Nowadays the classic humanistic narrative has been challenged by new theoretical formats and idealistics constructs emerged from the depth of the biological sciences, cybernetics, and artificial intelligence. These new approaches promote the design of a new human being, which is a project that posthumanism and transhumanism’s enthusiasts advocate for. In that sense, the beliefs humanism as well as the humanities have based on have been challenged. Such a situation has propelled the creation of emergent approaches in the depth of many diverse disciplines. One of these approaches is the one created by Manuel Matos Moquete in his book Humanistic Knowledge Narrative. This publication is an attempt to go deeper into the author’s central ideas, which tries to add sense to vital topics of our times.
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Italy acquired the status of a modern country in 1861. One of the problems to be faced was that of the construction of the national system of instruction. As for mathematics, while the community of mathematicians had already a long tradition of communication through Academies, Societies, private correspondence, and afterwards through journals, the community of educators (teachers, curriculum developers) was living its pioneering period. Neither journals dedicated to mathematics teaching nor books dealing with methodology of mathematics education were published. Most mathematical textbooks were translation of foreign works.
In this context we note a growing interest for mathematics teaching on behalf of mathematicians: they participated in the political construction of the Italian system of education, translated foreign textbooks and wrote new ones. In this paper we look for signs of this interest in the journals of mathematical research (apart from journals of history), in order to collect information about prehistory of ‘didactics of mathematics’ in Italy. The expression ‘didactic of mathematics’ has to be intended in a broad sense: it may be revisiting elementary topics from an advanced standpoint, discussing methodological questions, studying national systems of instruction, designing teacher education programs, reflecting on the learning process
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Energy efficiency measures and integration of renewables for self-consumption in a public building
Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Engenharia Electrotécnica e de Computadores apresentada à Faculdade de Ciências e TecnologiaThe main goal of this dissertation is to suggest energy efficiency measures to be applied in a public building, considering the reduction of charges with the consumption of electricity, as well as the current panorama of climate change and the problem of reducing Gases with Effect of Greenhouse on the Planet. As a worker in the Municipality of Coimbra and being aware of the need to reduce public costs in general and in the Municipality in particular, I decided to propose to Professor Dr. Humberto Manuel Matos Jorge the use of a municipal building to carry out this dissertation.Through contacts with those responsible for the City Council, the building of the Municipal House of Culture was identified as a relevant building for this work. The study was carried out considering the applicable legislation for the purpose, which encourages the energy improvement of public services, buildings and equipment, namely the Energy Efficiency Program for Public Administration (ECO.AP), applicable to the State, but whose guidelines and good practices can be applied to Local Administration. On the other hand, the Intensive Energy Consumption Management System (SGCIE), with the objective of promoting energy efficiency and monitoring the energy consumption of Intensive Energy Consumer installations (CIE), which, not being the case of the Municipal House of Culture building, as it has an annual consumption of less than 500 tons of oil equivalent (tep), its standards can also be applied voluntarily, in order to comply with the new requirements in terms of the emission of greenhouse gases and promote rational use of energy.During the study, an energy audit was carried out, analyzing the energy supplier's invoices, visiting the building to survey the electrical installation, carrying out energy consumption measures and verifying the building's usage habits. It was decided to focus efforts on the study of lighting equipment, due to its high installed capacity and strong use, as well as the possibility of integrating renewable energies.Six possible ways were identified to make the consumption of electricity more efficient in the building, namely, changing the hourly period for energy billing, carrying out an awareness campaign for its users, installing twilight and presence sensors in various building sites in general and in archive silos in particular, and finally, the installation of photovoltaic solar panels. It is expected, therefore, to allow the reduction of consumption and the reduction of costs with electrical energy in the building, also enabling the integration of renewable energies, as well as encouraging the adoption of good practices in the use of electrical energy and that they can be applied also to other public buildings.
