Developments in the hydrogenation of challenging substrates utilising transition metal complexes
This thesis describes the developments of new protocols for the hydrogenation of challenging substrates. Three specific substrates were highlighted for study after an initial review of the literature; benzofurans, esters and bulky ketones.
Chapter 1 details a review of the hydrogenation of challenging unsaturated substrates, highlighting areas where development is still required.
Chapter 2 describes studies on the hydrogenation of 2,3-benzofuran. While a benzofuran hydrogenation catalysts was optimised, severe conditions were required to facilitate the reaction, and not found to be applicable for more elaborate substrates. We therefore considered an alternative process of enantioselective hydrogenation of benzofuranyl ketones followed by heterogeneous hydrogenation. A good process for transfer hydrogenation of a range of these hitherto unstudied substrates was developed along with greater understanding.
The hydrogenation of esters is another challenge in the catalytic reduction field, so was also selected for study, with the results described in Chapter 3. After screening a range of catalysts of types [RuCl₂ (diphosphine)(diamine)] and [RuCl₂ (PNX)(DMSO)], good catalysts were identified. Successful hydrogenation of a range of esters, under mild conditions was achieved using [RuCl₂ (1,3-bisdiphenylphosphinepropane)(2-aminomethylpyridine)] using high concentrations of base co-catalyst. [RuCl₂ ((2-(diphenylphosphanylbenzyl)ethane-1,2-diamine)(DMSO)] combined with 15-25 mol% of a basic co-catalyst have been shown to be active at near ambient conditions in the hydrogenation of aromatic esters.
Chapter 4 related to studies where the activity of Ru, Ir and Rh complexes of the same tridentate ligand were tested in the hydrogenation of ketones that would be regarded as sluggish substrates. Highly active and selective catalysts for the hydrogenation of bulky acetophenone derivatives were found using iridium complexes of PNX ligands (formed in situ). The highest selectivity was obtained with acetophenone substrates containing iso-propyl and cyclohexyl substituents, or medicinally important piperdinyl groups. In the best cases over 90% e.e. was observed with high conversions and with only 0.1 mol% of catalyst
Author interview: Q and A with Dr Ian Sanjay Patel on we’re here because you were there: immigration and the end of empire
In this author interview, we speak to Dr Ian Sanjay Patel about his new book, We’re Here Because You Were There: Immigration and the End of Empire, which explores post-war immigration laws, the afterlives of British imperial citizenship and related attempts to reimagine and rejuvenate British imperialism after 1945. Contributing to transnational histories of decolonisation, the book also explores the interconnections between human rights, post-war migration and international diplomacy. Ian Black oral history interview by Deborah Anderson Silvers, November 2, 2007
Oral history interview with Ian Black, drum major in the Herd of Thunder Marching Band. Black, a music major, began playing clarinet in sixth grade and was a drum major in his high school\u27s marching band. Being in Herd of Thunder was one of his goals upon entering USF, and in his sophomore year he auditioned for drum major. This interview was conducted during his junior year, his second year as drum major. In this interview, Black describes his first year in the band, the process of becoming a drum major, and explains some of the band\u27s traditions

Ian Bogost at X-Media Lab: serious gaming
Video games are usually viewed as a form of escapism: pure entertainment and shoot-em-up fantasy. But increasingly, games are being recognised as educational tools, or as deliverers of social or political messages. This evolving medium is taking on complex environments and issues, and providing a platform for people to explore a world or situation in an interactive way. In this talk at the X Media Lab in Sydney, video game theorist and designer Ian Bogost gives an overview of how video games can benefit human existence.
Ian Bogost is author of "Unit Operations: An Approach to Videogame Criticism", recently listed among "50 books for everyone in the game industry". He also wrote "Persuasive Games: The Expressive Power of Videogames", and was co-author of "Racing the Beam: The Atari Video Computer System". He is widely considered an influential thinker and doer in the videogame industry and research community.

Ian Black Oral History Interview
Oral history interview with Ian Black, drum major in the Herd of Thunder Marching Band. Black, a music major, began playing clarinet in sixth grade and was a drum major in his high school’s marching band. Being in Herd of Thunder was one of his goals upon entering USF, and in his sophomore year he auditioned for drum major. A junior when this interview was conducted, it was his second year as drum major. The drum majors are responsible for setting tempos and leading the band in rehearsal and performance, which requires them to know everything about the show and its music. The band plays at all home games and occasionally travels to away games, including bowls; they have three different shows each year, which are performed at halftime. In this interview, Black describes his first year in the band, the process of becoming a drum major, and explains some of the band’s traditions
