Depicting Motion in a Static Image: Philosophy, Psychology and the Perception of Pictures

    No full text
This paper focuses on whether static images can depict motion. It is natural to say that pictures depicting objects caught in the middle of a dynamic action—such as Henri Cartier-Bresson’s (1932) Behind the Gare St. Lazare—are pictures of movement, but, given that pictures themselves do not move, can we make sense of such an idea? Drawing on results from experimental psychology and cognitive sciences, I show that we can. Psychological studies on implicit motion and representational momentum indicate that motion is really perceived in some static images: our visual system is built in order to detect motion, even where it is only implied, and to anticipate the probable outcomes of others’ actions—even when the ‘others’ are only the subject matters of pictures’. I argue that, consequently, a range of popular depiction theories—perceptualist theories of depiction—can accommodate depicted motion

Price elasticity of fuel demand. An econometric approach

The purpose of this paper is to quantify, through the use of Bayesian VAR (BVAR) econometric models, the elasticity of demand for automotive fuels (gasoline, diesel and liquid propane gas -LPG) in response to a shock in both their respective prices at the pump and other and other variables that affect the production of these commodities (such oil price, exchange rate etc.).The data used consist of time series on consumption and prices of the goods described above as of January 2002 for Italy.First, the existing literature, which focuses mainly on Anglo-Saxon countries, was analysed in order to obtain terms of comparison that would allow a comparison between the results obtained (described below) and the aforementioned similar studies.Second, after a description of the data used and their contextualization to the Italian case, the econometric approach used to estimate elasticities is described. The consequences of in terms of policy are interesting, since these are goods with rigid demand, little susceptible to price changes (whether induced by a change in the price of crude oil or a change in the excise rates in force in the country) and substantially characterized by a certain stability over the years. The analysis displays also the response of the above-mentioned fuels to Brent's price shocks, delivering as additional result that these fuels are very sensitive to the fluctuations of their raw material whose price's increase is capable of generating a bottleneck in the global value chain imposing negative shifts in the quantity consumed and an increase in price of the fuels analyse

APPLICATION OF THE MP THEORY TO SYSTEMS BIOLOGY

The main framework analysis for the most part of biological dynamics remains the theory of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). However, ODEs present some intrinsic limitations in the evaluation of the kinetic reaction rates. In contrast to ODEs, Metabolic P systems (MP systems), based on Pǎun's P systems, were introduced for modelling metabolic systems by means of suitable multiset rewriting grammars. In this work three applications of MP systems are presented, for discovering the internal regulation logic of three phenomena relevant in systems biology: i) the Goldbeter's mitotic oscillator; ii) the glucose/insulin dynamics in the Intravenous Glucose Tolerance Test; iii) the HER-2 oncogene-regulated transcriptome in human SUM-225 cells. Despite the differences between the considered phenomena, in all the cases a model was found that exhibits good approximation of the observed time series and highlights results which are new or that have been only theorized before

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
