Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Integrated water resources management and sustainable development strategy in a changing climate: the case study of the Mygdonia water basin
No full textMygdonia water basin constitutes a characteristic example of non-sustainable water management in the southern Europe. During the last decades, Lakes Koronia and Volvi which are located in the Mygdonia basin and constitute the fifth and second largest natural lakes, respectively, in Greece as well as the Mygdonia basin aquifer have undergone severe quantitative degradation. The main objectives of the Doctoral Thesis are the study of the future surface water and groundwater resources availability in the Mygdonia basin and the proposal of sustainable management strategies in order to ensure the environmental protection, the economic development and the social cohesion in the study area. At first, all the necessary hydrological, environmental, economic, social and other data regarding the study area were collected. Then, historical precipitation and temperature data were collected and correlation and homogenization checks were performed. The future climate of the Mygdonia basin was projected until 2100. Afterwards, an integrated coupled system of four hydrological models was developed for the surface water and the Mygdonia basin aquifer simulation. In particular, the surface water balance of the Mygdonia basin, the groundwater flow in the Mygdonia basin, the water exchange between the Lakes Koronia and Volvi and the Mygdonia basin aquifer and the water balance of the two lakes were simulated. The hydrological analysis that was carried out resulted that a negative water balance is expected for the Mygdonia basin aquifer and Lakes Koronia and Volvi until 2100. Therefore, there is a necessity for management scenarios study and management strategies proposal for the restoration of the water bodies of the Mygdonia basin. Six management scenarios were proposed and examined which include water supply management scenarios, water demand management scenarios and a scenario of economic sustainability of the Mygdonia water basin. The combination of the sustainable and most efficient management scenarios resulted to the development and proposal of three management strategies. The first management strategy refers to the implementation of an agricultural fallow land measure reducing the total irrigated agricultural land, the second strategy aims to promote the livestock sector in the study area as a competitive development pathway while reducing the area of water consuming crops and promoting energy crops, and the third management strategy concerns the promotion of drip irrigation systems while reducing the water consuming crops and promoting the cost-effective crops.Η λεκάνη απορροής Μυγδονίας αποτελεί χαρακτηριστικό παράδειγμα μη βιώσιμης διαχείρισης υδατικών πόρων στη νότια Ευρώπη. Κατά τη διάρκεια των τελευταίων δεκαετιών, οι λίμνες Κορώνεια και Βόλβη, οι οποίες χωροθετούνται εντός της λεκάνης Μυγδονίας και αποτελούν την πέμπτη και δεύτερη μεγαλύτερη φυσική λίμνη, αντίστοιχα, στην Ελλάδα καθώς και ο υπόγειος υδροφορέας της λεκάνης Μυγδονίας, υπέστησαν σοβαρή ποσοτική υποβάθμιση. Οι κύριοι στόχοι της Διδακτορικής Διατριβής είναι η διερεύνηση της μελλοντικής διαθεσιμότητας των επιφανειακών και υπόγειων υδατικών πόρων της λεκάνης Μυγδονίας και η πρόταση στρατηγικών βιώσιμης διαχείρισης για τη διασφάλιση της περιβαλλοντικής προστασίας, της οικονομικής ανάπτυξης και της κοινωνικής συνοχής στην περιοχή έρευνας. Αρχικά, συγκεντρώθηκαν όλα τα απαραίτητα υδρολογικά, περιβαλλοντικά, οικονομικά, κοινωνικά και λοιπά δεδομένα για την περιοχή έρευνας. Έπειτα, συλλέχθηκαν ιστορικά δεδομένα βροχόπτωσης και θερμοκρασίας και πραγματοποιήθηκαν έλεγχοι συσχέτισης και ομοιογένειας. Ακολούθως, πραγματοποιήθηκε πρόγνωση του μελλοντικού κλίματος της λεκάνης απορροής Μυγδονίας έως το 2100. Στη συνέχεια, αναπτύχθηκε ένα ολοκληρωμένο συζευγμένο σύστημα τεσσάρων υδρολογικών μοντέλων για την προσομοίωση των επιφανειακών υδάτων και του υπόγειου υδροφορέα της λεκάνης Μυγδονίας. Ειδικότερα, προσομοιώθηκαν το επιφανειακό υδατικό ισοζύγιο της λεκάνης Μυγδονίας, η υπόγεια ροή στη λεκάνη Μυγδονίας, η υδραυλική επικοινωνία των λιμνών Κορώνειας και Βόλβης με τον υπόγειο υδροφορέα και το υδατικό ισοζύγιο των δύο λιμνών. Η υδρολογική ανάλυση που πραγματοποιήθηκε οδήγησε στο συμπέρασμα ότι αναμένεται ελλειμματικό υδατικό ισοζύγιο για τον υπόγειο υδροφορέα της λεκάνης Μυγδονίας και για τις λίμνες Κορώνεια και Βόλβη έως το 2100. Κρίθηκε, επομένως, απαραίτητη η διερεύνηση σεναρίων διαχείρισης και η πρόταση στρατηγικών διαχείρισης, με σκοπό την αποκατάσταση των υδατικών σωμάτων της λεκάνης απορροής Μυγδονίας. Προτάθηκαν και διερευνήθηκαν έξι σενάρια που περιλαμβάνουν σενάρια διαχείρισης της προσφοράς νερού, σενάρια διαχείρισης της ζήτησης νερού και σενάριο οικονομικής βιωσιμότητας της λεκάνης απορροής Μυγδονίας. Ο συνδυασμός των βιώσιμων και πλέον αποτελεσματικών σεναρίων διαχείρισης οδήγησε στη διαμόρφωση και πρόταση τριών στρατηγικών διαχείρισης. Η πρώτη στρατηγική διαχείρισης αφορά την εφαρμογή του μέτρου της αγρανάπαυσης με μείωση της συνολικής αρδευόμενης αγροτικής έκτασης, η δεύτερη στρατηγική στοχεύει στην ενίσχυση του κτηνοτροφικού τομέα της περιοχής έρευνας ως ανταγωνιστική αναπτυξιακή επιλογή με παράλληλη μείωση των υδροβόρων καλλιεργειών και προώθηση των ενεργειακών καλλιεργειών και η τρίτη στρατηγική διαχείρισης αφορά την προώθηση των συστημάτων στάγδην άρδευσης με παράλληλη μείωση των υδροβόρων και προώθηση των οικονομικά αποδοτικών καλλιεργειών

Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
