Critical Design in Context
Critical Design is becoming an increasingly influential discipline, affecting policy and practice in a range of fields. Matt Malpass’s book is the first to introduce critical design as a field, providing a history of the discipline, outlining its key influences, theories and approaches, and explaining how critical design can work in practice through a range of contemporary examples. Critical Design moves away from traditional approaches that limit design’s role to the production of profitable objects, focusing instead on a practice that is interrogative, discursive and experimental. Using a wide range of examples from contemporary practice, and drawing on interviews with key practitioners, Matt Malpass provides an introduction to critical design practice and a manifesto for how a radical and unorthodox practice might provide design answers in an age of austerity and ecological crisis.</JATS1:p

Matt Eicheldinger, B.A. \u2709, M.A. \u2712 is an educator who used stories from his life to motivate his middle school students. When he found that not only were these stories effective, when written down, they inspired even the most reluctant of readers. This put Matt down a path of becoming a published author. In 2021, he launched a Kickstarter campaign to self-publish Matt Sprouts and The Curse of Ten Broken Toes. When the book became a hit, he was able to sign with an agent who quickly sold Matt Sprouts to a publisher. Perspectives on Critical Design: a Conversation with Ralph Ball and Maxine Naylor
This paper features an edited conversation with designers Ralph Ball and Maxine Naylor. It explores their thinking in relation to critical design.
In the preface to 'Form Follows Idea' (Ball & Naylor, 2005) Jeremy Myerson describes Ball and Naylor as being regarded among Britain’s most thoughtful furniture designers.
In 1985 Ball formed a design partnership with Maxine Naylor a reputable experimental designer maker. Together they began to challenge the boarders between art, craft and design. They have exhibited work internationally and held teaching positions in colleges in the UK and USA. Over the course of a decade from 1985 Ball taught on Furniture, Jewellery and Industrial design at the Royal College of Art where Naylor taught on Furniture Design, directing the course between 1995 and 1998. Today Ralph Ball is Professor of Design at Central Saint Martins University of the Arts London and Maxine Naylor is Professor of Design and Director of the Design Research Institute University of Brighton.
Through practice and academic tenure they have developed a distinctive approach to practice based research and refined their critical perspectives. They describe themselves as critical designers and use design as a critical, visual discourse to communicate ideas about design culture and society today. Taking experimentation as a research method they subject their ideas to a critical process of refutation. They question the work through a scholarly approach that challenges protocols of design to enhance the design profession.
In this conversation the designer’s concepts of ‘open-process’ and ‘design poetics’ are discussed. They describe their role acting as critics of design from within design practice. They outline their thoughts on the increasingly un-ideological culture of industrial design. They describe how through playful experiment they question the value of repetition in design and mass production of products. They do this by taking modernist axioms to extremes and ‘embedding narrative’ into objects as commentary on the state of contemporary design.
Supplementing the conversation the author offers his reflections. Primarily this exposes a form of critical design that differs significantly from popular and often technologically orientated notions of critical design

Contextualising Critical Design: Towards a Taxonomy of Critical Practice in Product Design
This study focuses on critical design practice. The research challenges the colloquial understanding of ‘critical design.’ It problematises, defines and reassesses the concept of ‘critical design’ situating it among other forms of critical design practice.
The research reviews the field of activity from a historical perspective. It reviews contemporary activity in contexts of design research and the gallery system to establish domain authorities and theoretical perspectives that inform critical design practice. The research draws from a body of literature relating to design theory and critical design practice to identify several important themes by which to discuss the practice.
The research employs a hermeneutic methodology and engages expert ‘critical’ designers through a series of conversational interviews. The interviews are analysed using code to theory methods of inductive qualitative analysis and subjected to hermeneutic analysis that draws on the extensive contextual review. Salient concepts found in the discourse are extracted, theorised and organised to create taxonomy of critical design practice.
In the taxonomy, the field of critical design practice is categorised by three types of practice: Associative Design, Speculative Design and Critical Design. These three practices are differentiated by topics addressed in each and further differentiated by the type of Satire, Narrative and Object Rationality used in each practice.
The original contribution of this research is a Taxonomy of critical practice in product design, which consists of a written and visual dimension. The taxonomy acts as a discursive tool to chart design activity and it illustrates the diversity in critical design practice beyond the colloquial understanding of ‘critical design’.
The taxonomy presents three distinct types of critical design practice; it outlines the design methods used to establish the critical move through design and identifies the contexts where critical design is practiced. It can be used to compare projects, chart designers’ activity over time, illustrate trajectories of practice and identify themes in practice. The taxonomy provides theoretical apparatus to analyse the field. Such analysis contributes towards a discussion on critical design within design studies

Teaching design and emotion in the foundation year : an industrial design approach
This paper showcases two design tools; the ‘storyboard’ and ‘a day in the life’ demonstrated to design students in their foundational year (first year) of study. By employing these tools during the design process the aim was to provoke students to consider and design for emotional experiences for potential users. The assessment asked students to design an MP3 player using these tools. This is demonstrated through a student project that successfully used the tools and method introduced. The teaching theory, project context, student outcome as well as challenges faced by students using this approach are discussed. The paper concludes with implications for teaching emotion theory at an undergraduate level and potential future directions

Chaos and creativity of play : designing emotional engagement in public spaces
How do we create strong urban narratives? How do we create affection for our cities? Play, an essential part of any species' biological existence and development, can often be perceived as chaotic and derogatory to social and spatial order. Play is also often perceived as a creative force which generates social and spatial value. This paper looks at the design approaches to both chaotic and creative perceptions of publics at play in urban space. Commonly, Urban and Architectural Design constitutes reactive management of perceived chaos, which derogatorily effects our sensory and emotional engagement with space. \ud

Alternatively, Urban and Architectural Design can appeal to the creativity of play, by encouraging unsolicited novelty that is vital to strong experiential narratives in the city and iterating environments that encourage the emergence of physical, emotional and cultural invention. \ud
