    Beyond Author-Centricity in Scholarly Editing

    Authorship – authority – authorisation – the author – the author’s will – the author’s intention: these form a cluster of notions whose validity for scholarly editing I fundamentally question. Taking measure from a historical survey of the discipline’s principles and practice from their institution under the dominance of stemmatics up to their main present-day ‘author orientation’ (Shillingsburg 1996), I see the need to split the terms ‘author’ and ‘authorship’ into a pragmatic versus a conceptual aspect. What textual scholarship engages with, directly and tangibly, is not authors but texts (and equally not works but texts), materially inscribed in transmissions. In the materiality and artifice of texts, ‘authoriality’ is accessible conceptually only, in a manner analog-ous to the Foucauldian ‘author function’. Under such premises, as well, ‘authority’, ‘authorisation’ and ‘authorial intention’ become recognisable as exogenous to texts, not integral to them. Consequently, I propose to abandon ‘authority’, ‘authorisation’ and ‘authorial intention’ as overriding principles and arbiters in editorial scholarship. Scholarly editing instead should re-situate itself in relation to texts, to textual criticism, to literary criticism and to literary theory alike, and do so by re-focussing the method-ology of its own practice. It should relinquish the external props termed ‘authorised document’, ‘textual authority’, or ‘authorial intention’ hitherto deferred to. Instead, it should revitalise skills fundamental to inherited editorial scholarship, namely those of critically assessing, and of editorially realising, textual validity. To re-embed editorial scholarship in literary criticism and theory, moreover, the interpretative and hermeneutic dimensions of textual criticism and scholarly editing will need to be freshly mapped

    Aleksandra Śląska as Hedda Gabler

    The article focuses on an analysis of Aleksandra Śląska acting in TVP Theatre play Hedda Gabler (1974) directed by Jan Świderski. By taking part in this artistic undertak-ing, the actress joined the circle of outstanding Ibsen’s actors such as: Karol Adwen-towicz, Irena Solska, Anna Gostyńska or Wanda Siemaszkowa. Śląska, who played gen-eral’s daughter, was prepossessed by character’s ambiguity, intellectual and personal cu-riousness. The actress also saw the timeliness of Ibsen’s drama in regards to emancipa-tion of emotions. Świderski adapted the play written in 1890, referring to an idea of the traditional theater. He perfectly projected the elements of scenography and props, rele-vant from actor’s transformation point of view. Moreover, the director often used a character setup typical for stage theatre – facing forwards to the camera and backwards to the interlocutor. The author of this article points out both perfect changes to Ibsen’s text and the actress’ utilization of interpretation strategy – restrained and hushed play.     p. 1287-1298The growth of Dubai can probably be best seen through the increase in passenger traffic. Over the last years passenger throughput increased from 4.3 million in 1988 to approximately 60 million in 2010. To meet the travel needs of the influx of travellers and airlines, the government of Dubai has committed to a major expansion plan of US $ 4.1 billion for Dubai International Airport and its affiliated divisions. For the recently opened Terminal 3 consisting of Concourse 2 and Concourse 3 (all dedicated to Emirates Airlines) a self-adjusting pre-stressed tension rod façade system has been developed by Knippers Helbig KHing gmbh. It is used for the 84 `teardrop-windows¿, which differ slightly in geometry, within the 950-metre-long building of Concourse 2 as well as for the 58 'teardrop-windows' within Concourse 3. Furthermore the four gable end walls have been designed by KHing gmbh. The structure of the 'teardrop-windows' consists of two orthogonally arranged tension rod strings, which are curved in opposite directions. They are connected to an edge beam and horizontal compression members, therefore an in itself closed static system is formed. Thus no reaction forces caused by pre-tensioning have to be carried by the primary construction. A combination of pinned and restraint free supports causes low constraint forces within the façade system. Consequently the structure is widely decoupled from influences and especially deflections caused by the primary structure. The pre-tensioning level of the facade system is controlled by detailed geometrical specifications either for fabrication stage as well as within the erection phase. Hence the measurement of pre-tension forces can be reduced to random spot checks. This paper presents the particular features of the structural system developed for the 'teardrop windows'. Jedná se o cesty do Francie (1846), během které studuje dějiny francouzské revoluce, dále jeho cestování po Srbsku 1852) a dále je popsána jeho studijní cesta do Brixenu po stopách K. Havlíčka. Závěrem se autor soustředí na pedagogickou cestu po zařízeních pro vzdělávání dívek (1863).The article focused on the life and work of Vilém Gabler and analysed his various journeys and stays abroad: the first being to France (1846), followed by one in Serbia (1852) and to Brixen (1862) in the footsteps of Karel Havlíček.
