    A multi-criteria analysis as a rational evaluation process for building a new highway in Italy

    The low accessibility of transportation to the main Italian touristic places (during the summer period) produces road congestion that is often high and negative environmental impacts (externalities). This is the case of the coastal area between Cesena and Venice, which is particularly affected by this phenomenon because of a unique local road, the Romea: it allows car trips among all these touristic places. Beginning from these considerations, the realization of a new highway was proposed, to improve transport accessibility to this area. A Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA) was identified as the rational evaluation process to verify the sustainability (economic, social and environmental) of this transportation project. The aim of this paper is to describe the MCA evaluation analyses applied to this case study, underlining the main results obtained. One of the main findings of the research was the applied evaluation methodology. A rational and participated weights definition criterion process was implemented, through a “Delphi method” within a Public Engagement process. The MCA results show that the best design alternative is the construction of a highway plus the realization of a “green-way”. Furthermore, we found that the estimated non-user's benefit incidence was about 80% of the total, underlining the appropriateness in using this evaluation method, useful to better quantify non-monetary externalities (versus the cost-benefit analysis). Finally, to verify the robustness of the results we also performed a sensitivity analysis, confirming the main results

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Recent achievements of the Pd-Ag membrane technologies in tritium extraction system applications

    The main expertise of the Membrane Laboratory of ENEA Frascati is related to the study and development of Pd-based membrane technologies (both permeators and membrane reactors), which are one of the reference processes in the fuel cycle of nuclear fusion reactors. Principal characteristics of Pd-based membranes are infinite hydrogen selectivity, high hydrogen permeability, continuous operation and modularity. In the last few years, the ENEA-Frascati laboratory has erected two experimental facilities for the study of decontamination performance of single and multi-tube Pd-Ag membrane modules. Several experimental and simulation activities have been carried out to investigate the possible application of these technologies in the tritium extraction system of the solid breeder blanket concept. Firstly, the paper describes the proposal for the back-up solution of a tritium extraction system for HCPB based on membrane technologies. Then, the most significant results obtained for the decontamination of water and H2 permeation using two different facilities are presented and discussed. The main difference among the two facilities is the number of Pd-Ag tubes installed. Water decontamination experiments have been performed to investigate the effect of different catalysts. The results obtained with the water gas shift reactions are discussed in terms of reactor performance (i.e., decontamination factor) and methane production in the lumen side. During the He-H2 permeation experiments several operating conditions (e.g., membrane's temperature, lumen pressure, etc.) have been investigated. The effect of the He-H2 feed ratio (which impacts the driving force across the membrane) gives an interesting and unique view of the membrane module performance in terms of permeation efficiency

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Design and first experimental results of a new multi-tube Pd-Ag membrane module

    Pd-Ag membranes are well-proven technologies in nuclear fusion fuel cycles especially for what concerns the Q2 (Q = H, D, T) recovery from the tokamak exhaust gas stream. Due to their ability in separating Q2 from other gaseous species, they are also proposed to be implemented in the tritium extraction and recovery system of the DEMO helium cooled pebble bed (HCPB) blanket. Inside the HCPB, the produced tritium is recovered by purging with a large He flow doped with H2 (0.1%wt). Thus the gas stream leaving the blanket will contain a very low Q2 and Q2O concentration diluted in a large amount of He. The paper presents the design and the first experimental results of a new facility, named MeSMeR, erected at ENEA Frascati. The facility hosts a multi-tube module made of 10 Pd-Ag tubes (total surface area of 0.16 m2 and average thickness of 116 μm). The membrane module has been assembled by using a modified tube connection. The aim is to assess the Q2 permeation efficiency of the membrane module under several operating conditions and, particularly, by varying the He/H2 feeding ratio and the total feed flow rate

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
