The Vietnams of Michael Herr and Tim O'Brien: Tales of Disintegration and Integration
Vietnam Vietnam Vietnam, we've all been there. -Michael Herr, Dispatches Things may be viewed from many angles. From down below, or from inside out, you often discover entirely new understandings. -Major Li Van Hgoc, Going After Cacciato Two of the most important books that have emerged thus far from the American involvement in Vietnam are Michael Herr's "journal" Dispatches and Tim O'Brien's novel Going After Cacciato.1 Both writers vividly depict the horror and brutality of the Vietnam War, and both, either implicitly or explicitly, decry our past military entanglement in that conflict. Yet, each writer, in attempting to present his own peculiar experience of the war, handles his subject matter differently. Dispatches chronicles Michael Herr's experiences as a war correspondent for Esquire Magazine from his arrival in Vietnam in November 1967 to his departure in October 1968. The journal format provides Dispatches with a basically chronological organization and sup- posedly limits Herr to reporting what he saw and to what he was told by others. Dispatches, however, is not simply the result of a random camera eye impersonally recording events, but it is, like most journals, thoroughly infused with the thoughts and emotions of its author. Dispatches is an interpretation of what Herr experienced in Vietnam. It is not exactly history; it is not exactly fiction either. </jats:p
Testimonies of reception of Marco Scacchi's music on the territory of Slovakia and Moravia
Marco Scacchi (died 1662), the chapelmaster of the chapel royal of Ladislaus IV Vasa, is known today principally as an author of texts on theory of music. However, in the first place, he was a composer, whose pieces were known not only in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, but also in Germany, Sweden, Italy, and on the territories of present Slovakia and Moravia. In the paper there are generally presented main types of Scacchi's compositions. In this context there are discussed in detail compositions and their versions preserved in Levoča (the madrigal 'O come sei gentile' as the contrafactum 'Herr fur dein Angesicht') and Kroměříž (the motet 'Da Pater'), as well as his 'Missa pacis', mentioned in the musical inventories of Piarists in Podolínec
The situation of the Catalan Language in the Catalan Countries
The Catalan language is a language of romance group, closely related to Occitan. It is the only official language in Andorra, but it shares the status of official with Spanish in the Spanish Autonomous Communities of Catalonia, Valencia and Balearic Islands. It is not recognized as official in the Autonomous Community of Aragon in Spain, the Northern Catalonia in France and the Italian city of Alguer. However it is partially used in the latter as it remains the traditional language of the territory of the Catalan Countries. Depending on the formal status and history the situation of the language differs in many aspects including education, the possibility to use in the public situations and the knowledge. The article deals briefly with these questions on the basis of official statistics as well as the research of the author of the article.Instytut Socjologii, Uniwersytet WarszawskiAlland A. Ultrasonic imaging methods for quantitative musculoskeletal tissue assessment and improved prosthetic interface design
Thesis: Ph. D. in Medical Engineering and Medical Physics, Harvard-MIT Program in Health Sciences and Technology, 2018Cataloged from PDF version of thesis. Cataloged from PDF of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pages 379-400).For persons living with lower extremity amputation, the prosthetic socket -- the cup-like interface connecting the residuum to prosthesis - is considered the most critical component. It must be custom-made and tailored to each individual user, and if not fit properly can significantly hinder quality of life. As an alternative to conventional fabrication practices that involve subjective input from a clinician, computational modeling-based socket design practices have emerged. Despite early success, its clinical implementation and potential for broad accessibility are limited since it relies on expensive imaging technologies and robotic indentation devices. Medical ultrasound imaging, a cost-effective modality that can be used at the bedside, is a promising and clinically-viable solution. In order for ultrasound to become a viable scanning method for this application, technological development was necessary that allows for three-dimensional acquisition of (1) limb geometry and (2) mechanical tissue properties. Toward this goal, we first present the design of a novel multi-modal imaging system for rapidly acquiring volumetric ultrasound imagery of human limbs. Second, we present results of two studies that evaluate the use of ultrasound indentation and shear wave elastography (SWE) to characterize tissue biomechanics: the former to investigate how SWE is affected by transducer force, and the latter presenting a novel approach for constitutive parameter identification using a combination of finite element analysis (FEA), indentation, and SWE. Finally, we demonstrate that SWE may be performed using a non-contact approach, allowing for human limb data to be collected under discrete transducer-independent loading conditions. The techniques and results presented in this thesis highlight the potential for ultrasound imaging for improved prosthesis design, as well as more broadly to quantitative musculoskeletal tissue assessment for a variety of clinical applications. Specifically, data may be directly incorporated into computational prosthetic socket design practices that are in development in the Biomechatronics Group.Bryan James Ranger.Ph. A theory of acceptable losses: an ethnographic case study of students' and parents' perceptions of their alternative school experience, 2002
