The fast commercialization of sport world-wide and the increasing demand for sport consumption was met with an equally increasing interest and investment from the side of the media over the years, in order to position themselves as a key intermediate and even supplier to sport. As it is detailed in this entry, this has resulted in sport enjoying the financial and marketing benefits of this development and media holding a key role in the sport ecosystem, being inextricably involved in sport consumption and the development of people's perceptions of sport world-wide, and through this gaining additional power, as well as both financial rewards and branding benefits. As the entry discusses, there currently exists a sensitive power balance between sport and the media, making media relations an ever developing area within the sport industry, with sport organizations and media investing extra attention in maintaining this relationship and balancing the delicate and easy-to-tilt power balance ..

    Match Manipulation

    No full text
Match-fixing or the manipulation of sport competitions is a phenomenon that has been attracting increasing attention in recent years, due to the number of incidents emerging in sport world-wide. While match-fixing is not a new phenomenon, its complexity in the way in which it manifests within sport has yet to be fully captured, potentially obstructing any efforts to challenge it. This entry provides an account of the various types of match-fixing, the actors, processes, and organisational structures involved, as well as its often close link with betting, in order to better capture the phenomenon at hand. It also offers a discussion on the increasing international and national efforts to combat the manipulation of sport competitions world-wide and protect sport's integrity, including legal provisions, policy responses and educational initiatives, as well as on the disparity of the practices and their implementation in different settings around the world

    Triple Bottom Line

    No full text
The concept of the Triple Bottom Line has emerged as a fundamental framework in sustainability literature, providing a holistic approach to organizational success that extends beyond traditional financial metrics. Coined by John Elkington in the 1990s, the TBL introduces three interconnected elements-economic, social, and environmental-which collectively redefine the parameters of corporate responsibility and performance. This entry delves into the foundational elements of the Triple Bottom Line, examining the unique contributions of each dimension and the collective impact they wield in fostering sustainable practices within organizations. Following the analysis of each of its dimensions, economic, social and environmental, and how each links to three distinct aspects of sustainability (financial, social and environmental) both within and beyond sport, we discuss how the Triple Bottom Line has begun to be used as a framework to evaluate and access sport events, with some initial resul..

Operational crisis communication management: a content analysis of FIFA’s communication during Covid-19

    No full text
Despite the high number of crises encountered within sport, crisis communication management in sport remains understudied. Operational crisis communication in particular can be considered an uncharted territory, regardless of its potential significant effects on sport organisations’ reputation. In this study we explore the themes used in FIFA’s communication during the Covid-19 pandemic, to understand how operational organisational crisis communication was managed by football’s leading sport organisation in this unprecedented climate. Content analysis is conducted in all FIFA’s press releases and Twitter messages related to Covid-19 from March 5th to July 3rd 2020, in order for insights to be offered to the content and meaning of FIFA’s operational crisis communication, their attempts to emphasise the organisation’s positive traits and actions, and the links built with managing and improving the organisation’s reputation. The analysis of the themes used indicates that proactive planning of crisis communication management had been conducted, while lessons from previous handling of crises appear to have been learned. By outlining the crisis communication strategy adopted by FIFA, we offer insights to the unexplored area of operational crisis communication in sports, while presenting a roadmap for operational crisis communication management for other sport organisations and future studies exploring the topic

Ceccon A, Gambaro A, Manoli F, et al. Synthesis and structure of tricarbonylchromium mono-, bis- and tris-complexes of 10-methyltribenzotriquinacene. Journal of the Chemical Society, Perkin Transactions 2, Physical Organic Chemistry. 1991;2(2):233-241.Complexation of 10-methyltribenzotriquinacene (MTBT) a bent triarene of C3v symmetry afforded six mono-, bis- and tris-Cr(CO)3complexed isomers which have been isolated and identified. The results of various synthetic experiments indicate that complexation at the convex side of a free benzene ring is favoured, probably for steric reasons. As compared with the isomer complexed at the convex face (anti), that complexed at the concave one (syn) is less stable. The 1H and 13C NMR spectral data together with the X-ray structures of the two bis- and one tris-complexes account for the lower stability of the syn isomers
