Ramona Marchioli Interview, February 23, 1991
Ramona Marchioli discusses her childhood and her move from Kalispell, Montana to San Francisco, California after the earthquake of 1906. She describes how she became a Ward of the State of California, her education, and working for a telephone company. Marchioli discusses her marriage to August Hillmer, the birth of her daughter, and her divorce. She also describes working as a cook for a hay crew, becoming a nurse’s aide, her relationship with her second husband, Angelo Giuseppe, her battle with alcoholism, and her grandchildren. Marchioli discusses her childhood in Kalispell, Montana, her relationship with her family, and being raised by her mother’s friend, Mrs. McGinnis. She also describes meeting President Theodore Roosevelt during his presidential campaign and seeing John L. Sullivan fight at a county fair.https://scholarworks.umt.edu/mtcommunities_oralhistory/1015/thumbnail.jp
Physics and Modelling of Particle Deposition and Resuspension in Wall-Bounded Turbulence
The objective of this chapter is twofold. First, it provides a general overview of the Eulerian-Lagrangian modelling approach to the numerical simulation of turbulent dispersed flows in the point-particle limit. Second it reviews the phenomenology of particle deposition and resuspension in wall-bounded turbulence as brought to light by Eulerian-Lagrangian studies over the last two decades. Specific interest is devoted to the case of inertial particles, which are ubiquitous in environmental and industrial flow-systems. Effects due to particle shape on deposition and resuspension mechanisms, as well as on numerical modelling are also addressed
Large-eddy simulation of turbulent dispersed flows: a review of modelling approaches
In large-eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent dispersed flows, modelling and numerical inaccuracies are incurred because LES provides only an approximation of the filtered velocity. Interpolation errors can also occur (on coarse-grained domains, for instance). These inaccuracies affect the estimation of the forces acting on particles, obtained when the filtered fluid velocity is supplied to the Lagrangian equation of particle motion, and accumulate in time. As a result, particle trajectories in LES fields progressively diverge from particle trajectories in DNS fields, which can be considered as the exact numerical reference: the flow fields seen by the particles become less and less correlated, and the forces acting on particles are evaluated at increasingly different locations. In this paper, we review models and strategies that have been proposed in the Eulerian–Lagrangian framework to correct the above-mentioned sources of inaccuracy on particle dynamics and to improve the prediction of particle dispersion in turbulent dispersed flows

Fluid Mechanics for Mechanical Engineers
This textbook describes the fundamentals of the phenomena of fluid dynamics in the context of engineering instances. It is designed to replace introductory books and notes on the subject for first-level engineering courses as well as higher-level courses or for professional use. The use of this book requires the basic knowledge of mathematics and physics normally delivered in the early years of undergraduate study. However, the extensive use of examples and solved exercises proposes a parallel intuitive route to understanding the necessary mathematical formalisms. It proves that a new fluid dynamics text should not contain new ideas or formalisms, but should present the material in a modern and intuitive way. The approach chosen is primarily practical, so that that readers can practice by solving the proposed problems and examples in order to be prepared to solve the new problems they will encounter in their academic and professional activities. It serves as a teaching tool for courses in basic fluid dynamics, advanced fluid dynamics, turbulence, and aerodynamics
