The Role of Maintenance and Facility Management in Logistics: A Literature Review

    No full text
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to provide a literature review on the different ways of carrying out Facility Management and related topics in order to uncover that there is limited research regarding the impact of Facility Management on the logistics and operational performance of warehouses. Design/methodology/approach - Four different focus areas have been identified and for each one different methodologies and streams of research have been studied. Findings - The study underlines the importance of Facility Management for the logistics operations; therefore it supports the notion that investments aiming at preserving the status of the building and service components of warehouses are crucial. Originality/value - This paper aims to suggest to Facility Management managers that they can contribute to enhance business performance by designing effective Facility Management strategie

Measuring the Effects of an Anti-Food-Waste Digital Application from the Operators’ Perspective in Urban Contexts

This paper presents an empirical study focused on the use of TooGoodToGo smartphone applications by urban food retailers and HoReCa sector owners, evaluating their satisfaction levels with using this app and identifying the most relevant business levers that might convince other operators to adopt anti-waste programs and more sustainable behaviors. To this end, a survey questionnaire is administered to a sample of respondents. Data are statistically analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis test to consider the different perspectives of the identified subsamples. The results reveal that business operators claim to have a high level of satisfaction with exploiting the service provided by the app and that it is a lever for increasing the number of customers served, even if there is not a high positive effect on revenue. However, retailers with more years of operations, who can be considered more experienced, can better exploit the opportunities of the TGTG business. This study contributes to a better understanding of the benefits of using web application services to decrease waste from urban food retailers. Consequently, levers for convincing new operators to adopt the service and their role in increasing customer awareness are identified and discussed

Review of Relevant Literature on Modelling and Simulation Approaches for AS/RSs

    No full text
Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems support warehouse processes to improve production and logistics efficiency, reducing operating times and costs. In recent years, much attention has been paid on evaluating the performance of these systems using different simulation and modelling approaches. However, the current body of literature is quite fragmented and there is the need for a holistic overview of published scientific literature. To this end, this work presents a literature review in order to adequately identify relevant scientific trends and, consequently, the main research gaps in dealing with the systems under study. From the analysis of the obtained corpus of papers it can be observed that Shuttle Based Storage and Retrieval Systems are the most studied solutions, the most adopted approach is Discrete Event Simulation and operational impacts are the most frequently considered. By focusing on the research gaps, it can be highlighted that the validation process of the chosen methodology is often overlooked and the economic and ergonomic impacts are barely addressed

CARITAS IN VERITATE, MARKET AND FIRMS The Catholic Church’s Position on Economy. An Interview by Renato Mangano

Pope Benedict XVI, after writing the encyclicals “Deus Caritas Est” and “Spe Salvi”, wrote in 2009 the third letter of an ideal trilogy: “Caritas in Veritate”. A lawyer who is also a believer might feel uncomfortable reading a prescriptive text which is – for understandable reasons – more abstract than a legal text or an academic paper. But when the same lawyer recovers from the first impact, he may find the recent encyclical more familiar than he would have thought. He will, in any case, find it extremely stimulating; he can trace the results of the lively debate about the structure and function of legal rights and of the preference accorded to an approach which is not only conceptual (or formal) but also “explanatory” (of rights, their nature, their function, etc.); he comes across many legal issues, as well as questions about the role of the state in a free market economy, the anthropological background of corporate social responsibility and the individuation of the duties of company directors, and other themes which are directly or indirectly discussed in this Review. These issues were addressed by Prof. Zamagni, who gave the following interview to Renato Mangano

Risk factors influencing the debt leverage of project financing initiatives in the energy industry

    No full text
Purpose - This paper aims to contribute to understanding the crucial influence of risks on the capital structure of project financing (PF) initiatives in the energy sector. Design/methodology/approach - The debt leverage of a capital investment is selected as the response variable, and its relation with select identified risk factors is examined using a regression analysis on a data set of 72 projects carried out all over the world in the energy industry. Findings - Results have highlighted that the debt leverage is significantly influenced by several sources of risk measured through specific indicators, namely, country stability index, the construction duration, the concession period and the average size of partners. Therefore, country, project and special purpose vehiclerelated risks have been shown to have an impact on the debt leverage of a PF scheme. Research limitations/implications - The results could support both investors and lenders to better define the financial leverage of projects delivered under a PF mechanism. In particular, the study could help to have a better understanding of the main factors that influence the debt leverage in PF initiatives. Originality/value - This paper contributes to filling the lack of works addressing the relationship between risk factors and capital structure in PF projects. In this way, this research leads to a better understanding of the risk factors that influence the capital structure of a PF initiative, and they have, therefore, been proposed as a basis for the establishment of improved methods to design refined capital structures

Evolutionary trends in smart city initiatives

Smart Cities (SC) have claimed to improve the quality of life of citizens, but the notion of SC is variegated and it has been changing its form. As a contribution to understand the evolutionary trends of Smart Cities, this paper analyzes the characteristics of SC programs, and the role of a set of contextual variables of SC projects adoption has been investigated. The results reveal that big innovative cities are less willing to develop SC projects, that in the building domain are driven by innovative trends and projects in the energy sector depend on the level of wealth

Relationship between logistic service and maintenance costs of warehouses

    No full text
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to prove that maintenance cost of warehouses is correlated to the performance of the logistic business, together with other relevant operational factors.Design/methodology/approachThe relationships between indicators of logistic service level performance are examined using a linear regression analysis of a dataset collected from a number of distribution facilities operated by a leading global freight provider throughout Italy.FindingsExpenditures in building maintenance contribute to improve the punctuality of deliveries with resulting improved quality of customer service.Research limitations/implicationsFurther research may gainfully generalise the model by examining other geographical areas and longer observation periods.Practical implicationsIt is suggested that logistic buildings have to be maintained not only to preserve the functional and economic value of the asset, but also to strengthen the competitive advantage of the logistic business.Originality/valueThe business performance is very likely to be influenced not only by variables related to the business process, but also by non‐operational factors, such as warehouse building performance.</jats:sec
