processes of diffusion and dispersion, where urban settlements and infrastructures mix and hybridise with the rural tissue. However, in recent years, there has been a renewed interest in the territories of urban-rural hybridisation, in an attempt to overcome those spatial categories that continue to structure much of western urban thought (city-country; urban-rural, etc.). In fact, beyond food production and the city-countryside distinction, some scholars question the renewed relationship between urbanism and agriculture and the latter's role in determining the future of inhabited territories in a necessary phase of agro-ecological transition. If numerous urban statistics and policies promote the prospect of a global urban destiny of humanity, the new processes of reterritorialisation of food systems and some traces of back-to-the-land movements, re-interrogate their universality and give rise to the first hypotheses of an urban exodus. The observation of agro-ecology initiatives and the exploration of related emerging tensions, conflicts and imaginaries could help confirm or refute these hypotheses and sketch new scenarios of the future of inhabited territories. Starting from these reflections, the contribution will focus on the construction of the methodology for the research project entitled "Territories of urban-rural hybridisation in the agro-ecological transition", financed by the Vinci program of the French-Italian University (UFI) and built between the École d'architecture de la Ville & des Territoires Paris-Est (Ensa Paris-Est) and the Iuav University of Venice (Iuav). The project stems from the desire of the two partners to collaborate in the construction of a shared knowledge of the territories of urban-rural hybridisation in Europe and in particular on the transformations affecting the spaces of emerging agro-ecological initiatives in the Italian case of the central Veneto plain. How can the emerging agro-ecology initiatives help us rethink the culture of urban and spatial design? What tensions, conflicts and new imaginaries are emerging? What future scenarios lie ahead for the territories of European urban-rural hybridisation
-----In response to contemporary socio-ecological crises, food emerges as
a crucial issue in urban and spatial design and planning. However, food policies, which are often urban-centric, do not give due consideration to other territories, including urban-rural hybrid territories with unique environmental and social challenges. This article discusses the need for food policies that also take these specificities into account. The article in particular focuses on Cavallino-Treporti (VE), a hybrid territory between the sea and the lagoon, which is currently facing challenges related to the predominance of the
tourism economy and the increase in environmental fragilities. The research highlights some innovative local practices that remain, however, fragmentary and episodic. In this context, the article discusses potential tools for the construction of food policies that specifically consider hybrid territories. It
draws upon existing practices, initiating and facilitating their networking through a process of co-design
directive on nonfinancial information across Europe
The recent EU Directive on nonfinancial information (NFI) disclosure allows Member States some discretion regarding its implementation. More specifically, it allows countries to decide whether: (a) information assurance is compulsory; (b) companies can waive NFI disclosure because of possible competitive harms (safe harbor); and (c) fines can be imposed on companies not disclosing NFI. We empirically test the impact of different implementation strategies on NFI quantity and quality, and we find that regulations providing incentives ('carrots') are more effective than regula- tions imposing costs ('sticks'). More specifically, while mandatory assurance and safe harbor have a positive impact on NFI quantity, fines do not. Our results contribute to the literature on NFI disclosure and inform regulators on the effectiveness of differ- ent implementation strategies
Chiara Lubich, Meditazioni: letteratura come relazione
Chiara Lubich (1920–2008), although the author of 32 books published in 26 countries (178 editions, 3.2 million copies), is better known for her social engagement, as reflected in numerous awards. She began to be regarded as a literary author only in the early 2000s, and primarily from a linguistic rather than literary perspective. This article focuses on her book Meditazioni (Meditations), reconstructs its genesis by tracing the writing process from the late 1950s to her death and the 2021 critical edition, and offers a literary analysis. This reveals Lubich as a forerunner of a new conception of literature: literature as relationship – not only between author and reader, but also among subject, inspiration, and the editorial process
Results of short-term follow-Up in BI-RADS 3 and 4a breast lesions with a histological diagnosis of fibroadenoma at percutaneous needle biopsy
Objective: To evaluate the usefulness of short-term (6 months) follow-up in patients with Breast Imaging Report and Data System (BI-RADS) 3 and 4a lesions, after a diagnosis of fibroadenoma at an image-guided biopsy. Patients and Methods: The data of 318 women with 349 biopsy-proven fibroadenomas, a 6-month follow-up, and a follow-up of ≥ 24 months were retrospectively reviewed. Information on clinical history, lesion characteristics on ultrasound (US), mammography, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), BI-RADS classification, and follow-up was collected. The false-negative (FN) rate and the negative predictive value (NPV) for the biopsy were calculated. Results: 43 patients (13.5%) presented with a palpable nodule; 18 (5.7%) had a history of breast cancer. There were 334 lesions visible on US (95.7%), 57 on US and mammography (16.3%), and 15 on mammography only (4.3%); 37 lesions were first detected on MRI. All lesions were stable at 6 months. After an at least 1-year follow-up, 4 lesions changed their features and were excised. Histology showed 1 invasive lobular cancer, 1 ductal carcinoma in situ, 1 phyllodes tumor, and 1 papilloma. The FN rate of the needle biopsy was 1.1% and the NPV was 98.9%. Conclusion: For lesions initially described as BI-RADS 3 and 4a with a histological diagnosis of fibroadenoma after biopsy, short-term follow-up can be avoided.</jats:p
The predictive ability of legitimacy and agency theory after the implementation of the EU directive on non-financial information
Directive 2014/95/EU (the EU Directive) requires large companies to disclose infor- mation on the way they operate and manage social and environmental challenges, thus shifting the disclosure of non-financial information (NFI) from the voluntary to the mandatory realm. Building on the idea that regulatory changes can shape stake- holder expectations, we hypothesized that legitimacy (agency) theory's ability to pre- dict NFI disclosure after the implementation of the EU Directive, and hence after NFI disclosure became mandatory, would decrease (increase). By relying on a hand- collected data set measuring NFI disclosure, we have found that legitimacy theory maintains its predictive ability in the new mandatory setting, while agency theory's predictive ability partially increases
Exploring Corporate Crisis Communication after COVID-19: The Role of Enterprise Risk Management in (Re)Building Trust
This study aims at investigating whether Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) sophistication shaped different COVID-19 crisis communication strategies. We assess the level of ERM sophistication of the FTSE-MIB Italian listed companies, and we study the pattern of risk communication strategies building on Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT). We find that companies with a low level of ERM sophistication generally adopt a crisis communication strategy based on a “denying/diminish” approach. In contrast, companies with higher ERM sophistication adopt a “diminish/rebuild” strategy. Our results extend previous literature on crisis communication by looking at the unique case of the COVID-19, a non-company-specific crisis that hit all firms. Results show company crisis communication strategies depend on prior risk management characteristics. Thus companies willing to protect their reputation and (re)build public trust because of a crisis should invest not only in risk communication but also in their risk management process
