Toimintasuunnitelma on esitelty luvussa kahdeksan

Introduction to secondary research methods in the built environment

    Get PDF
The use of secondary research methods can offer benefits, particularly when limited time and resources are available for conducting research using primary methods. Researchers are increasingly recognising the immense opportunities in applying secondary methods across various built environment disciplines. However, the lack of systematic guidance and case examples of the application of secondary research methods across various fields can pose a challenge for the inexperienced secondary researcher. In this introductory chapter, an overview of what constitutes secondary research is discussed before reflecting on the secondary research process, secondary research designs and the potential for applying secondary research methods to research in the built environment. The benefits and drawbacks of applying secondary research methods have also been discussed. This chapter ends with an overview of all the chapter contributions by various authors in this book

Manu-1512/Envelopes_Suppressyn: Evolution and antiviral activity of a human protein of retroviral origin

    No full text
Endogenous retroviruses are abundant components of mammalian genomes descended from ancient germline infections. In several mammals, the envelope proteins encoded by these elements protect against exogenous viruses, but this activity has not been documented in human. We report that our genome harbors a large pool of envelope-derived sequences with the potential to restrict retroviral infection. To further test this, we characterize in detail the envelope-derived protein, Suppressyn. We found that Suppressyn is expressed in preimplantation embryos and developing placenta using its ancestral retroviral promoter. Restriction assays in cell culture show that Suppressyn, and its hominoid orthologs, can restrict infection by extant mammalian type D retroviruses. Our data support a generalizable model of retroviral envelope cooption for host immunity and genome defense. Summary We found that the human genome expresses a vast pool of envelope sequences of retroviral origin and provide proof of principle that such proteins can restrict zoonotic viruses

This is an Accepted Manuscript of a book chapter published by Routledge in Secondary Research Methods in the Built Environment on 11/03/2021, available online: https://www.routledge.com/Secondary-Research-Methods-in-the-Built-Environment/Manu-Akotia/p/book/9780367429874 For re-use please see publisher's terms and conditions. With the increasing importance given currently to sustainable development, countries around the world are shifting their focus and efforts to changing the previous unsustainable growth framework. Accordingly, Qatar has decided to introduce a sustainability plan to ensure prosperity through its national vision and strategy plans. In this chapter, a case example has been presented on the application of a systematic literature review according to the PICO model in built environment research based on a study of the efficiency of policies and tactics implemented by the Qatari Government, in its energy sector, pertaining to sustainability strategies. An initial literature search resulted in the identification of 1990 resources within five different databases, of which 82 met the pre-set inclusion and exclusion criteria, including date, geographic location, language, type of publications, participants, and design of studies. The findings showed that six key sustainability initiatives were noteworthy in the Qatar energy sector, which were: health and safety, environment, climate change and energy, economic performance, society, and workforce. The lack of knowledge of the scope of sustainability is a huge challenge for the organisations in the energy sector. The conclusion from this chapter was that the Qatari sustainable development policies still need great efforts to confront their shortcomings, as more holistic policies and more integrated and comprehensive strategies are required
