Stands on globalization / Manuel Denner
In Jason Inch’s TED talk on Future Globalization is advising that companies need to understand their consumer base in a rapidly changing global business environment. It is clear for everybody that globalization plays one role in this change; however, there are a few variables that are forming the term of globalization, such as mass migration, geopolitical orientation, the Internet and its way of easing communication. Knowledge about cultural differences is a crucial thing and even more important than it was ever before. Therefore corporations are obliged to also take economic and political variables into account if they want to target their respective audience. Moreover, Inch says that companies should be ensured that cultural understanding needs to be trained as well as languages, knowledge about religion, values and “most importantly” about the culinary delights in a given country. Nowadays, it is about transcreating and not about translating when it comes to doing business on an international basis. “Transcreating” is important because of the fact that we are now living in an interconnected world where only translating would not be effective, you have to make things understandable for everybody. Inch also stipulates that cultural awareness is determining success or failure in today’s world. People should build bridges by having that kind of knowledge and not being afraid and run away because they have a lack in intercultural communication. In my opinion, Inch is right in what he is saying; everybody nowadays needs to have intercultural knowledge to drive business forward. It is not only a good asset to have intercultural knowledge; it is a necessity to have it

SURVEY, DIAGNOSIS AND RECOMMENDATIONS RELATED TO WASTE OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT (WEEE) at THE UNIVERSITY OF COIMBRA: A SUSTAINABLE AND CIRCULAR ECONOMY PERSPECTIVE
Humanity's current challenges lies in the current methods of management and impact assessment related to various processes within the productive chain of consumer goods that are increasingly required by contemporary life. At this point, Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) will generate, in 2020, about 53.6 million tons, which means a total of 7.3 kg per person worldwide. However, only 17.4% (9.3Mt) are properly recycled, and represent a potential savings of US $ 10 billion, through circular economy mechanisms, increasing the sustainability of the cycle at all levels.Through the global growth trends of this waste stream, driven by the dissemination of information technology and linked to sustainability, is necessary to overcome the challenges of current WEEE management. This work consisted of analysing the situation regarding this WEEE flow management at the University of Coimbra (UC) through a vision of strategic entrepreneurship. Conducted primarily on a business intelligence approach, which analyses the current situation of the University of Coimbra (UC) that listed the stages of the Life Cycle (LC) in the acquisition, classification, use, damage, recovery, storage and disposal of WEEE. Thus, the information was collected and with the collaboration of the Building, Security and Environment Management Services (SGESA) divided the WEEE management phases at the UC itself, more recently compiling some relevant information about the 155 tons that were properly collected between 2006 and 2019.By understanding the sustainable role of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in building knowledge and forming partnerships to overcome contemporary challenges, four HEIs with an international reputation in the theme were selected: Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and the State University of São Paulo. Thus, a benchmarking was carried out that compared and gathered the main trends available in the online literature, as well as initiatives and projects that efficiently disseminated a sustainable and inclusive WEEE management in all the HEIs analysed. The SWOT strategic analysis, which brings together Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats, was subsequently carried out based on the latest Strategic Plan of the UC General Counsel, mentioning its contextualization and its structural inclinations. Thus, the current situation of projects and know-how was used to conduct a TOWS analysis, which separated four categories of strategic action, separating the Expand, Catch Up, Secure and Minimize strands that intend to help UC managers to make decisions rightly. As the University of Coimbra (UC) is a traditional institution and has listed several levels of growth in its research and development, it has taken an approach on the situation of WEEE in a global and localized way, reaching all aspects of sustainability. Compiling the information within the theme and a WEEE Sustainable Action Plan was proposed within the UC. This plan aims to guide efforts not only in internal management but in the performance of the entire WEEE flow in the academy, to take advantage of the favourable environment of innovation and sustainability
Motion: a novel of young adult fiction and an accompanying exegesis
This practice-led PhD is comprised of a Young Adult Fiction novel entitled Motion, and an accompanying exegesis that reflects upon the ways in which an author employs creative expression and techniques during the creative journey, and the resulting impact of these choices upon the text. A discussion of YAF as a genre is entered into, and a how the novel's exploration of stereotyping, girls and sport, poverty, and violence sit within the context of fiction and adolescent culture
Adolescent Future Orientation: Does Culture Matter?
Future orientation, or the image individuals have of the future, provides the grounds for setting goals and planning, and therefore is considered an important adolescent developmental task. This chapter introduces future orientation research by describing its evolvement from a thematic approach focusing on the content of future domains to a model consisting of three components, discusses its universal and cross-cultural meanings, and reports a replicated finding that across cultures, adolescents share a common core of future orientation domains consisting of education, career, and marriage and family. Based on findings on effects of the family setting on future orientation and an integration of developmental ecology, developmental niche, and bridging multiple worlds models, the author suggests new directions for research especially pertinent for adolescents undergoing social change
The T-S Gradient method, A new method of computing geostrophic currents over large ocean areas
Requirements for indirect computation of geostrophic surface currents over large ocean areas are discussed. These requirements point to a need to simplify standard geostrophic computations, and to separate the first order thermal and haline contributions to geostrophic flow. The equations of motion for geostrophic flow are reviewed and the standard geostrophic computations discussed. Errors and limitations in the geostrophic method are reviewed. Previous attempts to simplify geostrophic computations are discussed and shown to be inadequate for synoptic computation over hemispheric ocean areas. It is shown that the Helland-Hansen equation can be rewritten such that the geostrophic velocity is composed of a temperature structure term and a salinity structure term. How to fight the war for talent - talent management as a tool for creating a committed workforce in German multinational enterprises
Objectives and scope: Today‘s companies face the War for Talent in different ways. To face the challenge of a global talent shortage a recently topic is the Talent Management. This study aimed to find out in how far Talent Management can be used as a tool to succeed in the Talent War through the creation of commitment to ensure talent is available. Furthermore it purposed to discover how Talent Management needs to be designed to create this commitment. In this context not only talents were considered but also those employees who are not evaluated as such. It was aimed to add practical knowledge to the existing literature of how to create commitment through the Talent Management approach concentrating on German Multinational Enterprises which are located in a market with significantly changing demographics.
Methodology: The study is qualitative using semi-structured interviews within six German Multinational Enterprises. Interviews were held with HR managers in order to discover reasons for design and holistic evaluations of commitment throughout the workforce.
Results: Talent Management has the potential to grow commitment of the workforce. Necessary is the combination with other developmental opportunities and transparency in order to avoid favouritism. Ensuring those requirements Talent Management values talents and gives this population a feeling of being recognised which creates a bond to the employer. Transparency, on the other hand, informs non-talents about their areas of development and is able to create the motivation to become a talent. Developmental opportunities moreover avoid the evolvement of second-class-staff. Author keywords: Talent management, commitment, German labour market, MNE, qualitative research, HRM, war for talen
