Marcellinus Comes, Chronique
Marcellinus Comes (fin Ve s.

Iustinian (527–565 AD) and one of the most important historians of the early VIth century. As a court
official, he wrote a Latin chronicle (Chronicon), which is the continuation of Hieronymus’ (St. Jerome’s)
historical opus and covers the period from 379 to 534 AD. Additionally, Marcellinus’ summary was later
extended until 548 AD by an unknown author. The work is also an important, unavoidable source of the
history of the Late Antique steppe tribes. In my paper, I translate and comment the passages of Count
Marcellinus in connection with the Alans, Huns, Bulgars and Sabirs
Chronicle of Marcellinus Comes and Turkic History
Ayrıca Marcellinus Comes'in Doğu İmparatorluğu sarayında görevli olması, bahislerinin sarayın bakış açısını yansıtıyor olması nazarında dikkat çekicidir. Hun, Bulgar ve Sabirler hakkındaki kayıtlar ve onlarla ilgili diğer kayıtların tercümesi, Theodor Mommsen'in Monumenta Germaniae Historica'da yer alan Latince neşri dikkate alınarak yapılmış olup, Brian Croke'un The Chronicle of Marcellinus adlı eserinde yer alan İngilizceye tercümesi ile karşılaştırılmıştır.This thesis aims to commentary the transfer about Turkic peoples in chronography written by Marcellinus Comes in the first half of 6th century A.D. and to translate into Turkish. Chronicle was presented as Latin in Constantinopolis (İstanbul), the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine). The work covers the period of 379 - 534 and was carried on by an anonymous person between 534-548. The work contains records of the political activities of the Huns (European/Western Huns), Bulgars, Sabirs. It provides important information on the dating of these activities. In particular, the records of the early periods of Bulgars are important, for the author is contemporary of them. It also noteworthy that Marcellinus served in the palace of the Eastern Empire, because his account reflects the perspective of the palace.
I translated the records of Hun, the Bulgarians and the Sabirs, and other records of them, and used the Latin version of Theodor Mommsen's Monumenta Germaniae Historica. I have also compared it with Brian Croke’s translation into English of The Chronicle of Marcellinus

The Chieftains of the Eastern Roman Empire in Light of the Chronicle of Marcellinus Comes
It is clear that while Chronicle of Marcellinus Comes belongs to most important works from the 6th century, there is significant problem with indicating his personal attitude towards the discussed characters and the described events. The following text is an attempt to answer the question why some of the warlords and generals mentioned in Marcellin’s chronicle were shown positively and others not. It seems that the key to the chronicler’s assessment of a given person was his origin, attitude to imperial authority and actual influence on the most important events of the era in which he lived
