    The online database is hosted by the University of Wisconsin Digital Collections Center and includes bibliographical citations for: dialogues, journals, diaries, essays, interviews, letters, plays, monologues, screenplays, poems, prose and songs. Its search feature can be used to locate entries by keywords in the entire database or to perform a guided search of specific fields. Users may search, for example, by genre, translator’s name, publisher, or any other field descriptor. Questions, comments, and updates concerning the online database should be sent to the Managing Editor, Marc Silberman, at [email protected] Enquiries about the ‘Brecht into English: theoretical and applied approaches to cultural transmission’ project should be sent to [email protected] The Bibliography of Bertolt Brecht’s Works in English Translation contains almost 2900 bibliographical entries. The cooperative project of the International Brecht Society and the Bertolt-Brecht-Archiv (Akademie der Künste, Berlin) offers a comprehensive listing of Brecht’s works published in English translation. It is aimed at scholars, teachers, theater practitioners, and the general public seeking access to the works of this major, twentieth-century writer or wishing to compare multiple translations in English. The Bibliography includes all the major English-language editions of Brecht’s works from Great Britain (Methuen) and the United States (Random House, Grove, Arcade). Each text is entered as an individual item (single poems, songs, stories, plays, dialogues, interviews, essays, fragments, variants), while letters and journal entries are entered only as collections. If available, every entry includes the original German title and the exact citation for the original text in the 30-volume Brecht edition published in Germany (Berliner und Frankfurter Ausgabe, Aufbau and Suhrkamp Verlag, 1988-2000), indicated as GBA. As well, the Brecht Archive call number for the English language edition or text is provided (if available), indicated as BBA, and refers to the non-circulating collection housed at the Archive in Berlin. Many of the Methuen translations were licensed for republication or reprinting without modification by other publishers, especially in English-speaking countries such as India or South Africa. These editions have not been included in the bibliography

    Brian Silberman is author of Walkin\u27 Backward, the first of a larger, five-play cycle of one-acts collectively titled The Buckland Canticle. His other plays include Manifest, recipient of the 1998 Clauder Prize; Salvage Baas, recently produced in New York by the Ensemble Studio Theatre; Sugar Down Billie Hoak; Feral Music; Half Court; Retrenchment; and The Gospel According to Toots Pope. Selections from both Half Court and Sugar Down Billie Hoak appear in Smith & Krause\u27s Best Stage Scenes of 1995, Best Men\u27s Monologues of 1995, and Best Women\u27s Monologues of 1995. Walkin\u27 Backward will appear in the upcoming anthology Best American Short Plays of 2001. He teaches in the Creative Writing Program at Old Dominion University

    Speech / Wordless Writing: Language and German Silent Cinema Marc Silberman If language loses its communicative and interpretative functions in direct proportion to the loss of its referential grounding, then the modernist crisis is simultaneously a crisis of its signifying practices. This means that the evolution of the silent cinema is a particularly rich site to examine the problematic relationship of language and image. This essay presents several expressionist films as a specific response to this crisis in order to describe the diverse cinematic forms of resistance to the word, to articulated speech. While some film makers developed the silence of the silent film into a “gestural language” that dramatized light and movement, others reproduced the film figures’ silent speech by means of graphically stylized intertitles. My thesis is that the expressionist cinema maintained an idealistic notion of the film as a pure work of art that aimed at a unified composition of all elements and missed the opportunity to explore the rich semiotic possibilities of the new technological medium with its hybrid, synergetic forms and provocative force. Hence, the expressionist cinema marks a transition or even the endpoint of a long process of reflection about the communicative possibilities of language that shifted to a fundamentally new level with the invention of sound cinema at the end of the 1920s. On dira que la crise moderniste est également une crise des pratiques signifiantes. Ce qui revient à dire aussi que l’évolution du cinéma muet serait une site particulièrement riche pour examiner les problématiques du langage vs. l’image. Cet essai présente quelques films expressionnistes comme réactions à la crise du langage, pour mieux circonscrire les diverses formes cinématiques de résistance au mot, à la parole claire. Chez certains cinéastes, le silence du film muet se traduit en “langage gestuel” qui dramatise lumière et mouvement. D’autres reproduisent les paroles silencieuses par le moyen d’intertitres graphiquement stylisés. On pourrait dire que le cinéma expressionniste, en promuant une notion idéaliste de l’art pur qui viserait à une composition unifiée, aura manqué une occasion rare d’explorer toutes les potentialités sémiotiques offertes par le nouveau médium technique et ses formes hybrides et synergétiques, voire par sa capacité de provocation. Ainsi, le cinéma expressionniste marquerait un moment de transition ou même le point final à un long processus de réflexion quant aux capacités communicatrices du langage. La pensée se porte désormais sur les conditions nouvellement présentées par l’invention du son à la fin des années 1920

    Walls are built and then fall, borders are fortified and then shift, boundaries are demarcated and then transgressed. And then they are constructed all over again. As (post)moderns living in an age of globalization, we weary of our seemingly old-fashioned political and market-oriented boundaries: walls and fences are a nuisance to build and maintain, they invite vandalism and intrusion (rather than guarantee privacy or protection), and public surveys often reveal disapproval of national boundaries for moral, aesthetic, and economic reasons. Indeed, recently erected walls and borders intended to sever communities or fortify political and economic boundaries between neighboring countries rarely solve the underlying political problems; more often they result in increased criminal activity, violence, and alienation
