CARITAS IN VERITATE, MARKET AND FIRMS The Catholic Church’s Position on Economy. An Interview by Renato Mangano

Pope Benedict XVI, after writing the encyclicals “Deus Caritas Est” and “Spe Salvi”, wrote in 2009 the third letter of an ideal trilogy: “Caritas in Veritate”. A lawyer who is also a believer might feel uncomfortable reading a prescriptive text which is – for understandable reasons – more abstract than a legal text or an academic paper. But when the same lawyer recovers from the first impact, he may find the recent encyclical more familiar than he would have thought. He will, in any case, find it extremely stimulating; he can trace the results of the lively debate about the structure and function of legal rights and of the preference accorded to an approach which is not only conceptual (or formal) but also “explanatory” (of rights, their nature, their function, etc.); he comes across many legal issues, as well as questions about the role of the state in a free market economy, the anthropological background of corporate social responsibility and the individuation of the duties of company directors, and other themes which are directly or indirectly discussed in this Review. These issues were addressed by Prof. Zamagni, who gave the following interview to Renato Mangano

This is the recording of the Title IX: Educate & Educate Webcast with Dr. Kathleen Mangano being interviewed by Damon Markiewicz. It was filmed in the Karpovich Room in the Learning Commons on the campus of Springfield College on August 23, 2022. It is about 26 minutes long. In this webcast, Dr. Kathy Mangano gets to tell her history with Title IX, including her experiences on the campus of Springfield College. This is one of the webcasts created by Dr. Kathy Mangano during her time as a Distinguished Professor of Humanics. Webcasts were dropped on the 9th of every month from September 2022 to April 2023. The webcasts consisted of interviews conducted with a diverse group of individuals (e.g., expert/historian, researcher, sexual assault victim, students, former coach, athletic directors, and a/our Title IX coordinator). The Interviewees provided educational information, told a personal story about how Title IX impacted them, and shared one piece of advice on how to advocate for Title IX.Humanics is a word that has a special meaning in the history and philosophy of Springfield College, as well as in the college’s motto of “Spirit, Mind, and Body.” The Oxford English Dictionary defines Humanics as, “the subject or study of human affairs or relations, especially of the human element of a problem or situation as opposed to the mechanical.” In 1962, Dr. Glenn Olds, President of Springfield College at the time, began to wonder why this name was given to the intended philosophy of the college by Dr. Laurence Locke Doggett, Springfield College’s first full-time president. Olds acknowledged that the practices of the faculty were in large part consistent with the Humanics philosophy, but he believed that a more self-conscious application would improve chances of its continuity and survival. To ensure this, a Distinguished Professor of Humanics position was created at the college, first filled by Dr. Seth Arsenian from 1966-1969. The purpose of this position was to catalyze a renewal of consciousness in the philosophy. This was done by annually mandating the Distinguished Professor of Humanics to give a Humanics lecture on the definition of Humanics and what the concept means to them. Arsenian started this tradition in 1967 with his speech titled, “The Meaning of Humanics,” in which he described the concept as a set of ideas, values, and goals that make our college distinct from other colleges and make commitment and unity toward commonly sought goals possible

When these necessary preconditions are fulfilled, in many cases it is design. In some other situations, it is just a matter of finding a strategy to light up night dinners under the starry sky. In the Introduction of Ocula 24 we investigate the conditions that favor the emergence of design processes typical of design and of its evolution, up to social design which, by overcoming incremental and inertial innovations, drives radical social innovatio
