Web 2.0 technology: Social learning tools in higher education in Saudi Arabia
Information and communication technology (ICT) has created opportunities for students' online interaction in higher education throughout the world. Limited research has been done in this area in Saudi Arabia. This study investigated university students' engagement and perceptions of online collaborative learning using Social Learning Tools (SLTs). In addition, it explored the quality of knowledge construction that occurred in this environment. A mixed methods case study approach was adopted, and the data was gathered from undergraduate students (n=43) who were enrolled in a 15-week course at a Saudi university. The results showed that while the students had positive perceptions towards SLTs and their engagement, data gathered from their work also showed little evidence of high levels of knowledge construction
A Multi-Language Comparison of Influences on Author Verification using Character N-Grams
We create a new multi-language corpus for author verification based on Wikipedia talkpages, and evaluate the influence that differences in topic and time have on character n-gram author profiles. Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. The vanishing author in computer-generated works: a critical analysis of recent Australian case law
Abstract
The use of software is ubiquitous in the creation of many copyright works, yet the requirement in copyright law that every work have a human author who engages in independent intellectual effort means that its use may prevent copyright subsistence. Several recent Australian cases have refocused attention on authorship as an essential criterion of copyright subsistence, and these cases suggest that much computer-produced output may be authorless and thus lack copyright protection. This article, the first in a two-part series, analyses how each case deals with the question of authorship of computer-produced works and why the use of software diminishes copyright protection for a significant number of computer-generated works. The article critiques the application of conventional notions of human authorship developed in the pre-computer age to modern productions and suggests alternative approaches to authorship that satisfy both the major objectives of copyright policy and the need to adapt to the computer age. The article argues that, without a broader judicial approach to authorship of computer-generated works, Parliament must remedy the lacuna in protection for these ‘authorless’ works. Possible solutions for reform are suggested. In a forthcoming article, the author comprehensively examines those reform proposals
Diffusive author(s), cohesive author: Analysis of S/N (1994)
This study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)
Determination the right quantities of food aids for adults in Bera Pahang, Malaysia / Masturina Mansor
Natural disasters occur all over the world, and this event can be totally overwhelming for people's lives and the environments in which they live. Usually, malnutrition is one of the threat during the disaster because people are not being able to get the food. Food crises during disaster and food-related emergencies may cause food security or rather insecurity. Both are underlying causes of malnutrition and mortality and also a significant factor in the longer term livelihood security. This aim of a study is to assess the nutritional status of adult who affected by flood, to determine the food intakes and the availability of the food during flood as well as to determine the right of quantity food aids for affected adults during flood disaster. The study design used was retrospective cohort study and being conducted in Bera, Pahang. A total of 105 individuals are randomly collected from affected by the flood. For the underweight categories, male and female respondent shows 9.1% (n = 3) and 5.6% (n = 4), respectively. After the flood disaster, the median number of food intake for both gender were same with the number of food intake was 3 times per day and they do not have a problem with food insecurity. The suggested total energy for male is 2000 kcal while for female slightly lower, 1700 kcal. The rating for the government support of food aids, 79% (n = 79) of respondents are rate as adequate. As all the access to the town are down, food aids are required in order to make sure people of are affected in the flood can get adequate nutrition and thus indicate greater food security
A comparison of periodization models for muscular strength / Dina Asmadi Mansor
Long-term strength training programme are commonly constructed based on periodization models. The purpose of this study is to determine the more superior periodization model between; Linear Periodization (LP, n=20), Daily Undulating Periodization (DUP, n=19), and Weekly Undulating Periodization (WUP, n=19) in improving maximal strength. Fifty eight (58) recreationally trained college-aged male participants (Age: 22±0.96 years; Height: 162.67±7.97 cm; Mass: 61.02±12.46 kg) with a minimum of 6 months strength training experience were assigned into three experimental groups. Pre and post-test measures used the Bench Press to record upper body strength and Leg Press for lower body strength. A nine (9) weeks exercise programme was implemented 3 days per week. Three (3) sets training for each exercise was prescribed. Training loads at 90% intensity of four (4) repetitions was determined as heavy, 85% intensity of six (6) repetitions for medium, and 80% of eight (8) repetitions as light. All groups showed significant improvements (p 0.05). In conclusion, all the periodization models were effective to elicit higher strength gain with the DUP showing a slight superiority in overall percentage of improvement over LP and WUP
Speech emotion recognition using convolution neural networks and deep stride convolutional neural networks
An assortment of techniques has been presented in the area of Speech Emotion Recognition (SER), where the main focus is to recognize the silent discriminants and useful features of speech signals. These features undergo the process of classification to recognize the specific emotion of a speaker. In recent times, deep learning techniques have emerged as a breakthrough in speech emotion recognition to detect and classify emotions. In this paper, we have modified a recently developed different network architecture of convolutional neural networks, i.e., Deep Stride Convolutional Neural Networks (DSCNN), by taking a smaller number of convolutional layers to increase the computational speed while still maintaining accuracy. Besides, we trained the state-of-art model of CNN and proposed DSCNN on spectrograms generated from the SAVEE speech emotion dataset. For the evaluation process, four emotions angry, happy, neutral, and sad, were considered. Evaluation results show that the proposed architecture DSCNN, with the prediction accuracy of 87.8%, outperforms CNN with 79.4% accuracy
