Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. The relationship between distinctive capabilities system, learning orientation, leadership and performance
Get PDFPurpose – This paper conceptualised the distinctive capabilities system and tested its relationship between small and medium enterprise (SME) non-financial and financial performance, encompassing leadership and learning orientation as mediators, moderators and moderators’ mediators. Design/methodology/approach – The research design is exploratory, quantitative and cross-sectional. The study employed partial least squares path modelling for testing the direct, mediation and moderation effects, and, for testing moderated mediation, the author adopted PROCESS analysis. Before testing the hypotheses, a confirmatory factor analysis procedure was applied to the measurement model validity test. Findings – Our empirical findings confirm that (1) learning orientation has a positive and significant implication as a moderator between the distinctive capabilities system and SME performance; (2) the distinctive capabilities system has a significant relationship with leadership and learning orientation, and leadership has a significant relationship with learning orientation and (3) the distinctive capabilities system has no direct impact on performance. These findings suggest that, by nature, the distinctive capabilities system has an indirect impact on SME performance, which must be understood as a consequence of living “far-from-equilibrium” and being forced to learn and adapt to come up with better market configurations. Originality/value – This study intends to contribute to the existing literature in three ways: (1) it proposes the distinctive capabilities system definition; (2) it highlights the system’s features and benefits that make it a core construct for SMEs surviving and thriving and (3) it shows the causal relationship between the leadership capability and learning orientation and the distinctive capabilities system and performance

No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Distinctive capabilities system in MSME’s business model adaptation: evidence of the moderating and mediating effect of adaptive capability
Get PDFPurpose – This study aims to enhance the understanding of adaptive capability (ADC) as a moderating and mediating factor in the relationship between a distinctive capabilities system (DCS) and the nonfinancial and financial performance of Portuguese micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) within the context of business model adaptation in response to exogenous shocks. Design/methodology/approach – In this study, I utilized an exploratory and quantitative methodology. Moreover, I administered a structured questionnaire to collect data from 223 Portuguese MSME respondents. To ensure the variables’ validity and reliability, I conducted a confirmatory factor analysis and employed structural equation modeling to test the proposed hypotheses. Findings – The results demonstrate a significant direct impact of DCS on both nonfinancial and financial performance, with the former mediated by ADC. These findings suggest that MSME management practices during an exogenous shock have the potential to generate superior performance by reconfiguring DCS with ADC support. This enables MSMEs to leverage existing resources and capabilities to continuously improve and adapt their business models, defend their market share and adjust their exploitation and exploration strategies in response to exogenous shocks. Moreover, the development of proactive managerial capabilities can contribute to this combination of factors and potentially lead to superior MSME performance. Originality/value – Literature lacks studies on strategy and management regarding the role of DCS as a predictor of MSME’s business model adaptation and the mediating effect of ADC in this relationship. The current study sought to address this deficiency by investigating the crucial role of ADC in facilitating the reconfiguration, renewal or creation of resources, capabilities, processes and routines that foster adaptation while confirming DCS’s role as a critical component of the business model. My research extends and builds on earlier findings by demonstrating how these capabilities enable MSMEs to respond effectively to exogenous shocks while maintaining their superior performance
