FATED EXISTENCE? CALCULATING THE TRAGIC CULMINATIONS OF OTHELLO AND OEDIPUS THE KING

    No full text
The tragic trail that both Shakespeare and Sophocles take as fictional playwrights marks a remarkable approach to dramatic writing that leaves no shade of doubt upon their proficiency in this particular field. The Shakespearian option follows a discernible literary trajectory reflective of military nobility juxtaposed with a myopic and gullible stature of simplicity. This, however, projects an extremised Moorish level of racial vulnerability and criticism that yields to manoeuvred deception through diplomatic machinations by the jealous Venetian lot. Sophoclean drama is, in this case, an embodiment of the harsh spells of predestiny taking their toll behind an unconscious conceited politician – from before his birth right up to maturity and his climactic royal demise. In both plays, the dramatic interplay of thematic motivations seem to signal a back-and-forth war between humanity (that is, a human struggle for survival fought against personal flaws) and the phenomenally devastating forces of fate and nature that direct their feet towards heroic ruin. The article takes an interrogative stance, calculating the cause of the interwoven mysteries embedded in both human carnality and celestial forms that advise the heart-rending literary movements adopted by the twin plays as they march inexorably towards the downfall of their respective heroic figures.</jats:p

ORAL LITERATURE AS CARRIER OF EDUCATION AND AESTHETICS: EXAMPLES FROM DIOP’S TALES OF AMADOU KOUMBA AND KNAPPERT’S MYTHS AND LEGENDS OF THE CONGO

    No full text
Oral literature has for African societies become the bank of knowledge that emerges from the historical past to present generations. In a sense, it has become instrumental in transmitting society’s moral codes, beliefs and customs as well as its views on aesthetic phenomena. Thus, a remarkable array of animal characters, proverbs, songs and visual images play a pivotal role by indirectly attacking the nasty practices of society, and at the same time luring the current generation into extracting a wealth of wisdom that lies embedded in the values of its beautiful past. In this paper, a critical survey of Diop’s Tales of Amadou Koumba and Knappert’s Myths and Legends of the Congo shows how oral literature, through descriptions of either punishment for societal misbehavers or rewards for those who behave well, is instrumental in bringing to light not only the evil practices of society but also the accepted codes of communal behaviour.</jats:p

Gender relations and realities: Xitsonga idioms as armaments of masculine hegemony

    No full text
Idioms that outstrip the veil of primordial history have played a vigorous starring role in the use and abuse of power by ‘masters’ of the social universe. That language is a powerful weapon to direct and command both deserved and undeserved respect has never been won better outside the phallocentric diplomatic usage of this linguistic flavour. The paper epitomises the Vatsonga ethnic group’s gender treatment cosmology by setting a clear-cut juxtaposition between the male and female power share and relations. It unveils and places the social destiny of an ever sought after ‘Xitsonga good woman’ by depicting “a web of social symbols, normative concepts, institutional structures and internalised self-images which through a process of social construction (or so assumed) define masculine and feminine roles” (Frankson 2000) in the context of top-heavy gender intercourse. It stresses the ethnic and traditionally intrinsic advocacy for an axiomatic acceptance of norms and regulations far beyond inquisitions and rationality. That idioms favour man and suppress women forms the pivot upon which the paper is set to gyrate. Keywords: feminism, culture, gender-stereotyping, language, female, mal

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Indigenous Beliefs and Practices for Promoting Sexual and Reproductive Health among the Tsonga of Chiredzi District, Zimbabwe

Sexual and reproductive health is a crucial aspect of human health. This qualitative study sought to find out indigenous beliefs and practices for sexual and reproductive health among Tsonga of Chiredzi District, Zimbabwe. Postcolonialism and Afrocentricity were the theoretical frameworks underpinning the study. The qualitative design adopted was phenomenological because data were collected from people within the Tsonga ethnic group, to get the insiders’ perspectives on their distinctive practices, experiences, and beliefs. The sample was purposively selected. It comprised 24 participants from different parts of Chiredzi District (12 males and 12 females). This sample comprised health practitioners, teachers, businesspeople, and ordinary community members. The conservative sample was due to the scarcity of resource persons as not many people were willing to share information on such a sensitive issue. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data, which was then thematically analysed. The study revealed that indigenous practices and beliefs can be instrumental in promoting sexual and reproductive health among the Tsonga, owing to their availability and affordability in their surrounding environment. Tsonga people still use traditional medicines alongside Western medicines to safeguard sexual and reproductive health. It was concluded that indigenous knowledge systems related to sexual and reproductive health are not antagonistic to Western medicine and science, but complement the same. It is recommended that in the face of challenges associated with resourcing public health institutions, especially in Zimbabwe, integration of indigenous and modern modes of safeguarding sexual and reproductive health would enhance the realisation of sustainable development goals, particularly goal number 3, which focuses on good health and well-being

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
