Enhancing process models to improve business performance:a methodology and case studies
\u3cp\u3eProcess mining is not only about discovery and conformance checking of business processes. It is also focused on enhancing processes to improve the business performance. While from a business perspective this third main stream is definitely as important as the others if not even more, little research work has been conducted. The existing body of work on process enhancement mainly focuses on ensuring that the process model is adapted to incorporate behavior that is observed in reality. It is less focused on improving the performance of the process. This paper reports on a methodology that creates an enhanced model with an improved performance level. The enhancements of the model limit incorporated behavior to only those parts that do not violate any business rules. Finally, the enhanced model is kept as close to the original model as possible. The practical relevance and feasibility of the methodology is assessed through two case studies. The result shows that the process models improved through our methodology, in comparison with state-of the art techniques, have improved KPI levels while still adhering to the desired prescriptive model.\u3c/p\u3
Investigating the Influence of Data-Aware Process States on Activity Probabilities in Simulation Models: Does Accuracy Improve?
Business process simulation enables analysts to run a process in different scenarios, compare its performances and consequently provide indications on how to improve a business process. Process simulation requires one to provide a simulation model, which should accurately reflect reality to ensure the reliability of the simulation findings. An accurate simulation model passes through a correct stochastic modelling of the activity firings: activities are associated with the probability of each to fire. Literature determines these probabilities by looking at the frequency of the activity occurrences when they are enabled. This is a coarse determination, because this way does not consider the actual process state, which might influence the probabilities themselves (e.g., a thorough loan assessment is more likely for larger loan requests). The process state is as a faithful abstraction of the process instance execution so far, including the process-variable values, the activity firing history, etc. This paper aims to investigate how process states can be leveraged to improve activity firing probabilities. A technique has been put forward and compared with the baseline where basic branching probabilities are employed. Experimental results show that, indeed, business simulation models are more accurate to replicate the real process’ behavior

Event Abstraction in Process Mining – Literature Review and Taxonomy
The execution of processes in companies generates traces of event data, stored in the underlying information system(s), capturing the actual execution of the process. Analyzing event data, i.e., the focus of process mining, yields a detailed understanding of the process, e.g., we are able to discover the control flow of the process and detect compliance and performance issues. Most process mining techniques assume that the event data are of the same and/or appropriate level of granularity. However, in practice, the data are extracted from different systems, e.g., systems for customer relationship management, Enterprise Resource Planning, etc., record the events at different granularity levels. Hence, pre-processing techniques that allow us to abstract event data into the right level of granularity are vital for the successful application of process mining. In this paper, we present a literature study, in which we assess the state-of-the-art in the application of such event abstraction techniques in the field of process mining. The survey is accompanied by a taxonomy of the existing approaches, which we exploit to highlight interesting novel directions
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Jersey Homesteads (later the Borough of Roosevelt) was established in the 1930s as an agro-industrial cooperative community. It was established specifically for urban Jewish garment workers, many of whom had emigrated from Europe. President John F. Kennedy sent a telegram to the citizens of Roosevelt, New Jersey, apologizing for not being able to attend the memorial dedication in honor of former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. (Jersey Homesteads became Roosevelt in 1945 in honor of the president.) President Kennedy expressed his gratitude to the people of Roosevelt for constructing the memorial, and commented that it will serve as a constant reminder of Roosevelt's good works
Logarithmic variance profiles and the corresponding f-1 spectra of temperature fluctuations in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection
We report experimental results for the temperature variance 2(z) and the corresponding frequency spectra P(f) in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) in a cylindrical sample of aspect ratioT= D/L = 1:00 (D = 1:12 m is the diameter and L = 1:12 m the height). The measurements were conducted in the Rayleigh-number range 1011 < Ra < 1:35 1014 and Pr ' 0:8. For Ra = 1:35x1014, 2(z) could be described well by a logarithmic dependence on the vertical position z in a range of z 1 < z < z 2 with z 1 ' 70 and z 2 = 0:1L. Here L=(2Nu) is the thickness of a thin thermal sublayer adjacent to the horizontal plate where the heat flux (denoted by the Nusselt number Nu) is carried mostly by thermal diffusion. In the log layer, we found that the temperature spectra had a significant frequency range over which P(f) f with close to 1. As Ra decreased, increased so that the log layer became thinner. At Ra = 2:05 1011, z 2 < z 1 and therefore there was no range for a log layer. Correspondingly, the temperature spectrum near the horizontal plate did not have the f1 scaling form either