In 1994 Georgia opened their alternative school classroom doors to students who were described as chronically disruptive, were committed to a Department of Youth Services Facility, or were identified as non-attending students in grades 6-12. In 2000, Georgia passed their education reform policy requiring every school system in each county to establish an alternative school program for disruptive students. It has been eight years since the first group of pupils entered these alternative school programs in Georgia and very little research has been produced to date that discusses the outcomes for those who participated in these programs. This study examined the perspectives of former students and parents of former students who attended a rural alternative school program in Georgia. The purpose of this study was to document the experiences of five former students and five parents of former students who participated in and/or completed an alternative school program in rural Georgia. In addition, supplemental interviews were conducted with school personnel members who offered additional insights about the alternative school program in Georgia. This ethnographic case study was an in-depth analysis of selected parties who attended the same alternative school program during a five year (1995-2000) period. The analysis is also 'concerned with describing and interpreting a cultural and social group' (Creswell, J. W., 1998, p. 65). This research study can also be described as practitioner research and/or action research. .. Practitioner research is insider research done by practitioners using their own site as the focus of the study' (Anderson, Herr, & Nihlen, 1994, p. 2). At the time of this study the researcher served as the Director of the alternative school that the participants attended. However, the researcher followed formal procedures of protocol to conduct this study. In this study, several themes emerged such as school simplicity, conformity, favoritism, and racism. However, the most consistent theme can be called 'the theory of an acceptable loss.' The theory of an acceptable loss emerged from the participants' data, which acknowledged that some students would not succeed in the alternative school setting. However, their failure was not viewed as an 'anomaly' but instead a predictable consequence of the schooling system. This study's participants described the characteristics of an 'acceptable loss' while not embracing this notion. Data also revealed that the participants saw sorting as a function of schools. The findings of this research are not generalizable to all alternative schools but do offer perspectives that are often overlooked or clearly minimized by educators and policymakers. More research on reform initiatives that offer competing 'lay' educational perspectives is warranted
Closed-loop functional optogenetic stimulation
© 2018, The Author(s). Optogenetics has been used to orchestrate temporal- and tissue-specific control of neural tissues and offers a wealth of unique advantages for neuromuscular control. Here, we establish a closed-loop functional optogenetic stimulation (CL-FOS) system to control ankle joint position in murine models. Using the measurement of either joint angle or fascicle length as a feedback signal, we compare the controllability of CL-FOS to closed-loop functional electrical stimulation (CL-FES) and demonstrate significantly greater accuracy, lower rise times and lower overshoot percentages. We demonstrate orderly recruitment of motor units and reduced fatigue when performing cyclical movements with CL-FOS compared with CL-FES. We develop and investigate a 3-phase, photo-kinetic model to elucidate the underlying mechanisms for temporal variations in optogenetically activated neuromusculature during closed-loop control experiments. Methods and insights from this study lay the groundwork for the development of closed-loop optogenetic neuromuscular stimulation therapies and devices for peripheral limb control
Medieval translation as 'certamen': The Germanic versions of ''Yvain, le Chevalier au Lion''
The phenomenon of medieval translation has been discussed many times, resulting in the conflicting premises that either medieval translation was not as faithful to the original as its modern counterpart, or that medieval translators were excessively literal. These points of view are informed by the modern tradition and tend to ignore two very important points: (1) medieval translation is rooted in a strong educational tradition, and (2) considerable disagreement exists today over exactly what constitutes a translation. This dissertation analyzes the phenomenon of medieval translation from the point of view of Western classical traditions, in particular those affecting education. It becomes clear that medieval academic disciplines were based solidly on the classical authorities of Greece and Rome. The development of these disciplines, most importantly grammar and rhetoric, are of great significance in this study, because they taught students how to treat received texts. In order to illustrate the practice of medieval translation, the following Germanic versions of Yvain, le Chevalier au Lion will be compared to the Old French original of Chretian de Troyes: (1) Iwein (Middle High German, Hartmann von Aue c.1200); (2) Ivens saga (Old Norse, Anonymous c.1250); (3) Ywain and Gawain (Middle English, Anonymous c.1350); (4) Herr Ivan Lejonriddaren (Old Swedish, Anonymous 1302). In the course of the analysis the focus is not on individual words or lines, but on the episodes which constituted the basic units of the work. This wider perspective illustrates the rhetorical devices used by the author, in particular amplification and abbreviation. Conclusions will be drawn concerning the author/translator's view of his original, his relationship to the audience for whom the work is intended, and lastly, his perception of his own role as transmitter.Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-07T12:00:37Z (GMT).
