A Florentine family in crisis: the Strozzi in the fifteenth century.

    No full text
PhDIn 1434 the Strozzi lineage had held a leading position in Florentine society and government for at least one hundred and fifty years, and was one of the largest and wealthiest of the city's patrician lineages. The records of the catasto of 1427 and of the scrutiny of 1433 are used to give a profile of the dominant social, economic and political position of the Strozzi before the advent of Medicean dominance. Their record of electoral success, and the political and cultural leadership of influential and respected men such as Palla di Nofri and Matteo di Simone, with other factors, put the Strozzi amongst the greatest enemies of the victorious Medicean regime of late 1434. The effects of political opposition and exile on the lineage are examined both directly, through records of office-holding, and indirectly through such indicators as marriage alliances and household wealth. The two most prominent lines of the Strozzi were exiled after 1434. Palla di Nofri's life and preoccupations in his Paduan exile are examined, together with the lives of his sons; none of these Strozzi ever returned to Florence, pursued as they were by the enmity of the Medicean regime. The very different careers of Filippo di Matteo and his brother Lorenzo are also examined: how they succeeded in founding a lucrative bank in Naples, and in returning to Florence to 'rebuild' (rifare) the position of the Strozzi lineage there. The final decades of the century saw the Strozzi in an economically more secure position, due substantially to the efforts of Filippo. Except for a very small number of its members admitted into the regime, most of the lineage is here shown to have remained excluded from significant political office until after the fall of the Medici regime in 1494

    Selected letters of Alessandra Strozzi

    No full text
The letters of Alessandra Strozzi provide a vivid and spirited portrayal of life in fifteenth-century Florence. Among the richest autobiographical materials to survive from the Italian Renaissance, the letters reveal a woman who fought stubbornly to preserve her family's property and position in adverse circumstances, and who was an acute observer of Medicean society. Her letters speak of political and social status, of the concept of honor, and of the harshness of life, including the plague and the loss of children. They are also a guide to Alessandra's inner life over a period of twenty-three years, revealing the pain and sorrow, and, more rarely, the joy and triumph, with which she responded to the events unfolding around her. This edition includes translations, in full or in part, of 35 of the 73 extant letters. The selections carry forward the story of Alessandra's life and illustrate the range of attitudes, concerns, and activities which were characteristic of their author

Star persona and national identity in the age of the empire: The role of Maja Strozzi-Pečić in Petar Konjović’s opus

    No full text
This study explores the collaboration between the soprano Maja Strozzi-Pečić and the composer Petar Konjović. It sheds light on the relations between the star and the musical work, as well as the notions of gender and genre, reinstating the performer to the centre of the historical stage within the epoch and the genre of music not usually associated with stardom. It examines the star as both the product and the producer, and as an embodiment of a national identity, highlighting the star’s agency in the creation of her own persona and the co-authoring of the works that she performed

Information processing and management using citation network and keyword analysis to perform a systematic literature review on green supply chain management

    No full text
The field of Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) has recently gained considerable attention from both academics and practitioners. This has caused an exponential growth in the number of publications related to different aspects of sustainability in the supply chain. This study aims to show information processing and management techniques, to reveal the evolution of a field over time and identify directions for future research. In particular, this paper is intended to provide a systematic literature review using citation network and the analysis of words in titles and author keyword through burst detection algorithm. Crossing the results of the citation network and burst detection algorithm it was possible to monitor the evolution of the sustainability drivers and to identify the necessity of new key performance indicators of sustainability, able to integrate the economic, environmental and social dimensions, internally within the organization, and externally among the supply chain partners. The contribution of this study lies in the adoption of a blind methodology to analyze theory development which have not been yet applied to the field of GSCM but proved to be useful and promising

Filiroe e i suoi poeti: da Tito Strozzi a Ludovico Ariosto

    No full text
The paper shows how the love between Tito Vespasiano Strozzi and Constanza dal Canale – Filliroe – has served as an example to poets and humanists of the time, such as Ercole Strozzi, Tito’s son, the author known as Anonimo Costabili, Matteo Maria Boiardo, Ludovico Lazzarelli, Girolamo Balbi, Marcantonio Aldegati and, last but not least, Ludovico Ariosto. Through the recovery of the figure of Filliroe, through the use of same expressions or sources, the article seeks to show how a brief (but beautifully exposed) love affair can generate an appreciable literary fortune in the context of Humanism and Renaissance

Thoracic EndoVascular Aortic Repair in the University Hospital Centre Zagreb: Ten Years since the first Intervention, problems and Results

Thoracic EndoVascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR) was initially developed for occlusion pro- cedures in treatment of diseases of the descending aorta, but its use was soon expanded to a whole spectrum of pathologies of this aortic segment, including dissection and traumatic ruptures. Surgical treatment of degenerative aneurysms of the descending aorta has a very high mortality and morbidity, so TEVAR leads to significantly improved outcomes for these patients. This is the reason the University Hospital Centre (UHC) Zagreb introduced the use of this procedure in the Department of Cardiovascular Diseases. Despite difficulties, TEVAR was used to treat the most at-risk patients with aneurysms, type B dissection, and traumatic rupture of the descending aorta. Long-term results of the treatment of 24 patients were acceptable, with a mortality of 8.3% and common complications (type I and II endoleaks in 12.5%; infection in 4.1%; proximal dissection propagation in 4.1%) which were re- solved with an additional intervention or surgical procedure. In the future we expect much more rapid development of this method in UHC Zagreb and in Croatia in general once the Croatian Health Insurance Fund has arranged financing for the device

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a severe chronic, progressive disease. It affects the group of patients with congenital heart diseases (CHD); a high-profile example is Eisenmenger’s syndrome, the CHD with the greatest mortality and morbidity. Advanced PAH treatment for adult congenital heart diseases (ACHD) has significantly improved the outcome and clinical course for these patients, and endothelin receptor antagonist, primarily bosentan, are recommended as first-line treatment today. All case studies and registries show that bosentan improved the exercise tolerance, reduced pulmonary vascular resistance, and decreased the mortality of these patients. Other advanced therapy drugs (phosphodiesterase inhibitors and prostaglandins) are added in case of disease progression. Advanced PAH therapy can be administered long-term with good results and few side effects. Apart from Eisenmenger’s syndrome, other patients from the PAH group in ACHD can be treated through advanced therapy. In the treatment of surgical patients with ACHD who have developed or are developing a subsequent PAH, a different double endothelin inhibitor is indicated, macitentan. Therapy through a combination of drugs has not led to any further significant improvements in relation to treatment by a monotherapy of endothelin receptor inhibitors. It is possible that patients with Fontan circulation will be the target group for the treatment with these drugs.

Mothers at Home, Writing Letters: Alessandra Strozzi and Margaret Paston

    No full text
Alessandra Strozzi of Florence and Margaret Paston of Norfolk were near fifteenth-century contemporaries. They were stay-at-home mothers who served as the touchstone for family affairs, a process we can follow in detail because each was the author of about 100 letters, mostly to the absent men of their families. The letters – with Alessandra’s now available, thanks to a recent scholarly translation – open a window into women’s literacy, styles of expression, interest in matters of daily life, such as the plague, the purchase of household goods, and the marital prospects of children whose marital choices worried their mothers
