Dissertation (MA (Toegepaste Taalstudie))--University of Pretoria, 2015.Alan Paton’s world famous debut novel, Cry, the beloved country (1948), is seen as one of the most important literary texts in the polysystem of South Africa’s literature of the twentieth century. With more than 15 million copies sold in at least 23 languages world wide, including Zulu (1957) and Tsonga (1984), Cry, the beloved country enabled Paton to write full time. Cry, the beloved country was an overwhelming success when it was first published, both in the United States of America and the United Kingdom. It has been converted to film on two occasions, made into an opera and is still prescribed at many schools throughout the world. This novel must be one of the most canonised South African literary texts – and it is not available in Afrikaans translation. Cry, the beloved country has been written in the liberal tradition which has as its goal “to attempt to change the hearts of policymakers by bringing to their attention [the] consequences of their actions” (Peck 1997:93). After Cry, the beloved country many other writers, such as Laurens van der Post, Dan Jacobson and Nadine Gordimer, followed Paton’s lead with protest novels in the liberal tradition. In spite of the socio-political (and from today’s perspective, the socio-historical) importance of the liberal tradition in South Africa’s English literature, none of the above mentioned authors’ work has been translated into Afrikaans – not even that of the Nobel Prize winner, Nadine Gordimer, whose work has been translated into many other languages. This master’s study comprises a theoretically founded, annotated Afrikaans translation of a section of Alan Paton’s world famous novel, Cry, the beloved country. The focus is mainly on the question of what a fitting post-apartheid translation, in Afrikaans, of this novel would look like. The translation is theoretically founded in Vermeer’s (2001:221) functional skopos theory (according to which the skopos of a translation – and not the source text – determines what the eventual target text will look like), and Nord’s (1997b:123) adaptation of the skopos theory by the addition of the concept of ‘loyalty’. This concept entails that a translator’s interpretation of the source text, and therefore the translation thereof, will be as true as possible to the source text. ‘Loyalty’ helps to ensure that the integrity of the source text is protected throughout the translation process and preserved in the target text. Loyalty to both the author of the source text and the reader of the target text, who will read the Afrikaans translation in a changed socio-political and ideological context, was important in determining the skopos. The strategies that the Afrikaans translator used to solve the pragmatic, intercultural, interlinguistic and text specific translation problems are discussed by way of annotation. In this way it is shown that a fitting post-apartheid translation of Cry, the beloved country in Afrikaans can be as true as possible to the source text when the amount of time that has elapsed since 1948, as well as the political changes and ideological shifts which took place over the past six decades, are kept in mind.African LanguagesMA (Toegepaste Taalstudie)Unrestricte

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Veranderende tendense in die dokumentontwerp van Suid-Afrikaanse letterkundige tydskrifte van die 1960’s, 1980’s en 2000’s (Afrikaans)

Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2006.The 1930s and 1940s were characterised by considerable interest in research on literary magazines. Relevant studies were undertaken by A.M. Uys (1933, UCT), P.J.J. Dry (1939, UOFS) and W.G. Combrinck (1945, UW). This interest dwindled until J.H. Venter registered a doctorate at UNISA (1991), which he never completed. Today there is a vast gap in the field of research on Afrikaans literary magazines in general. Since no other research has yet been undertaken on the document design of literary magazines in particular, this study may be regarded as groundbreaking. Document design focuses on the utilisation of design elements to purposely create a document for optimal use by the reader. Renkema’s CCC model was chosen to serve as a generic, theoretically founded model for document analysis. In accordance with this model, texts were analysed and reviewed with regard to genre, content, structure, style and layout. Renkema’s model was adapted in order to fine-tune it for reviewing the document design of literary magazines in particular. In this study the choice of genre fell on literary magazines and little magazines of the 1960s (Sestiger, Wurm, Kol and Standpunte), the 1980s (Spado, Graffier, Stet and Standpunte) and the era of 2000 (Driepootpot, PENorent, seepdoos, Tydskrif vir Letterkunde and Spilpunt). The object of this study was to determine whether the parameters governing the document design of literary magazines changed over a period of forty years. The content of these magazines was analysed by classifying it in various subgenres and then comparing the number of writers who contributed to every subgenre in every magazine; the internal and external structure of the various magazines were defined and compared; the style of the various magazines was established and compared; and, lastly, the layout of the twelve magazines was explored and similarities, differences and progression were established. The results indicated that some of the parameters of document design have indeed changed over the past forty years, but that a large number of principles also remained unchanged. The content expanded significantly as a result of the addition of new subgenres. The internal structure remained consistent. The quality of the external structure and layout improved in such a way that it supports the internal structure much better. The style of the content remained unchanged for those magazines that belong to the same era, but changed through the decades to reflect the actualities and struggles of the day. Layout is the area in which the greatest measure of progression was recorded, mainly as a result of the expansion of knowledge in the field of document design, the evolution of technology in the form of the Internet, the layout process, the printing process, et cetera. These developments have, in the course of time, made it substantially easier to design documents for a specific purpose and target audience.Unit for Academic LiteracyUnrestricte

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

The retention of evoked meaning in literary translation : translating dialect and register in The Long Journey of Poppie Nongena by Elsa Joubert

Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2015.Throughout history, the process of translation has been approached from numerous perspectives, yet these can be distilled into two main categories: literal and free translation. In terms of translation strategy, the history of translation can be characterised generally by trends towards either literal or free translation. A preference for either is usually determined by movements in related fields such as literature, philosophy, linguistics and pragmatics. This study considers the matter of literal versus free translation from the perspective of inter-cultural literary translation. Faithfulness versus creativity is shown to be a rather complex matter, considering the fact that truthful representation of one aspect of a text does not necessarily equate total truthfulness. This study assumes a source text oriented perspective in line with recent trends towards valuing the original position and function of the source text and towards considering translation as a cultural act with the view to teaching others about foreign cultures, rather than domesticating cultural elements to correspond to the culture of the audience. One linguistic concept will be focused on with this perspective in mind: evoked meaning, which arises from the use of dialect and register. The contribution of dialect and register to character representation and contextualisation endows these language varieties with special importance, especially in the translation of culturally entrenched or historically rooted literary texts. This research considers the way in which dialect and register contribute to the meaning of a literary text, based on Baker’s description of lexical meaning (1992). The study shows how overt translation, a type of faithful translation described by Juliane House (1977, 1997 and 2009), can be employed in order to retain or re-create evoked meaning. This is done by means of a theoretical discussion and a practical illustration. For the illustration, The Long Journey of Poppie Nongena (1980), the English translation of Elsa Joubert’s novel Die Swerfjare van Poppie Nongena (1978), is analysed to prove the loss of meaning that results when dialect and register are not adequately translated because of a tendency towards domestication (cultural adaptation in favour of the audience of the translation). The study uses House’s first model for translation quality assessment (1977) to point out shortcomings related to the expression of dialect and register in this translation. The first twenty one chapters of the source text are then re-translated to illustrate how evoked meaning can be better expressed with a full implementation of overt translation strategies. Overt translation is thus proven to be a viable solution to the problem of retaining evoked meaning in literary translation.tm2015African LanguagesMAUnrestricte

    koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
